Some lyrics from a non-filker
As those of you who were at Orycon know, the west side of Portland was under a Boil Water Order during most of the con. Here are some lyrics that drjeff wrote on the subject (originally posted in damnportlanders). To the tune of "Fire on the Mountain" by Marshall Tucker Moved my family from my California home Stashed all my cash and to Oregon I did roam Three long hours on a Southwest Air flight Got to Portland and I'm feelin' allright But now there's poop in the water, feces in my tap Thought Portland was green but it's tasting like crap Sam Adams' Twitter said hold on there son Gotta boil your water before you are done I know you Westsiders are having a fit I double dare you to recall this shit! Now there's poop in the water, feces in my tap Thought Portland was green but it's tasting like crap Tasting like craaaaaaaaaaap. Found my tribe
Just home from Orycon and very clear that I have found my tribe...which is, of course, the Tribe of Filk. You know how I know? I have a filk of a filk going in me brain....It's a sad ditty about a planet where dance is most important, and the weeping and wailing that occurs when they discover a heretofore undiscovered species. That's right: Little Fuzzy Animals With Two Left Feet. I must go back to my mundane life now. But I'll be Bach. Current Mood: mischievous | | Friday, November 27th, 2009 | 11:47 pm [hsifyppah]

Conflikt - cheap seats reg deadline!
Okay well not that you get better seats if you register later, they'll just cost more. Conflikt! January 29-31, 2010 in Seattle! Tom Smith, Andrew Ross, October Country! Mixed in a blender with cranberry sauce! Wait, I just dreamed that part. It's midnight and I'm in a bardic circle and I'm a little punchy. ANYWAY! If you haven't got your Conflikt membership yet, you have until November 30 to grab one before the price jumps up! If you can't REMEMBER if you got your Conflikt membership yet, or if you're just snoopy, you can check the list of registered members here. That list will also tell you if you remembered to buy a brunch ticket yet! Which you totally should! It's tasty. Also it comes with a sweet CD with tracks from our guests. I mean sweet in a metaphorical way, it's not in pastry format. Also, did you book your hotel room yet? All the cool kids who don't sleep in pup tents in the parking lot are doing it. Van der Filk (UK filkcon) programme deadline in ONE WEEK!
The deadline for programme requests for Van der Filk, the UK filk convention next February, is ONLY A WEEK AWAY. Note that in order to request a slot you (or at least half of your group, if it's a group or band) must be members of the convention by that deadline, as well as having sent us your request. Since it is ONLY A WEEK AWAY, please send requests (for programme slots and, if necessary, membership) to the convention email address vanderfilk@contabile.org.uk rather than posting it by snail mail (we are running into the holiday season and mail will be getting slow). The information needed can be found on the website ( http://www.contabile.org.uk/pr.html) in the "Hotel Booking" PDF file. We can work out ways to pay for membership but we have to know about it. Reminder: the deadline for programme requests is 1st DECEMBER 2009. That is only ONE WEEK away. (And while you're at the website how about sending us your hotel booking details as well? The deadline for hotel booking is 31st December, but especially if you have special needs please contact us earlier. You can use the same email address above.) | | Monday, November 23rd, 2009 | 1:29 pm [sodyera]

Philcon filk
At the "Let's Write a Filk" panel, I was the only person with a word processor at hand (pen and paper), and so I became Recording Secretary for a song that eventually became "The Wet Side of the Moon", about finding water up there. The song that resulted, composed by Roberta Rogow, the Denebian Slime Devils, many other panel attendees and myself, was published in the next day's Philcon Rocket(!) The Wet Side of the Moon (to the tune of "The Water is Wide"--trad.) The Eagle landed, we set down, But dust and tocks were all we found; We took a look and went away. No reason then for us to stay. We went again, we went in style. We hit a golf ball half a mile; We grabbed more rocks and took them home, No reason then, to further roam. Now forty years have come and gone, But still the memory lingers on; If there was water in that place, We'd use the Moon as Alpha Base. To find Moon water was our goal; Prospecting at the southern pole, We launched a probe up Luna's rear, And said, "Good Lord, there's water here!" A brand-new future's coming soon, We know this ain't our grandpa's Moon; Ice cubes to fill up throats and bars! Today the Moon--Tomorrow Mars! Written at the Philcon '09 Parody Workshop in commemoration of the discovery of water on the Moon by "The Denebian Slime Devils"; Ariel Cinii, Robrta Rogow, Amy Fass, Mark Mandel, Maughorn, et al. | | Sunday, November 22nd, 2009 | 6:14 pm [shadowriderhope]

