seekret crush
i LOVED this topic! it seems i have many seekret crushes.

14+ yards and 4 ounces
all kinds of wool and blends, including silk, nylon, mohair& alpaca
plied on a silk, wool, mohiar, nylon single.

who is my seekret crush?

if i told, it wouldn't be a seekret anymore...

but

it is you!.
most of my favoite fiber artists are here, in this community.
it is funny how much you can tell about someone by looking at the beautiful things they make.
and it is easy for me, for crushes to evolve that way.

when i made this yarn, i tried to find a color, or a fiber that represented each one.
and when i couldn't do that, i used thought; thinking of my crushes as i spun.

i'm not sure exactly what you mean by spriongy, but the coils?
it is just a plying tequnique.

i'm not 100% sure what judith mackenzie calls it in spinning exotic fibers and novelty yarns, coils, tho is what it is commonly reffered to.

it is plying tequinque you can find here
in this book (but it appears amazon is out. your local quild might have a copy.

it seems to be all the rage these days, these days & i've been adverse to making much of it, since it uses oodles of yarn.

yea, it is a bit *much*
if i do any more substantial amounts, i might consider using some type of binder instead of a single.

and you are TOTALLY one of my crushes, so, very appropriate that this was your topic!

Gor.geous.

You should wear it as a necklace, just wound around and around.

thank you.

carol came over yesterday, for a dye delivery, and saw the pile of them. we had a long discussion about drape. (so! yes! a necklace!!)

i'm thinking that if i ever do more of it, that using a binder instead of a single would be better. (plus, using the mostly silk binder, from a center pull got a bit hairy at times.)

today, i'm going attempt to do it thick and thin style, (like how you do your breathtaking coils; hope you don't mind..) but, i'm going to use that same silk/wool/mohair/nylon single..

I totally just use a thread. Crap, that kind of yarn is enough work without spinning both plies!

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]pippikneesocks
2006-02-10 04:27 pm UTC (link)
true that.

i used that stuff because i have like 800 yards of it, that i spun weeks ago...
plus, all the rayon thread i have is still up yonder...
i think the thin-ness of the thread would be better, since the single is like a heavy sport (not quite dk)
decisions, decisions...
lol.

Plus, if you use thread as a binder, the thin sections between the slubs can be super thin.

Dooo eeet!

hum, i just tried it, and i'm having teh issues. ha.
too slipery. so then i tried it with that single, and i hate the way it looks.
no happy medium!! haha.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]helloyarn
2006-02-10 06:23 pm UTC (link)
It is slippery, but by spinning the thick and thin single VERY thick and thin and VERY highly twisted, I get the skinny sections to really grab the thread in between every coiled bobble, and it holds together very well. I also finish the yarn harshly so nothing comes uncoiled when it's cut.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]pippikneesocks
2006-02-10 06:28 pm UTC (link)
thanks. :)
i'll give it another go when i get over my disapointment with it, lol.
i'm using the woolhouse, and getting a high twist in the slubs is a bit tricky (you might remember ;))

& yea, i finish everything the same way.

(Reply to this)(Parent)

[info]pippikneesocks
2006-02-10 06:30 pm UTC (link)
speaking of finishing, how does the biner react (or not react) to finishing? have you ever had any issues where your wool shrunk to a noticable degree & there by making the thread wonk out?

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]helloyarn
2006-02-10 06:36 pm UTC (link)
I haven't had any bad episodes with binders. I don't think the supercoiled yarns shrink much lengthwise in finishing. They just shrink in diameter.

I use a pretty high ratio for plying these, considering they are usually super bulky yarns.

thanks.

i don't have needles quite that big. i'd want to work it up on somehting HUGE, since it has a pretty stiff hand, and no drape. i'd imagine it would be like knitting with rope. (it is about 150 yards of yarn coiled up 14 yards)

i think it would work best as an accent tho, like woven into crochet, or as bag handles. & i think it would could replace an i-cord on alomst anything, lol...
