Chapel Guest Suite, Carriage Week Day 7, Late Morning
Picorna was assisting the seamstress with the First Sister's dress ("Something elegant but subdued; tonight is for the nobles and I'd rather just fade into the background," Tala had requested) when a messenger arrived at the door.

She curtsied and received the "urgent" message. There had been a succession of urgent messages today and none of them had actually been urgent. Most had concerned Brother Aristos' arrangements for food at the reception that would follow the King's Ball.

She almost put the note aside when she noticed the seal. She looked for Sister Aide Nyllen, but she had stepped out. Picorna smiled. Well, in the absence of the Sister Aide, Picorna was technically entitled to handle correspondance if the First Sister was indisposed. So, perhaps indisposed was a bit of a stretch when describing sitting in a chair while a seamstress measured you.

Picorna stopped trying to justify and simply opened the letter.

First Sister Talavaria's fitting session was interrupted by what best could be described as a squeal from the antechamber.

Tala looked up to see Picorna run into the room clutching a parchment.

"Change of dress plans, First Sister! Elegant but subdued isn't gonna be good enough."

Picorna grinned widely and flashed the letter.

"Not for the Crown Prince's escort!"

Talavaria blinked. The Crown Prince had chosen her as his escort? He... well, she thought, he was a very handsome man, and surely she could have done much worse. Still, the uproar that would arise in some of the more conservative Church circles! Not only to have a woman leading the Church of Ferstaal, but for her to be chosen as the Crown Prince's escort at the Autumn Court... it thrilled the First Sister to no end.

Smiling at her seamstress, she said, "Yes, indeed, a change of plans. Still elegant, but less understated. But please do not add any of those ridiculous ruffles that have been the rage in recent months. Perhaps something with a more ancient, timeless flair?"

There would be no fading into the background for her tonight.

Picorna assisted the First Sister as the seamstress did her work. When it was finally over, the young servant couldn't contain her delight at the result.

"You look beautiful, First Sister! Just like a princess in the old stories!"

Tala was hurrying now, as she would need to go into the palace to await the Prince. She would be escorted by the Prince into the main hall and would sit at the King's table.

Tala rushed over to her writing desk and dashed off some last-minute instructions to Brother Aristos, who would be leading the Church contingent.

Picorna took the message from her and gave a quick hug all the while showering the First Sister with compliments on how lovely she'd be at the ball. As she reached the door, she realized that Tala would be on her way to the palace before Picorna returned from delivering the note. She gathered her courage for a moment.

"First Sister... I had a... A favor to ask... It concerns the Dawn Dance... Could I? Please?"

She gave a hopeful look from the doorway.

Talavaria looked at the girl. Her service had been so good... but the day after was the Meditation of the Fields, and...

"Remember, Sister Picorna," the First Sister said quietly, "Tomorrow is the Meditation of the Fields."

Picorna's face fell slightly as she nodded. Hangover day, it had been called.

Talavaria started walking towards the fireplace, then turned slightly, the impish smile on her face perfectly contrasting her elegant garments. "If you think you can stay up all night, and still be presentable for the next day's rituals, you may go. Only please remember your station, and do not disgrace the Church," she added.

The First Sister winked at her personal servant, leaning close to add, "Think of it as a sort of twisted Camp Vigil, getting through tonight and tomorrow with your dignity intact." She bid the girl farewell, and hoped she would enjoy her night. Then Talavaria let her mind wander on to thoughts of the Crown Prince.
