Welcome to the brand new No Fauxxx, made live at 8:30pm on November 23rd, 2008! We didn't tell you about it because we really wanted to treat you, and I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am to introduce these new features.

AN ACT TO PROHIBIT CERTAIN FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS FROM SERVING FOOD TO ANY PERSON WHO IS OBESE, BASED ON CRITERIA PRESCRIBED BY THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH; TO DIRECT THE DEPARTMENT TO PREPARE WRITTEN MATERIALS THAT DESCRIBE AND EXPLAIN THE CRITERIA FOR DETERMINING WHETHER A PERSON IS OBESE AND TO PROVIDE THOSE MATERIALS TO THE FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS; TO DIRECT THE DEPARTMENT TO MONITOR THE FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS FOR COMPLIANCE WITH THE PROVISIONS OF THIS ACT; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF
MISSISSIPPI:
SECTION 1.
(1) The provisions of this section shall apply to any food establishment that is required to obtain a permit from the State Department of Health under Section 41-3-15(4)(f), that operates
primarily in an enclosed facility and that has five (5) or more seats for customers.
(2) Any food establishment to which this section applies shall not be allowed to serve food to any person who is obese, based on criteria prescribed by the State Department of Health after consultation with the Mississippi Council on Obesity Prevention and Management established under Section 41-101-1 or its successor. The State Department of Health shall prepare written materials that describe and explain the criteria for determining whether a person is obese, and shall provide those materials to all food establishments to which this section applies. A food establishment shall be entitled to rely on the criteria for obesity in those written materials when determining whether or not it is allowed to serve food to any person.
(3) The State Department of Health shall monitor the food establishments to which this section applies for compliance with the provisions of this section, and may revoke the permit of any food establishment that repeatedly violates the provisions of this section.
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2008.

I'd like to announce the SF Bay Area Flesh Mob!

What is a FLESH MOB?

"Flesh Mob" is a play on the phrase, "flash mob," an event in which a large group of people gathers simultaneously in a public place for a brief period of time, then disperses. The gathering appears random and unplanned. It often includes some bizarre activity.

FLESH MOB, then, is a flash mob made up of fat people.

Fat bodies make an impact, in many senses of the word. Fat people turn heads. We inspire awe and curiousity and fear. Imagine what we'd look like in vast numbers!

FLESH MOB gives us an opportunity to do something fun, creative, spontaneous, and powerful. Let's experience the power of fat visibility! Let's give ourselves something to laugh about! Let's see what kind of impact we have in numbers!

For a looong time, I spent way too much money on clothes and accessories. I wouldn’t say it was an addiction, but at the time, it satisfied a need to fill some perceived empty spaces in my life. Now that I’m in a better emotional place, I find that I have an absurdly excessive amount of clothing that I don’t really NEED.

I’m progressively selling off a lot of this acquired stash through eBay. This week I have a few knee length skirts, new-with-tags embroidered jeans from Lane Bryant, virtually new Doc Marten maryjanes, a flippy little black asymmetrical mini skirt, a DKNY black linen shirt, and a few other items. All are in a size 3X to 5X range. Over the next several weeks (probably over the next few months at this rate), I’ll be posting a great many more items of this type.

Helloooo to everyone who joined us at NYC's Fat Girl Flea Market last weekend!

It seems that everywhere we look, there are gorgeous fatties proudly displaying the clothes they scored at this year's Flea. What a thrill to watch a 17-foot truck filled with clothing donations magically transformed into new wardrobes for hundreds of plump, happy shoppers!

This year's Flea was a fantastic success! Not only was a rollicking good time had by all, but we raised over $7000 for NOLOSE, most of which will go toward scholarships for the NOLOSE conference this fall. Yay!

We are intensely grateful to our ever-expanding community. You folks shopped nearly til you dropped! Many of you even came back for more the next day! Oh, we love you, Flea Market Shoppers! Without you we'd be nothing.

The site is not being updated, & barely maintained, due to the fact that the owner has a full time job and No Fauxxx keeping her constantly busy. But, there might be updates if good stuff comes in, a great new fat girl resource is born, et cetera.

seeking fat performers for spring conference

Calling all the fatties (and fat allies)!

Smith College's new body liberation org, Size Matters, is putting on a conference on Fat Studies/Fat Lib (name TBA :) April 8th and 9th, 2006. We've got lots of amazing speakers lined up, but we're still looking for one or two great acts - dancers, bands, any kind of performer - for Saturday and/or Sunday night. Email (or comment here :) sdirecto@smith.edu ASAP if you're interested in performing, and let us know your location, your travel needs and your fee/expenses. We're operating on a super-low budget, but we're doing our best to find funding to bring a great group of people together. If you know someone who may be interested, spread the word!

So it's very skimpy right now, but Fat Girl Riot is officially up! All it needs now is, well, people to contribute - poetry, art, recipes, articles, advice, research, news or anything else you think needs to be there. In addition, the FGR Boards are up now, though there's not much there yet (come! post!).

If you have something old related to fat (liberation, culture, art, identity, health, sex, politics), please come and post and make the community the vibrant place I know it will become. (And thanks for bearing with the cross-posting!)

Soo I'm working on this new community-oriented fat site (thinking "fat girl riot" but I'm open to name suggestions)... and I was wondering if anyone wanted to share pictures of themselves to be included in a layout. It could be just a headshot, or a picture or you with friends, or something risque, basically anything that could be included in the design for a fat-positive website. If you have anything like that and you'd want to share, you can email it to me at sheana@gmail.com.

As far as the site itself goes, if anyone has written anything they'd like to share on the site (articles, poems, short fiction, art), or would like to be a regular writer/blogger, let me know. I'd also like to have a comprehensive resources directory, forums, and information/opinions on everything from politics to health to fashion to sex to everything in between. If anyone has anything they'd like to share, or just wants to be involved, comment or email at the address provided. :)

Just curious, would anyone be interested in working together to get a site similar to FGBD up? I wasn't around in the old site's heyday (heydey?) so I don't really know what it was about, but there needs to be a comprehensive, interactive space like that again and there really isn't one out there right now. I've got the resources (web space, etc) to put a site up... would anyone like to work with me to do something like that? Even if you don't want to help put something up, would you be interested in visiting the site if there were one?
