Naruto - First Frost

Second try, this time with a series someone else reads. Go Naruto! Appologies if anyone has seen this one before; I think it might be well-known but I'm not sure.

Title: First Frost
Author:: Moonsheen. No relation.
Author's Summary: In which it snows in Konoha and Naruto incites a revolt. Pay no attention to the brooding ninja in the background.
Summary: Light-hearted antics in a snowed-in Konoha. One-shot futurefic.

?Que? My favorite Naruto fanfiction ever. It has a little something for everyone - fluff, all the major characters, het and implied shonen-ai, believable canon speculation, atmosphere, and great dialogue. The humor is fantastic stuff, really genuinely funny. The only thing it doesn't have is a plot, but really, how much can you expect in a one-shot?

More to the point, the writing is excellent. Moonsheen is one the few wants-to-be-professional fanfiction writers that I really think can make it. Her writing is descriptive but not overdone, and she has a quirky draws-you-in style that is still very readable. Fun to read.

New Member Says Hi

Hello everyone! I'm new and I followed telophase here, although she may or may not remember as that was a very long time ago. In any case, I've recently been reminded of just how much I like to recommend things. So for this, my first entry, I thought I'd go a little ways out on a limb to pimp what is still one of my all-time favorites:

Fic - A Midsummer's Nightmare, Or Juuohcho no Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the Search for Spock-kun
Author - Experimental, best known for her epic (and unfinished) Sailor Moon fanfic Rubies in Zoicite. I haven't read that one. No relation.
Series - Yami no Matsuei/ Descendants of Darkness
What? A fiction with atmosphere and understated humor. To be honest, a bit confusing and without proper plotting. Non-sequiturs abound, but this story could best be described as: An unknown threat to the department. A mysterious death that shouldn't have been possible. A lunar eclipse and no one's acting quite right. Is there some sinister underlying force? Or is enka to blame?

I love this one for the style. Beautifully written, so that it gives the impression of coherency when for all I know there may be none. It flows wonderfully well. Each chapter varies slightly from each other chapter, but all of them are engrossing in a "Wait, did I just miss something?" kind of way. My only real regret is the lack of an ending.

Right, so does anyone else here read Yami no Matsuei fanfic? Scrolling down, I see a lot of Harry Potter and Naruto, which I completely understand as it is really, really hard to find good fics for those series (too much crap). For myself, I'm a big Naruto, YnM, Ranma 1/2, FMA, Shaman King, Detective Conan, and Card Captor Sakura reader, although I'll read anything as long as it's well enough done.

Now that A-Kon's over and I have my life back again, hopefully I can resume posting things here. :) For my frist post-A-Kon post, I have a short fic that isn't a crossover or a parody. Amazing, hn?

How I Vanquished the Werewolf of Wagga Wagga (A ballad by Gilderoy Lockhart), by Suburban House Elf

Fandom: Harry Potter, as if you couldn't tell.

An amusing ballad from the viewpoint of everyone's favorite popinjay, Gilderoy Lockhart. The title says exactly what it is: the tale of how he vanquished a fearsome beast. Suburban House Elf (SHE) stays in character throughout and it's obvious that SHE knows quite a bit about ballads and ballad-writing.
*is new* *is frightened* *trembles* o.o

lol, not really. I'm just a new member looking for good fics to <s>pass the lonely time</s> <s>keep my lazy ass occupied</s> enjoy. I'm really into LotR but seeing as how it's very hard to find a good LotR fic, my fandom doesn't allow for a lot of good reading. I also love Harry Potter and a few animes but my interests are limited. I'm afraid I won't be spending much time here. Though, this kind of community is a great idea and I'll be popping by occasionally to check things out. Long live fic_sans_pareil!

Still, I do have a fic that I'd like to share with you all. It truly is (or I believe so, anyway) a diamond in the rough.

