Dawn Dance, Stables, Night of Day 7 of Carriage Week
Stablemaster Harrigan supervised the loading of kegs of beer donated by the visiting noble houses. No one ever went hungry or thirsty at the Dawn Dance. The families never made a big show of their generosity, but each year there would be deliveries of kegs of ale, bread and cheese, smoked meats, popping corn, and bushels of pears and apples that would show up at the stables beginning once the procession was over.

The stablemaster had cleared the animals out to temporary quarters in the rear courtyard and supervised the cleaning of the stables. Servants were beginning to arrive no that the feast had begun in the main hall. Guest house servants first; the House Vasille staff would arrive later as work got finished in the main hall and ballroom. As people arrived, they pitched in to help set up tables and chairs and to move the food and the kegs into place. At this point there wasn't much need to organize. Everyone was good about helping each other, and once each new arrival had worked a bit they settled down for a drink or a game of cards or dice. A few couples paired off and made for quieter darker corners of the stables; there'd be more of that as the night wore on.

One of the House Pax staff had brought a fiddle and started up a little bit of early dancing, although the main part of the music and dancing wouldn't begin until King Spackle arrived to officially preside over the revelry.

Harrigan paused his work to fill a mug of cider. It looked to be a good night.

Caerling arrived fairly early to the Dawn Dance. She was wearing her usual blue and white servant's garb, having come directly from assisting Lady Rhianna who had shooed her away to the dance, saying that since Marie was too young to go, she could put the final touches on the gown.

Feeling unaccountably nervous about this dance because of all the rumors probably flying around about her, she immediately set about to cooking. House Kassof had donated some salted flat fish that was rare inland. Dried, they made for a very tasty treat when accompanied by ale and cider. She pulled the fish out of the basket and started setting it up on platters, smiling at friends as they came by to cook or just say hello.

She did stop to get herself a mug of ale to drink while she worked and chatted with the rest.

Kelden glanced toward Caerling from the back of the hall. The poor girl had been spotted drunk with the Fool, and another Kassof servant. Lord Stagg had laughed at the news, though there was little enough advancement in his own status for all that.

Still, she would suffer for it, he knew. Already it was clear that many of the girls who would normally have taken up trays to distribute on Caerling's behalf were keeping their distance, and doubtless many of the lads at the Dawn Dance were already sizing up dark corners. To say the thought had not crossed his own mind would be the worst type of lie, try as he might to upbraid himself for it.

Yet diplomacy was his duty, and perhaps a bit of kindness early on might set the rougher-edged lads straight and silence the whispers of the girls. He came forth with a short bow.

"Mistress Coppersmith, you find yourself shorthanded. Tell me, which tables need these delicious treats most?"

Caerling smiled at Kelden with something that might have been relief but she was tightly enough controlled to hide what she was really feeling from those who watched. "Thank you, Master Kelden. Your help is much appreciated. The trays should go to every alternating table. Once I finish this tray, I'll be mixing up a mustard sauce to go with them." She pointed out the table for Kelden to start setting trays on.

After Kelden picked up two of the neatly arranged trays and walked them to assigned tables, another servant, Marko of House Pax, came up with rows of sausages on a wooden dowel. "Miss Caerling? Where do these need to go?"

"Do they need to be cooked?" She continued to lay out the last of the salted fish.

"Yes."

"Over there by Hal. He'll add them to the grill shortly."

"Thank you." Marko bobbed his head at her.

The friendliness of Kelden and Marko seemed to break what little tension there was in her and Caerling visibly relaxed as she finished up the last platter and wiped her hands before starting to mix up the mustard sauce. She grinned as Kelden returned to get more trays.

"Even in our times of joy, the work remains the same," said Kelden with a return smile. "I clearly should have learned to play the fiddle."

"What fun would that be? Then, you would miss out on all the dancing to be done. I thought you rather liked the dance." She mixed up the mustard, spice and honey mixture as she spoke.

"Ah, well," he smiled, taking up the tray. "That rather depends upon the partner, does it not?"

"I suppose it does," She agreed.

While he delivered the last of the plates, she spooned the honey mustard mixture into smaller bowls. Suzi, a passing House Emile servant, took the large empty bowl from her with a smile saying, "I was headed to the kitchens anyway."

She started placing the sauce next to the trays set out by Kelden.

Kelden's Appearance

Kelden's tunic and cap bore little trace of his House - small surprise, given the treatment that Joffa and Stagg were likely to suffer at the tongues of those servants given to cruel humors.

His duties were ceremonial or intellectual in nature, and he preferred the lighter work of distributing foods to that of moving kegs. Despite that, his red and gold hose did show off a pair of legs to their best advantage. Racing through the court, up and down stairs, had certainly given him that blessing.

