About
Welcome to [info]fieldofplay, dedicated to football-based real person fiction. This community is open to gen, slash and het in all manner of persuasion. If any of these bothers you, we suggest you find another community you'll be more comfortable in.

Your moderators are [info]lemongrasstea and [info]thepianopoet. We can be reached at fieldofplaymods (at) gmail.com.

RULES & EXPECTATIONS
  1. The emphasis of this community is on fan fiction, fanart and information-sharing. Match analysis and pictures accompanied by write-ups are allowed, but not picspams, icons, and fan soundtracks. See the section on "Content Guidelines" below for more information.

  2. Membership is moderated to weed out obvious sockpuppets and troublemakers, but you're good to go after your membership is approved. One of the moderators will contact you via e-mail within 24 hours if they have any concerns (e.g. if you're obviously, painfully underaged). If your membership hasn't been approved or rejected after 48 hours, please contact us.

  3. Please observe basic courtesy. We're not expecting you to eat with the right salad fork, guys, just to recognise that the person on the other side of the computer screen is a human being.

    • Trolling will earn you an immediate ban (and, if we can be bothered, maybe some mocking).

    • If you suspect that someone is deliberately stirring up trouble, DO NOT POKE THE TROLL. Contact the moderators.

    • The moderators have a very low tolerance for drama, so please confine the soap operas to your fiction. God knows football gives us enough of it, on and off the pitch.

  4. Because we can't emphasise this enough: [info]fieldofplay accepts gen, slash and het. Yes, all of them.

  5. At some point, you will run into something that makes you want to gouge your eyes out. It may be a Mary Sue wish-fulfillment fic. It may be a necro-watersports-wingfic. We've all been there before. However, this community operates under the dictum: Your Kink Is Okay, My Kink Is Okay. The moderators do not give a damn if you bitch in your own LJ or over IM, but don't bring it to the community.

  6. That said, please include appropriate warnings in the headers of your post. You do not need to warn about slash or het content unless it is not obvious from the pairing names. Nor do you need warnings for deathfics, because the moderators insist on treating everyone as adults. You do, however, need to warn readers about violence, explicit sexual content, and Mary Sue/self-insert fics.

  7. Failure to read the rules and guidelines is no excuse.

CONTENT GUIDELINES

Yes, Oh Yes: What's Definitely Okay to Post
Fiction and Art

This one's easy: refer to the rules and expectations list for what's allowed. Which is pretty much anything, as long as you include appropriate warnings and use an lj-cut tag.

Sample headers for reference:
Title:
Author:
Rating:
Pairing/Character:
Warnings:
Disclaimer:
Summary:

You don't need to use the above format -- we just like to make things easy for those who need it. Please include a note about the language if your story is in any language other than English. Just so we know which field to select in Babelfish. :D

Information

You know how it is: you want to know if Player X likes go-karting in his spare time, but Wikipedia and Google aren't helping. And you'll probably never know if you didn't happen to be on the flist of someone who scanned in an interview where Player X says that he takes part in cat shows and breeds mutant cacti.

We encourage people to share articles, anecdotes, etc. that reveal facets of a player's personality and background, and his relationships with other players. Bring on the writings and clips of documentaries on the history behind clubs and leagues. Also appreciated are commentaries and even book recommendations on the political and sociocultural context of football, from rivalries and derby matches to the economics of the transfer market.

In the interest of full disclosure, the mods admit that one of us is an anal-retentive research whore. In mitigation, she points out that she can't possibly be the only one.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please friends-lock all downloads and torrent links of audiovisual material. It would be really, really stupid if a community for ethically-dubious fiction based on real, living people is suspended for copyright violation.

Discretion Needed: Use Your Judgement
Match Analysis

Members may post their own analysis of football matches. However, you may not link to or repost analysis and commentaries written by someone else, be it from a newspaper or a fan forum -- unless it contains enough relevant material as laid down under Information (see previous sub-section).

As far as member-written match analysis goes, we're looking for substance. If your commentary includes any variation on "OMG ugly X scored again wrrrryyyy", please refrain from posting it to the community. And, on that note, we realise that football brings out the passion in many people and it does tend to bypass self-control (ask one of the moderators about her incredibly ill-advised adventures in 2002 sometime). However, even if the commentator happens to be writing about a match in which s/he is a fan of a team that is your sworn blood enemy, please remember the rules on courtesy.

Incidentally, criticising a player's performance does not constitute an insult against your person or the player in question. In short: "I think Player X was coasting through the match and played terribly" != "My god, what a horrible dickhead Player X is! He kicks puppies and you're awful for liking him!" Same goes for comments on less-than-appealing behaviour. Be sensible.

Please use the lj-cut tag generously.

Pictures with Write-Ups

The posting of pictures to this community is only allowed when accompanied by a write-up. Again: substance is the key. Something like the pimp my player posts at [info]manndecker is fine. A post that consists of nothing but pictures and maybe a few words, however, is not.

Do Not Want: What's NOT Okay
Picspam

We love the pretty pictures as much as everyone else, but there are already other communities for posting or linking to picture posts (picspams). We're trying to keep traffic and cross-posts at a manageable level.

Icons and Banners

See above. Graphics (including photomanipulations) that accompany a story, however, are fine.

Fan Soundtracks and Fan Mixes

Again, there are other communities for these, such as [info]fst and [info]fanmix. Music that's part of a story with multimedia content is fine. Providing downloads for a song that inspired a fic is fine. However, please post your FSTs and fanmixes elsewhere.

Community Pimping/Announcements

Football-based communities are springing up almost as fast as one can say, "hey, wouldn't it be cool if..." We think it's fantastic, but we'd like to reduce the number of cross-posts on everyone's flists. If you have a new football community you'd like to announce to fandom at large, please leave a comment at the relevant fandom resource post (fanworks, clubs and national teams, or players) with the community name and a brief description. At the end of the week, the mods will compile everything into one entry and post it to [info]fieldofplay.

An exception to this rule is any LJ community-based fanwork project along the lines of [info]shoebox_project. That would count under Fiction and Art.

Personal Introductions

We are not an insular, inbred village tucked away between a gloomy mountain and a haunted forest. Strangers will not be shot on sight. There really is no need to introduce yourself. We promise.

We hope you'll enjoy your stay. If you have any questions, please comment here.
