    New lyrics database
At the urging of multiple people who hinted in the nicest terms possible that making my songs easier to find would be A Good Idea, I am proud to announce the launch of NanSongs, the new home for [nearly] all my lyrics.

Like all new homes, there's not much furniture yet, so pull up a pillow, grab a slice of pizza and make yourself comfortable!

I am pleased to announce that my album (Brooke vs. John: STEEL CAGE MATCH) is available for order on CDBaby!

Okay, actually it's been available for like a week, but in my post-Concertino haze I forgot to post here. Oops.

There are 15 tracks: tracklist behind the cut )

Featuring me and John Caspell, obviously, plus [info]vixyish singing harmony, [info]reluctance on accordion, [info]motherinlawtree on bass, and the Brainpan Pirate Chorus. Runtime is 41:57. A VERY ENERGETIC 41:57.

Anyway, I sure hope y'all like it. :)

Leslie Fish - Lock and Load - releasing @ Westercon 2009
Reposting here (from rec.music.filk) with permission of Mary Creasey -

_Lock & Load_, Leslie Fish's 2nd Amendment/politics album already over
a decade in the making, has finally, today, hit our living room. It
will be debuted at WesterCon (FiestaCon, Tempe, AZ) this next weekend.
Orders will not be taken (mail, dealers, et al) until the 8th (after
we get back from the con road trip). Dealer orders will be at the
    usual wholesale.

Price is the usual $16, plus CA sales tax as applicable.

New: For the first time, we're using a cardboard wallet instead of
jewel cases (less breakage). Also for the first time, there is a
poster enclosed with ALL the lyrics to all the songs (as sung).

Thanks to all the performers and writers--and HUGE thanks go to all
you patient folks who have been waiting years for this. We hope you
find it a worthy 13th addition to the Random Factors titles.

This IS an official announcement from Random Factors.

    Sincerely,

    Mary Creasey

    2009 Pegasus Nominations are Open
    Hello everyone!

Those of you at Marcon may have seen the paper copies of these, but due to the Pegasus Committee having an attack of Real Life (TM), we only just got the electronic versions ready. In any case, without further ado, I am pleased to announce that nominations for the 2009 Pegasus Awards are now open! You can see the results of the brainstorming poll here and the ballot is here.

The floating categories for this year are "A Little Bit Country" and "A Little Bit Rock and Roll." As ever, I look forward to seeing what your nominations are.

Nominations close when it is August in California, i.e., 12:01 a.m. August 1st, Pacific Time. You can't nominate early and often, but you can certainly have fun deciding who to put on your nominating ballot!

    All the best,

    Erica Neely

    Pegasus web site updated
Here's a quick "Thanks!" to [info]tarkrai, who tells me "I have massive updates to make to the Brainstorming pages, but the initial site is done!", for putting the 2009 Pegasus Nominating Ballot and the results of the 2009 Pegasus Awards Brainstorming Poll on line. And a heartfelt "Thank you!" to those who listed my name in three different categories of the Brainstorming Poll (Best Writer/Composer, Best Performer, and Best Classic Filk Song for "Good Morning, Mr. Johnson").

    Poll: Children at Filk Concerts

    ---

    After one week, 30 responses:

18 people (60%) said, "My children do not exist, and I am mainly answering this poll to be a smart-aleck."
4 people (13%) said, "I put my children to bed (and they can remain in the hotel room alone) before attending evening concerts."
3 people (10%) said, "My child is too young to be in the hotel room alone, so one of us has to stay with him in the hotel room while the other gets to go to concerts."
2 people (7%) said, "My children do not attend filk conventions."
1 person (3%) said, "My children sit quietly while watching evening concerts with me."
1 person (3%) said, "My children attend evening concerts with me, but they have trouble sitting quietly."
1 person (3%) said, "My child is too young to be in Children's Programming alone, so one of us has to stay with him in Children's Programming while the other gets to go to concerts."
Nobody said, "My children spend time (independently) in Children's Programming during evening concerts."
Nobody said, "My children roam the halls of the hotel in packs during evening concerts."
Nobody said, "Neither I nor my children attend evening concerts at filk conventions."

    A thought on Interfilk auctions
I hardly ever bid in Interfilk voice auctions any more, though I'll generally spend some money in the silent auction. The reason for this is simply the aggressive wenching. I know that those who are uncomfortable with it can wave the wenches off, but it's still an embarrassing situation, and doing that spoils the schtick.

On the whole, the wenching seems to increase the bidding, but I'm sure I'm not the only person it discourages. I don't know if there's a solution that would make everyone happy. Perhaps some equivalent of the hug / no hug stickers which are distributed at FKO?

SJ Tucker house Concert - Chicago Area

    Who: S.J. “Sooj” Tucker
    What:
    A Concert!!!
    When:
    Sunday July 5th
    More When:
The concert will start at 2pm, I would show up early to get seats and snacks.
    Where:
Evan and My house . . . Follow the link for more specifics and location and facilities http://alyse.org/home/
    RSVP:
YES please!!!! Bring your friends, as well, just RSVP for both you and them. . . (that way I can try to have enough chairs setup and also food enough for everyone)
    Why:
Have you heard her??? If you have, you aren’t asking this question. If you haven’t, come and find out how excellent she is.

Are you a Chicago area folkey? If so then you may have seen S.J. at one of her performaces in the area. Are you a local filker? You might have seen S.J. at Duckon this year playing with Vixy and Tony or Seanan. Do you frequent Renaissance Faires and other outdoor festivals? You might have seen her on her own or with Tricky Pixie. Even if you aren’t any of the above, I can promise that S.J. puts on an dynamic and energetic show that will have you singing along, laughing, and dancing (even if it is just in your seat).

You don’t have to just take my word though:

“Tucker has a voice in a million — powerful, hypnotic, untamed and yet utterly controlled. She sings from the gut, but hers is a trained instrument.”
    — Green Man Review

“With such a huge, soulful voice, one would be surprised to see that Skinny White Chick is in fact a skinny white chick.”
    — In the Studio

“She’s got Dar [Williams]’s sardonic sincerity coupled with [Ani] DiFranco’s passion, Janis Ian’s vocal chops, and the deft guitar hands of Emily Saliers. Her lyrics swell up from the underworld where so many artists venture but few truly understand.”
    — Phil Brucato, NewWitch magazine

If you won’t take my word, or their word, you can read more about her or listen to her at one of her many locations on the web:

When the concert is over, we will convert the living room into a song circle. Please bring yourself, your instruments, your voice, and your willingness to participate! If you are bringing instruments for the song circle PLEASE try to come early for the ease of instrument storage.

As usual Evan and I will provide snacks and soda and water, but potluck items are always welcome. Please RSVP by responding to this or by emailing to music @ alyse.org – you can also use that email address to send any questions you might have. You can also go to the website to learn more about Music Events at our house: http://alyse.org/home/music-faq/

    One More Time

This is a response to "Had Enough" by Will Frank, done for the Concertino Song Contest.  No prize, but it was sure fun to write (*evil grin* /*cackle*):

    "One More Time"
ttto "Still Alive" by Jonathan Coulton
Altered Lyrics by Robert Rosenfeld 2009

I know that you've had it
With hearing this tune sung way too much.
I know that I promised not to filk it.
    But God, what an earworm!
And words keep on filling in the blanks.
I know what I promised, but I'm taking it back!
Now I'm writing lyrics down at three in the morn,
And before too long a brand new song will be born.
Oh I'm frothing at the mouth
And my brain is going South
    As I'm filking this song
    One more time.