Hello, my name is Deborah
And, uh....I seem to have started writing filk. Help! OK, not really "help" per se. My honey and I were kidnappe^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H introduced to filk at Conflikt last January by pocketnaomi and I've already written (and rewritten) (and rewritten) three filks that were debuted at cflute and pocketnaomi 's housefilk a couple weeks ago. They even got some applause! (and then some more rewriting). What I asked about at the housefilk was "what do I do with those songs where I get the first 2 (or 4) lines and then...nada! it stops. No more shows up?" They company suggested posting here and asking for help and suggestions. So...here I am. The one that has me currently cranky is the start of a Vorkosiverse song, based on the book Cetaganda, and to the tune of "How are Things in Glockamorra?". I have one verse. It needs more! Help? How are things on Cetaganda? Is the dowager still dead? Has Ivan pleasured all those ghem-girls? Has Vorreedi lost his head? How are things on Cetaganda? ..... the floor is open for comment :-) Current Mood: creative | 9:49 pm [team_banzai]

NJ House Filk, Dec 13th Reminder
Hello again all! Just a reminder that you are invited to gather on Sunday, December 13th from noon to 8pm in South Amboy. To add a sight detail, the Trebuchet in the back yard can be seen by those parking in the driveway(we can fit 6 cars) and is just a lawn ornament outside the SCA >:) Please note the date of December 13th Directions are included below by road and Rail We down a bit on the jersey coast would like to invite you to join us Sunday December 13th from noon to 8pm to sing and make merry! I have invited George Carmichael AKA Lord Andrew Stewart McRobb of the SCA and he has agreed, health permitting. For those of you who are not familiar with Andrew, he has been active musically writing lyrics and some music for parodies and some serious subjects of an SCA or Medieval nature for the last two plus decades. Our home can fit more than we can seat which I have seen as a trend in house filks >:) We have seating for 20(which will be crowded). We will be providing snacks, including Kosher(new bought packets served on new bought paper/plastic ware or in wrapper and purpose bought plastic utensils) for the observant. I do realize this will be during the Chanukah celebration however it was the best timing we could get. RSVP Please. Our home is in South Amboy, NJ one block from the South Amboy NJ transit rail station. We can also be reached via the Garden State Parkway(Exit 125), The New Jersey Turnpike(Exit 11), Route 1, Route 9 and Route 287. Driving to us from Staten Island is best coming across the Outerbridge crossing. DIRECTIONS: Arrival by NJ Transit Rail: If you take the train from the North(From NYC or Newark NJ) you can take trains from Penn Station(NYC or Newark) on the "North Jersey Coast" line to station South Amboy. If you are coming from Trenton(or services connecting there) you will need to come north to the Rahway station and then switch trains. Once you arrive in South Amboy, look to see if you are on the station side or not. If you are on the Station side, you need to cross sides. There are foot-bridges north(more modern) and South(older) of the station itself. Once on the correct side, turn your back to the rails and walk(via an alley or nearby road) to Broadway, South Amboy's main road. Once on Broadway, cross the far side of Broadway and look left and right for a green and white sign for "Amboy National Bank". This sign marks the corner of David Street and Broadway. Go to that intersection and follow David Street(there is only one way) to house number 263 on your left. Thats us. Arrival by Road: North: NJ Turnpike: Take the best route to the Turnpike south. Go to exit 11 and pay the toll. Follow the signs to Route 9 South. This will put you on NJ Route 9 south over the Raritain river. Follow from *** below Garden State Parkway Take the best route to the Parkway south. Go to exit 129 and follow the signs to Route 9 South. This will put you on NJ Route 9 south over the Raritain river. Follow from *** below Outerbridge Crossing: Once you cross the OBC you are on Route 440. Follow that until you see signs for Route 9 South. Once you are on Route 9 South, Follow from *** below. South: NJ Turnpike: Take the best route to the Turnpike North. Go to exit 10 and pay the toll. Follow signs to Route 440 towards Perth Amboy. Once on 440, follow signs to Route 9 South. This will put you on NJ Route 9 south over the Raritain river. Follow from *** below Garden State Parkway Take the Parkway north. Just past exit 120 there is a rest area(Cheesequake Rest area), take the exit into that rest area. Go to the northern parking area and pass to the north end where there is an exit onto a local road. This is Bordentown Road. Turn right onto Bordentown and pass under the Parkway and then, after some distance, under Route 35. Once under Rt 35 you will see a foodtown and then pass through one full traffic light before coming to a blinking light. The blinking light is the intersection of Bordentown and Stevens. Turn left here onto Stevens. Once on Stevens, pass the intersections for George, John and Henry to Stevens and David. Turn right there and go to the third house from the corner on the right, number 263. Thats us. *** Once over the river, be prepared to take the very first exit off the foot of the bridge. When you come to the light at the end of the ramp you want to be in the right most of the two left lanes. Turn left at the light and stay to the left until under Route 9, then move to the right at the light you are approaching. At the light, turn right onto Main Street(yes, it looks pretty desolate). You will pass through one more light almost immediately and then some distance before three more lights. The third light is Main Street and Stevens Avenue. Turn left here. Follow Stevens through one traffic light to the very next intersection. This is Stevens and David. WARNING: There is no street sign for David where it hits Stevens. Just remember that is the next intersection after the light you pass through. Turn left at this intersection. We are the third house on the right, number 263. RSVP Please Andrew has given permission in advance for recording his performances but hopes everyone who wishes to will join in Marc and Gemma | | Sunday, November 15th, 2009 | 6:04 pm [kilted_singer]

