Fabula Nova Crystallis ("The New Tale of the Crystal")
The games in the series are all set in different worlds, but are linked by a common mythology, as well as the traits that nearly all Final Fantasy games share (such as Chocobos). The mythology of the compilation involves objects called Crystals, who reportedly "lead the world towards the future" and take the form of normal, everyday objects.
Final Fantasy XIII
The first game to be released in the compilation, Final Fantasy XIII, will be Square-Enix's flagship game for the PS3. It will feature a gunblade-wielding female warrior as the main character, a first for the Final Fantasy series, and appears to take place in a futuristic fantasy world. The name of the main character is currently unknown, as well as the names of other characters that will appear in the title. The game appears to utilize a new type of battle system which utilizes both turn-based and real-time features. It will be directed by Motomu Toriyama (FFX-2), produced by Yoshinori Kitase (FFX, Kingdom Hearts I and II, Compilation of FFVII), with character designs by Tetsuya Nomura (FFIV-XII, Kingdom Hearts I and II, "Advent Children").
Final Fantasy Versus XIII
Also being released on the PS3, this title will focus on the battle between a prince trying to protect his castle and the Crystals contained inside from an outside, alien force. The game will be action oriented and its battle system may be real-time. It will be directed by Tetsuya Nomura, and developed by the Kindom Hearts team.
Final Fantasy XIII Agito
This game will be released on the mobile phone, a platform also being explored in games like Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis and Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus (Lost Episode). The game will apparently feature twelve characters and be set in a magic school (somewhat similar to Final Fantasy VIII). It will be directed by Hajime Tabata, produced by Kousei Ito, with character designs by Tetsuya Nomura.
Besides the titles listed, it is expected that other titles in the compilation will also be announced.

In part because of the compilation's flashy and unexpected announcement, anticipation and excitement about it are high, and a number of fan sites have already been set up to follow the progress of the games' development.