Author -- Madelyn Scott
Title -- Cabbages and Kings (link opens a new window to ff.net)
Fandom -- Lord of the Rings
Summary -- (Author's summary:) Pippin's always told Merry all his secrets - except one. (My summary:) Down-time in the Great Smials for Merry and Pippin. Much cuteness and fluff ensues.
What makes this story stand out -- As telophase and myself stated before, it's very hard to find a good LotR fic because there are very few who can catch the essense of Tolkienesque writing. Of all the LotR fics I've read, I sincerely believe that none other has sounded more beautifully and rhythmically Tolkienesque than this one. If it weren't for the fact that it is a slash fic, I may possibly even look at an excerpt from it and believe it was from the Silmarillion! There is still a noticeable difference between Tolkien's writing and this author's, but there are some moments in her fic where you truly believe that you are reading a genuine tale of Middle-Earth.
Anything else -- Yes, it is slash and the pairing is Merry/Pippin. I am really not one for odd pairings so I tend to stick with the very mild ones. Anything beyond the oddness of this pairing makes me squeamish. The fact that it is slash may make it less believable, especially being Tolkienesque as it is, though I think the author's superior writing skills make up for it almost completely along with sticking completely to canon. As I said before, it is a diamond in the rough.
Full disclosure -- I am not the author of this fic nor do I personally know the author. I just think she had an amazing talent that should be shared.
(and just for good measure...)
Rating -- R, for an extremely mild sex scene, non-graphic, no nudity, much fluff... though it's not really even a sex scene so I don't know how you'd describe it. O.o Fluffy snoggage? Oh well, very cute nonetheless. If it weren't for this particular bitty scene, it would be a firm G rating. Very mild and cute.

Thanks for allowing me to share. I hope you all enjoy and comment below after you read it to let me know what you think. :)

Intro post and a fanartist

Hi, I'm new. I currently don't have any stories to rec - my computer has managed to lose all my links and I'm still trying to get them back - but I do have a fanartist who I'd like to recommend.

pu-sama draws darker stuff, and most of her recent pictures have all been of Hellsing, mainly the manga. Farther back, she has some Getbackers and Violinist of Hameln art.

I really like her style, which is, as I said, often dark. She does both hair and clothing very well, at least in her more recent stuff, and overall, her drawings are very nice.

And a little intro about me - I'm a big fan of anime, though I read some fanfiction for a few books, too, and original fiction. I don't really like most romance fics - I'm a much bigger fan of action, mystery, or friendship/family fics. If I do read romance, I prefer weird pairings, since I have to work more to see them, and it's more entertaining. I don't mind yuri, yaoi, or het, though I tend to skip over any graphic sex scenes because they're usually boring. ^_^; I also beta-read a lot, so a few things really bug when I read fanfiction because I want to yank out a red pen and correct them. (POV switch and tons of exposition, mainly).

I also had a question - when recommending something, should we try to avoid the big names that "everyone" knows? Though I admit, I often have no clue who's who in fandom. ^_^;

Now if John could only find a place to smoke in peace!"

Due to a short, violent conflict between an otherworldy antagonist and a half-brick in a sock, John Constantine ends up in the England of Hogwarts instead of his own reality.

This is told partly from Constantine's point of view, in a sort of diary format, and partly in third-person. The first-person journal-type entries and the third-person parts from Constantine's POV have the grubby flavor of Constantine's personality.

Hagrid's war all down to one man, some git calling himself Lord Voldemort. Apparently he's some magic psychopathic racist dictator or something who held power 15+ yrs. ago. Reign of terror, people dying left & right, armies of sinister magic creatures, etc. etc., but got his arse served to him on a silver platter by a baby name of Harry Potter. Been trying to stage comeback ever since. Lord V wants to 'purify wizarding race', can't even stand wizards w/muggle ancestors, would be happier if muggles all died screaming. Sounds like every fascist wanker to come down the pike only w/magic. Tried telling Hagrid this. Did not help.

Control of POV fairly good, there is a bit of unheralded head-hopping in the third person bits in the early chapters - that means the point of view switches from one person to another a bit abruptly without anything signaling the transition - but I'm probably the only person on the planet who would notice that and it's excellent otherwise.

There are many creative touches in this story that add to the characterization of Constantine and the wizarding world. Constantine's solution to earning book money before the school term starts is especially apropos.

Seven chapters up as of this review, with more to come.

A Day in the Life of Severus Snape: An Excerpt from his Diary by Madam Otaku.