Filk-writing workshop
Hello, fellow filkers! In Meorot, an upcoming Israeli science fiction convention, I'm going to run a filkwriting workshop - to the best of my knowledge, the first of its kind in Israeli conventions. Since I have no experience to rely on, I wanted to ask this community's help. Has anybody reading this run a filk workshop? If you could share from your experience I'd really appreciate it, especially if you can point me at existing resources. Specifically, this workshop will center on writing songs to existing tunes, and doing so in Hebrew, but if anyone can point me at songwriting resources of any kind that'd be cool. | 4:48 pm [pbristow]

Important reminder/clarification: Van der Filk programme slots
December is the month of ex-felines, it seems. We have a... what's the collective noun for dead lions? Not a pride, clearly... ah! We have an *embarrassment* of dead lions coming up in the month of December: The cut-off for booking programme slots is December 1st. Contrary to the rumours going around, the Van der Filk programme is NOT FULL! A lot of people have expressed an *interest* in having a slot, but surprisingly few of those have actually booked one yet. Given the number of people expressing interest, I have no doubt we *will* have a nice full program, but people should by no means be put off making their requests... PROVIDED you have joined the convention first! (For groups, at least half of you must have joined for your slot request to be accepted.) ( Read more... ) | 11:47 am [coat_of_brown]

Making a Future Filker
Well, we went ahead and got my daughter a guitar for Christmas. We took all your great advice and walked into the local guitar store with her- without telling her anything! You should have seen her eyes light up when her dad answered the "can I help you" from the store owner with "Our oldest is interested in getting a guitar and we're pretty much lost." He sat her down and brought out a guitar that his daughter- who is only 2 years older- uses and had her "fit" it and get a feel for it. She was enthralled! He was very nice and informative. And we just happened to walk in on the day when he was having a 15% off sale! So we thanked him and left for other stores to try and get a chance to talk about it without Thing One hearing. We got a moment away and all I said was "Do it." I took the girls to another store and The Fictitious Husband made some story about getting something from the van. He went back to the store and got the guitar, a soft shell case, some picks, and an electronic tuner- all for less what it would have cost to get her a DS Game (that she also asked for). So this Christmas should be quite amazing- especially since we're going to get Thing Two a keyboard. My only question now...- how do I gift wrap a guitar? :-) | | Saturday, November 14th, 2009 | 10:01 pm [filkferengi]

Wild Mountain Swine Wild Mountain Swine ttto "Wild Mountain Thyme", Jimmy McPeake (http://mudcat.org/@displaysong.cfm?SongID=7886)
O the summer time is coming And the bees are sweetly blooming And the wild mountain swine Grow among the purple heather. Will you go, lassie, go? And we'll all go together, To hunt wild mountain swine, All around the mutant heather. Will you go, lassie, go?
I will build my love a tower, By yon queer crystal fountain, And round about will fly All the otters of the mountain. Will you go, jasons, go? And we'll all go together, To hunt wild mountain swine, All around the glowing heather. Will you go, lassie, go?
If my true love will not go, I will surely find another, To hunt wild mountain swine, All around the scarlet heather. Will you go, jasons, go? And we'll all go together, To hunt wild mountain swine, All around the changing heather. Will you go, lassie, go?
As you may have already realized, this song will be collected on the planet Mirabile, so well described by Janet Kagan.

Filk in the Bookstore
so I'm out Christmas shopping yesterday and, my family being the bookofiles they are, I spent lots of time in the book store in various sections. At one point, I found Tanya Huff's book- and it definitely had a bimbo on the cover of her book! Then I rounded the corner of the shelf and saw Seanan McGuire's "Rosemary and Rue" looking right at me (seriously- front over facing out, on the eye level shelf- great placement!). THEN when I turned I saw the Tolkien section. A certain book therein caught my eye.... Come on, sing it with me.... "I fell asleep reading the Silmarillion..." so all in all, a very filky shopping trip for me :-) |
