A Rude Awakening
Date: Saturday April 19, 2002
Time: just after 8:00 AM
Location: the Moore's house
Characters Involved: Stella and Caleb Moore
Rating: PG-13? for angst?
Stella did not notice anything different when she woke up on Saturday morning. On the contrary, she awoke to what was quickly becoming comfortingly normal- being curled up in Caleb's arms, feeling his slow breath on the back of her neck. They had been married for just over a month now, and Stella could sometimes still scarcely believe that she would get to wake up to this every morning for the rest of her life.
Quietly slipping out of bed (so as not to wake Caleb) Stella went to use the loo, stopping on her way back to bed to grab her wand out of the pocket of her dressing gown. She was not quite as sleepy as Caleb, but didn't want to leave him alone in bed. Almost mindlessly, Stella waved her wand to summon up her book from the den downstairs.
The problem was, nothing happened.
The book did not immediately come flying up the stairs, but more troubling to Stella was the fact that she had felt nothing. Not even a twitch of the usual surge of magic that she could feel flowing through her body when she did even the simplest spell. This was- well, something Stella could never recall feeling in her life.
Trying to stay calm for a moment, Stella sat down weakly on the bed, her mind racing. What in Merlin's name was going on? They certainly hadn't done anything strange in the past few days- they'd arrived home from their honeymoon on Thursday, stopping in London to check in at the Ministry and have lunch at Finnigan's before heading back to Devon to relax for a few days before they both had to go back to work. Yesterday had been spent unpacking and doing some cleaning around the house. Still extremely confused, Stella tried again, this time focusing all of her will on the spell she wanted, and speaking it out loud.
"Lumos!"
Nothing.
"Caleb!" Stella cried, now anxious as she turned over and started shaking her husband. "Wake up, love. There is- I don't know, but something is wrong." She said, shaking her head. "Can you try my wand? Anything- summon over your dressing gown or something."