Yup, yet another parody fic I like. (What are the odds?) The author of this one says she wrote it to get into Snape's character before writing something else, and she managed to keep him in character and yet be hilarious at the same time. It's exactly what the title says it is, Snape's diary entry from a typical day at Hogwarts. There isn't much point in going on for too long in this review since that would end up making it longer than the fic, so I'll just say: Go read. It funny.

For anyone coming over from DeviantArt, this fic is the source of the quote I use in my sig there.

Well, hi! I'm Poe, and I read fanfic

(Hi, Poe!)

Well, I'm a spelling nazi. You will never meet another like me, I expect. (arrogant too!) Anyway. I like anime fanfic. Naruto is one of my favorites right now, and likely to stay that way. (81 episodes and counting!) Anyway. I've found a few Naruto fics here and there that I like, so I thought I'd recommend one now.

Author - The SOC Puppet
Title - Bloodlines
Fandom - Naruto

(The summary he provides is partially useful, so I'll post it and elaborate)
Knocked unconscious by Orochimaru's attack, Naruto awakes to discover a shocking secret about himself.
Taking place during/after episode 29 and diverging from there, Naruto is struck down by Orochimaru and this act uncovers a secret kept for 12 years.

In-Depth:
I trudged through a LOT of crap in the Naruto section of FF.net, then came across this one about a year or so ago. The writing is solid, for the most part, and he keeps the characterisations steady as well. There are a few original characters, mostly to fill in gaps needed for the story to be fleshed out. One of his characters does come off somewhat like a pre-existing character, but he claims to not have read the manga, so the similarities may in fact, be coincidental. Nonetheless, he gives us a view of Naruto that is different from the anime, as Naruto does come off as more bitter here than we normally see him. But he also lets us see that not everyone hates Naruto and shuns him among the villagers, as there are a few who know the secret revealed in this fic.

I realise this isn't the longest in-depth review, but this is an interesting What-If? fic, as we see the SOC Puppet's take on a few things that are never revealed as of yet in anime or manga. (who Naruto's parents are, for one.). And what Naruto would do if he woke up one day and found out about them.

Full disclosure: Well, I'm not a friend fo the author or anything. Just a fan recommending a good Naruto fic

Well, I said this community would be open for recommending fanart as well as fic, so let me put my money where my mouth is...

Paintpixel, whose works can be found at her DeviantArt page as well as www.paintpixel.com, is a digital artist who's gained a bit of fame around the Net for her color renditions of pages in Inane's translations of the Naruto manga. She does original works as well as fanart, and is good at cel shading though in my opinion she excels at soft shading. Unlike a lot of fan artists out there, she's solid in anatomy and shading, and can emulate the styles of the original but with her own flair, not slavishly imitating them.

Well, I should introduce myself, I guess. As a professional proofreader and part-time editor and writer and all-around lit geek, I just got tired of reading poorly written, poorly thought-out, repetitive fiction. Too much of what I've seen needs a quick consultation with a dictionary, at the very least, and at the very worst, it needs to be totally scrapped and started over. I got tired of slogging through the garbage to find the gems, and found that telophase felt the same way. Hence ... this group.

I enjoy character-driven stories, mostly adventures. SI is okay, provided that the SI character is crafted with an appropriate consideration for limits. If you're going to insert yourself into a fanfic, give yourself some limitations. Let the characters of the series shine as well. I do not like slashfic in any form. Call it an atavistic reaction.

Yes! A story I like that isn't a parody!

Author: JoIsBishMyoga
Title: The Best Defense
Fandom: Harry Potter/Yu Yu Hakusho

Summary: cut-and-pasted from the official description at ff.net The Yu Yu Hakusho team goes undercover at Hogwarts to protect the student body from the fallout of the war with Voldemort. The question is-- how undercover can a group like them stay in a school full of wizards? Hiei/Kurama, Ron/Hermione, other pairings.