A series of delighted squeals announced the arrival of the House Slade ranger captain, Gar Logan. Unlike some of the warriors and guards who had arrived, Logan looked very much at ease in spite of attending the dance unarmed. Blades, even peace-bonded, were forbidden from the Dawn Dance.

He also paid little heed to the admiring looks from the girls as he walked over to the kegs. He drained a mug of ale and then set to work with some other House Slade men who were bringing out the wood platforms that would serve as a dance floor. Logan naturally fell into the roleo of leader of this operation, but did so without shirking his share of the lifting and hauling.

His appearance had caused some grumbling among the House Kassof people, and Caerling even caught a whisper of "... like to see him knocked off his high horse one of these days" from Hal.

Her cheeks flushed briefly when he first entered. Then, Caerling found herself something else to do. The stew needed a lot of work and it was the perfect distraction. She made no comment either way about Gar Logan while she worked. In her mind, he wasn't worth the mention.

Pirorna arrived early, and quickly found herself feeling like a babe lost in the woods. Everyone here knew each other, and they all seemed to know what to do, busying themselves with this task or that.

Picorna was among the youngest present. She looked around for her friend Freyda, but of course Freyda wouldn't be here for hours. She was working in the main hall with the Vasille staff and they would be last to arrive.

Picorna wondered if she should have waited and come later. But she'd been so excited to have permission of the First Sister that she's changed out of her robes into a plain but nice dress (Freyda had warned her against wearing anything too fancy) and rushed right over.

Now she wandered, trying to stay out of people's way. Half of her wished someone would talk to her, while the other half was frightened by that very thought.

Caerling saw the familar lost look on the girl's face and wondered if she weren't a little young for the Dawn dance. Instead she called over to her, "Hello! Could you give me a hand? I'm Caerling. I need these tubers diced for the stew I'm working on." She smiled welcoming her.

The relief was visible on Picorna's face as she quickly joined in the familiar task of helping with the meal.

"I'm Picorna. Nice to meet you, Caerling" she said, glad to have someone to call by name. A new friend, she even dared hope.

"Have you been to one of these before? It's my first time."

She wondered if she should go around admitting her inexperience, but figured it must have been obvious from the way she was standing around.

She nodded. "I have. Once. It's a good time. Everyone helps out who can and we have a big party. It can get a bit wild." While she talked, she added some diced meat and seasoning to the stew. "What house do you serve?"

Picorna was a bit taken aback by the question, never having given much thought to the houses. She kept steadily chopping the tubers, stealing a glance up at Caerling as she replied. "I serve the First Sister," she said. "Whom do you serve?"

"Oh? Very good. I'm Lady Rhianna Kassof's handmaiden. Do be careful, some of the stablehands are a bit handy, so-to-speak. An acolyte would be a good notch in their belt if you know what I mean." She shrugged.

Picorna nodded. It was the second time she had heard that advice, which only reinforced its message. And the First Sister had told her to remember her place as an acolyte...

Tearing her mind from what fate might befall her if she were not to be careful, she said, "I haven't met many of the Lords and Ladies... or anyone, for that matter, just one or two of the servants."

"Most Lords and Ladies don't notice servants unless then want something or are angry. But, it is good for servants to know them and who works for whom." She took the cut up tubers from Picorna. "Have you met anyone from House Vasille? I have a friend, Freyda. I'm sure the two of you would be as thick as thieves."

Kelden had been about to joke about Caerling's having more hands than seemed necessary, but his diplomatic mind overrode his tongue at the last moment.

"Caerling, and miss - my apologies. Hal kept us a moment longer than expected. If you need no more assitance - or, perhaps, a second mug? The stew is warming work."

Picorna shook her head. "No, I'm from Edgewood," she said, thinking back to her days on the streets of the northern frontier town. "Still, pleased to meet you, Kelden."

With a barely perceptible shiver, she turned back to Caerling. "I'll help some more," she said. "More people gets the work done faster."

After the performers were allowed to leave for the evening, Emily made her way to the Dawn Dance.

She was dressed in a beautiful white velvetine gown, with embroidery in silver, and a trim of downy feathers at her wrists, collar, and hem that added to her already swan-like appearance, with the white hair and pale skin.

She carried her lute with her, in case there would be a call for performance.

Quietly, Emily made her way inside, smiling at all the people having fun and the delicious smells of tasty foods wafting through the air.

The arrival of Saul, one of the first of the Vasille servants to make it to the stables, signals that the dancing is probably getting underway at the main hall.

Saul looks to have started into the drinking early and with a feirce determination, and he arrives with a plump scullery maid adorning each arm as he loudly announce to the ladies that if they wait their turn, there's plenty of Big Saul to go around.

Although he's customarily avoided by the serving girls, it's clear that tonight Saul is already too drunk to be much harm to anyone, and his arrival is greeted by giggles and bawdy taunts from every corner.
