ff_epicfic is a claims/challenge community designed to promote longer fic for the Final Fantasy fandom. The community is for people looking to work on their plot development skills as well as those looking for an LJ-based outlet for longer or multi-chaptered Final Fantasy work.

The Rules |
1. This community accepts claims for longer, plot-driven fic only. Shorter fic (microfic, drabbles) and fic with no plotline (character studies, scenefic) - while perfectly acceptable and enjoyable - are not appropriate for this community. We would love to direct you to various other Final Fantasy theme communities if you need one.
1a. Our wordcount goal on fic submitted to 1b. A basic understanding of the literary concept of plot will be expected. Wikipedia defines plot as including the following aspects: Conflict, Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, and Resolution. 2. After a claim has been made, discussion of the plotline in question is not only permitted, but encouraged. Please keep details behind an lj-cut in case of spoilers. We're here to help encourage your longfic - please take advantage! More information about discussion posts is included here.
You should think about creating a discussion post for each new claim - discussing your ideas will help, I promise! You will be expected to create a discussion post if you are creating your own ‘theme’ for a ‘claim’, especially a chaptered fic. You are encouraged to create a discussion post any time you need one: whether you’re stuck on a certain aspect, have a canon question, whatever it is - this community is meant to look at works in progress as well as the finished product.
3. Write for your claim and post it here. Use the lj-cut: it is your friend. Everything submitted to
ff_epicfic should use the following headers (*asterisks* denote required header information):- Title*:
- Fandom*:
- Rating*: We suggest G / PG / PG-13 / R / NC-17
- Warnings: (if necessary)
- Word Count:
- Claim/Challenge*: details of your claim and the specific challenge it fulfills
- Featured Characters / Pairings: Only list these if relevant to the fic! Your summary should be sufficient information for the reader. We are looking to shift the focus off of character and pairing fic, because a character/pairing is not a plot.
- Notes and Related Posts*: If you are writing a multi-chapter fic, you will be expected to link to AT LEAST your Chapter Summary Page (more details here); linking to all previous chapters is very much encouraged.

3a. EDITING IS REQUIRED. Betas are encouraged; if you do not have one, please do your own editing, and do it thoroughly. Posts with poor spelling and grammar are not suitable for this community. If you do not have time to spellcheck and edit your own writing, please do not post it here.

Claims, Challenges, and Completion |
1. Claims can be made for a multichaptered, ongoing fic arc or for a set of stand-alone / one-shot fics.
Multichapter fics: Choose a fandom (FFIV, FFX, etc) and a claim. Don't worry - the claims are quite general, and if your story moves beyond the scope of your original claim, it's quite alright: you can either 'opt out' of the claim, or reword your claim to better fit your story. Series of one-shot fics: Choose a theme set. You can mix and match fandoms all you'd like within your theme set. If you'd like to claim a particular fandom, you may. As these are plot-driven fics, you cannot simply claim a character and/or pairing. Your writing can feature a relationship if appropriate (some themes depend on this!) but you cannot claim one. Works in Progress - If you have a multi-chaptered piece you're currently working on, and you want to know whether it's suitable for this community, please check the FAQ for our current claiming policy for things that have already been written.
2. The lists of claims / theme sets can be found here. You may make your claim here. A list of claims can be found here.
3a. If you are writing an unrelated series of stand-alone fics to complete a theme set, simply post them in the community. Remember the LJ-CUT. The mods will tag and archive your writings.
3b. If you are writing a multi-chaptered fic, we will require a Chapter Summary Page. This is a separate post which centrally links to all chapters of your on-going fic. Each subsequent post must then link to your Chapter Summary Page, which should be updated as each new chapter is written. More info is available here.
In the early days of this community, the mods will be in charge of keeping and updating your Chapter Summary Page; you will be responsible for linking to it with each entry. (If the community grows in complexity, THIS RULE MAY CHANGE.)
4. Completed claims, listed here, will receive a promotion post linking to the Chapter Summary Page and discussing the fic in brief. If things work out, your completed claim work may be featured elsewhere on LJ, thus earning you recognition and praise.
Comments, Crit, and Feedback |
1. ALL DISCUSSION MUST BE MATURE. This means:
There will be no bashing of: characters, pairings, authors, fic, sexual orientations, race, people, cute furry animals, or anything else. first_seventhe reserves the right to treat you like a moron if you behave like one. Discussions are encouraged! Being an asshole is forbidden!
Criticism and feedback must be delivered and received in a mature fashion.
2. CONCRIT IS ENCOURAGED HERE. This means:
AUTHORS: You may receive concrit in comments. It may not be glowing praise. It may sting. Remember that this is simply a discussion between you and the commenter, and is meant to help your writing grow. The commenter is not always right; likewise, you are not always right. Please attempt to respond kindly to concrit. Engage the commenter in a discussion rather than attacking him/her outright. And above all, DO NOT delete your story over one less-than-shining review. This offends the mods greatly. REVIEWERS: You are encouraged to leave your full opinion in a comment, but you must be polite about it. Flames are not allowed. Remember the difference between "saying nice things" and "saying things nicely": You do not have to "fluff" or "sugarcoat" your crit, but if you have something to say about the story, say it kindly. If you cannot be mature, do not leave a comment. Do not disguise a flame as "concrit". Suggested Reading: There is a much more detailed discussion on concrit here.
3. Remember your internet manners at all times.
4. We operate on a "three-strikes" offense system: you will receive warnings (via email, ideally) for your first two offenses. On the third, you MAY be banned from the community. Action will depend on the severity of your offenses. We don't want to do this, so don't make us.

ff_epicfic can be used as a plot-bunny forum: feel free to discuss issues / problems / ideas you may have encountered while working on one of your claims. Simply post with the line "Discussion" in your header, i.e. "Discussion: Elena and the Turks" or "Discussion: Spira and the Aftermath of Yevon". The post must be related to a claim with ff_epicfic - but if you've got a great idea, why not make a claim?1b.