Why recommend it?: This is pretty much a natural crossover - the Yu Yu Hakusho characters and the Harry Potter characters are about the same age and both are set in the modern day, so there's no inconvenient time travel to handwave away (I'm thinking of an HP/Rurouni Kenshin one I saw, which really just doesn't work for me). It's set in Hogwarts in an alternate fifth year. JoIsBishMyoga is a decent enough writer to keep a handle on most of the characters, which is hard when you've got something like eight major characters to write, although she's better with the Yu Yu Hakusho group than the HP group -- Harry tends to be more passive than I think he is in canon. The story follows the HP formula, hitting all the established points like owl delivery, Diagon Alley, the Hogwarts Express, and the Sorting Hat. So far it has more elements of mystery than adventure, though I think this is going to change quite soon, lightened with touches of humor that don't go overboard.

She departs from YYH canon a bit in elaborating on their magic system and some reactions of the magical characters to events and seasons, but she doesn't contradict, just adds to it. There's at least one point in the story that very obviously contradicts HP canon rules (regarding House placement), but the author had obviously written that part of the story before reading Order of the Phoenix, where it was established, and she has to do some twisting to fit the two magic systems together, not entirely seamlessly, but well enough.

It's a long story, with 21 chapters so far, and the plot is engaging enough to stand up to the length. JoIsBishMyoga is a frequent updater, adding a chapter every couple of weeks it seems. Here's hoping she keeps that up through the end.

Random digression: the crossover I'm *really* waiting for is a well-done Naruto/HP. I've only run across one and it -- well, let's say I'm not going to be recommending it here anytime soon.

Introduction!

All right, my name is dora, and I'm a bit of an English nerd and grammar nazi. I like good fanfic as much as anyone, and I've actually managed to find a few things that I think count as "good." :)

Generally, I like slash fic, but I've been warming up to het fic a lot recently. Just a warning, though, I am more likely to reccomend a slash piece than not.

Anyway, on with the recommendation!

Author: KazVL
Title: Falling Farther In
Fandom: Harry Potter

Summary: I think the summary on Schnoogle does it justice, so I'll copy and paste. "The story begins in the summer holidays before the sixth year. After her parents are murdered by Voldemort Hogwarts becomes Hermione's home. She joins the staff in the fight against Voldemort and learns more of the man behind the dark sarcasms of the classroom."

Why recommend it?: This is one of the most well-written HP fanfics I have read. The author has a clear grasp of the English language, and I think she does a decent job at preserving the feel from the actual books. The characterizations seem spot-on, given the amount of time that has passed between the canon and the beginning of the story, and the author makes a concerted effort to explain WHY a character has changed and would act differently. Also, it's very Snape-centric, and that's generally worth a few points in my book, particularly if he's well-characterized. Finally, it's titled after a very good October Project song. This doesn't have anything to do with how good the story is, but it earns the author even more brownie points. ;)

Warnings, Etc.: This is a very long fic, and it will only get longer. It's still in progress and the author seems very slow, so you may be in for a long wait for the finish. The main pairing is Snape/Hermione, which, while VERY well set up and entirely plausible in the context of the story, may scare some people away. There is also implied slash, though none of it is particularly graphic. Lots of mention of violence, too. But given how angsty the books themselves have been getting, I imagine the real seventh book would be about the same.

I believe that covers everything. Please tell me if I missed anything. o.o

Because good parody fics tend to be short, and I've got a couple of commissions I need to finish right now, I'm posting recs for parody fics because I can't afford the time for a well-written review of a longer piece right now. Until I decide that what I need more than anything else is something to procrastinate with, of course.

So ... The Revenge of Lord Vodkamort by LizBee. It's from the The Sugar Quill, a site for Harry Potter fanfic that requires its authors to have their fics beta-read and edited before posting, which weeds out many less-experienced writers. It's a good place to start looking for readable HP fanfic.

This piece is, I am given to understand, a pastiche of Australian comic novels by John Birmingham, starring the HP crew. I haven't read the original novels, but it doesn't matter. Takes place after graduation from Hogwarts and the Final Battle, with several of the main characters sharing a house in Hogsmeade, much in the same tradition as college students and recent grads everywhere. There is no plot as such, but plot isn't the point of something like this; it's about exploring a humorous situation.

