Anime Expo Day 1- Long lines, AMVs, Wackiness, and Karaoke [Jul. 1st, 2005|02:21 pm]

deeblite

Paul and I started the day off by going to pick up our badges (which we could have done last night were it not for American Airlines.).  In typical Anime Expo fashion, that took four hours waiting in line with no chairs.  Much of today was spent wandering arond the con trying to find each other so we could go to lunch (and then dinner) with Tenshi/Heather.   We finally managed to get together with some of the group and a large group of Heather's friends, and went to Denny's.  Afterwards, Paul, Jesse, Jason and I went to the AMV contest.  It was fan-fucking-tastic.  Azumanga Daioh seemed to be a favorite among the AMV creators.   My personal favorite video was The Wizard of Ozaka.   Look for it to download, its friggin great.  Just as the AMV contest was ending, I received a call from Hunter telling me that Leland made the finals in the Karaoke contest, and would be performing shortly.   Unfortunately, there was a wall of unwashed Otaku blocking our path to the karaoke room. We charged headlong into the fray and emerged from the conention center none the worse for wear, and got there just in time to miss a performance by Serena, former FFML-AXer, winner of last year's karaoke contest, and  a judge for this year's.  There were some amazing performancesin the finals, and Leland did a really amazing job, but he only managed third place.  Ater that, everyone was pooped, so we headed back to the room, and crashed for the night.

Anime Expo Day 0- The Trip part 2: Of delays and frustration [Jun. 30th, 2005|10:25 pm]

deeblite

Egads, this has been INSANE.   I'm writing this in an airplane some 30,000 feet over Texas.  Paul and I should have been AT the hotel more than an hour ago, but as it stands we've got another 3 hours of flying.

The first wing of our trip was delayed starting by about a half hour for some reason that was never really made clear.  It was kind of annoying, but not the end of the world.

4 hours later, we land in Dallas safe and sound (and, might I add, it was the smoothest landing I've ever seen.  Kudos to the pilot.) and we think we're gonna need to rush to make our connecting flight, since it was scheduled to leave at 5:15 and we didnt land until 4:45 (and we have no idea what our gate is.)  We find the proper gate, only to find that the next flight leaving from that gate is destined for Lima, Peru.  WTF, I say!  W.T.F.

After much confusion and checking with the gate agent, we find out that our flight was coming in from St. Louis, and was delayed taking off by an hour and fifteen minutes due to bad weather.  So, we wait it out.  We talk about getting something to eat while we wait, but decide we an hold out until we get to L.A.

So, we manage to board the plane according to the new schedule just fine, but somehow the people loadingthe luggage onto the plane can't do it in a timely manner, so we sit there for another half hour while they finish loading up.   After thats over with, as we're taxiing away from the gate, SOMETHING slams into the nose of the plane.  We never got a clear explanation of what it was, but because of it, we had to go back to the gate so the maintanence crew could check it over.  After another incredibly long wait, the plane gets the all clear, and we actually make it as far as the runway before someone realizes somehow that one of the flight attendant's chair doesn't bave the emergency oxygen supply.  Apparently, flying in that condition is illegal, so once again we have to go back to the gate so they can fix the oxgen supply problem - along with a few others that somehow popped up along the way... like, all that time we were sitting on the runway while they were figuring it out, we used up so much fuel that we wouldnt be able to make it to L.A., so they have to delay further to refuel us.

And that leads us up to rght now- Paul and I will not be getting to the hotel in time to pick up our conention badges tonight, meaning we have to wait in the long-ass line tomorrow morning, and we'll more than likely miss opening ceremonies (AGAIN). Also, neither one of us has eaten since this morning, so we're starving.  Needless to say, I am NOT a happy camper right now.

Anime Expo Day 0- The Trip [Jun. 30th, 2005|12:31 pm]

Paul I are sitting here at Terminal A, Gate 3 at the Philadelphia International airport, waiting for our flight.  We should be boarding in about an hour.   Thus far, the only mishaps we've had involved Paul being strip searched by a large burly security guy named "Biff."   Not much to tell at this point, but I figured this would be a good place to start.   Of course, this won't actually be getting online until we get to the hotel tonight, but I figured it would be better if I wrote as it's happening.  Here's hoping I can keep it up for the whole trip.

Here's a few pictures from our travelling )

Will be trying again to make a "live" AX report this year. Already got a few promises from others to be more active about it this year. We'll see what happens. Since a few people promised to contribute, that means I get to kick their asses if they don't.

Hey, it didn't occur to me to post this before, but... to those of you reading this community that are no longer on the list, and left at least in part because of Sky- he's not on the list anymore.  (Well, he's still on the AX list, but thats a seperate entity) so if that's the only thing keeping you away, come on back =)

Serendipity - To find the good in any situation, regardless of the current surroundings.

Seems like a lot of my friends have been having bad situations lately. Know if any of you need anything, even just a sounding board if you're having problems, I'm always willing to listen. And be glad, there's always something worse. You could be dead. The fact that you're alive means you still have a purpose and uniqueness to add to the lives of those around you.