In this story, Harry and Ron are boozing slackers. the characterization seems on the surface to be a little off, but by drawing parallels with normal college-age kids, I can accept it. In fact, many of my friends who seem to be perfectly normal human beings spent their college years in a haze of intoxication with household decor consisting primarily of beer bottles and mold gardens in pizza-box towers, so for the duration of this story it's not too hard to imagine the guys slacking off for a few years after the Final Battle. Otherwise, the author keeps to humorous versions of canon characterization.

As a short bit of fic refreshingly free of plot, there's not much substance to it. This is a good thing. The gems in this story are the one-liners.

They'd discovered the carnivorous wardrobe the hard way.

[...]

"That wardrobe's a bonus," said the agent. "Lots of people would pay extra for a wardrobe like that in their house."

"Yeah, if they were insane," said Ron. "Just think what Malfoy would do if he had a carnivorous wardrobe of his own."

"I heard that Malfoy Manor had a whole carnivorous wing," said Lavender.

"Huh," said Ron, "it's all right for some. We only get a measly wardrobe."

Quoting any more would just result in pasting the entire story in here, and that's pointless when you can go read it for yourself. It's not a serious investment of time on the reader's part, which is all for the good. LizBee, like MJJ in my previous entry, knows when to stop a story, and if it had gone on longer it would become tedious. If the humor appeals to you - and it may not to some people - it's worth a few minutes of your time.

My current favorite fic is The Sanzou Who Walked By Himself by MJJ.

This nicely short story is, well, I wouldn't call it a parody, but more of a humorous homage to Rudyard Kipling's classic The Cat That Walked By Himself, set in the Saiyuki universe, with the cranky priest Genjou Sanzou in the place of Kipling's Cat.

Because the story is so short, too much analysis would overexpose it and I don't want to deprive you of discovering its charm for yourself, so I'll confine myself to a few remarks. There are two reasons I adore this little piece of fluff, and the first is the characterization. MJJ captures the essential personalities of the four main characters in a few quick strokes, and although the setting is more mythological in tone than the manga and anime, it fits with the high concept of the piece. The second reason is the language. Kipling's Just So Stories are a joy to read aloud because of the rhythm of his language, and MJJ captures the cadence of Kipling's speech nicely:

In those confused days the animals were wild and the humans were wild and the youkai were wild-- as wild as wild could be-- and they walked in the Wet Wild Woods of Tougenkyou by their wild lones.

MJJ knows when to end it, too. Pastiches of this sort tend not to hold up well in longer versions, and she keeps it properly short and precise. I'd recommend this piece even to people who aren't familiar with Saiyuki, although the humor and aptness of the characterizations will be more apparent to those who are.

Hello, my name is telophase and I am a fanfic snob.

I like well-written fiction where the characters stay true to the canon (unless there's a good reason other than "It's my fic and I'll cry if I want to!"), and attention is paid to plot and writing. Characterization is really my one true love, in fanfic and regular ficiton. I can forgive almost anything (except netspeak) if the characters are compelling and interesting.

I am apparently one of the three people out there who like reading fanfic who dislikes the whole pairings phenomenon -- to me, fiction is about the synthesis of character and plot and not who is snogging who. If you can make a pairing work so that the characters are consistent with canon, more power to ya, but that's not what I care about, and not what I judge fiction by.

I also dislike most of those introspective ficlets where an author tries to explore the inner psyche of a character, mostly because the character invariably turns out to have some sort of deep emotional brooding angst, no matter what their canon personality is. As Marvel Comics has yet to learn, angst =! good characterization. Good characters need to have multiple facets to their personalities.

I have yet to find a Lord of the Rings fic I like, but that's because what appeals to me in the original is Tolkien's prose, style, and rhythm. Sorry, nobody I've encountered so far is Tolkien.

This community will probably collapse into nothingness like most LJ communities, but I hope that before it does I'll get a few people to recommend nifty fiction for me to read.

I've recently been <s>desperately trying to find good fic about</s> reading: Harry Potter, Yu Yu Hakusho, Saiyuki, and Naruto, but I'm open to most anything. I've never seen more than two episodes of Buffy or Angel, but don't let that stop you reccomending it; someone else will probably want to read it.

You currently have to request to join the community, but that's so I have some vague idea that you might have read the guidelines on the info page. And now I should put my money where my mouth is and write a rec. :)
