Shawn heard somewhere that everyone wants to be the hero in their own story, and he didn't believe it. Heroes, that is, have heroic qualities, and what would he do with those? Use them for drink holders? Heroic qualities don't buy bus passes or lunch. Shawn was downright ignoble, unrepentantly untruthful, not remotely dashing, not particularly compassionate, and brave has never entered the equation.

A brave person would look destiny in the face and kick it in the balls. A cynical person would see the destruction wrought upon the city already and just try to give it a swift end. A brave person would take the powers they've been given, and use them decisively, commandingly, and for what their heart told them to do. A sane logical broken person would hide them from the world and use them for petty gains all their life.

When he was younger, Shawn thought that he could be like the X-men, like a real world superhero. Before he took that gift and defiled it with the real world, he thought he could use it bravely. Before he learned that the real world didn't appreciate bravery. Before he found the reason that noble deeds are given freely is because you can't sell them for anything; only cowardice has a price.

The gun hadn't precisely come out of nowhere. Guns don't really do that, it's not in their nature. Shawn thinks. Unless the laws of nature have spontaneously changed, which, hell, they might. It is, after all, the end of the world. Or, rather, it's supposed to be, but he's no mindreader, he doesn't know why Lucian has done something like this.

Mindreading would have been pretty useful, actually. The other Angel's deaths had been... well, odd. Yeah, odd, but hey, it was a fight, and Lucian was crazy, but dedicated. And crazy. Yeah, definitely crazy. Shawn was kinda hoping that Lucian would actually go through with destroying the city, though. Because who the hell goes through all this, dies, and doesn't get their city blown up? And the word of the day, kids, is suck.

Actually, the word of the day isn't suck, Shawn decides. No, he's fairly sure that the word of the day is shoulda seen it coming, dumbass. Time slows down is a stupid cliche, but there's a long time coming between the point where Lucian has a gun in his hand (jesus christ it's a lucian get in the car), and the time when a bullet comes out of that gun, and there kinda seems like there's time between then and when it, well, yeah. And Lucian doesn't really look like Squall, with his face in that expression, but Shawn figures it's cool anyway, since Ris' hair is the wrong color, and he's definitely not Seifer anyways.

He hopes he won't have a death boner, because that would suck. More. He's also pretty sure that he'll defile his own dead body with nasty fluids, and he really can't, well, no, he definitely can wait. Really, he lived his life without dignity, acquiring some in death would be the stupidest damn joke the universe could ever play. Revenge is really all he could ask for in this situation. Petty revenge, as somehow harming Lucian would hurt any chances that he destroy the city.

Shawn is good at petty, though. 8D And some ideas are just too good - well, bad - to pass up. And if he can die in indignity and get Lucian a little comeupance at the same time, well, it would be one more joke that he wouldn't let the universe play on him. Shawn tries to laugh, because he knows a punchline, but not the joke, but that's what most of life has been, no reason to change now. He doesn't really have the energy for laughter, but he has the energy to do that familiar little mental twist (that he associates with his power) he's been using for things as stupid as this for years.

If Shawn is going to die in indignity, and he can't take his killer with him for the dying part, he might as well take him with him for the indignity aspect. Revenge served, Shawn-style. And if nothing else, he will have an awesome story in hell. "Yeah, well, I got revenge on my killer AWESOMELIKE. I PEED ON HIM. Yeah. Top that one."

Characters: Samail
Rating: PG

Main Entry: 1un·der·stand·ing
Function: noun
Pronunciation: "&n-d&r-'stan-di[ng]
1 : a mental grasp : COMPREHENSION

Samail does not understand this crap. He can't even begin to think about what sort of person really feels a need to kill other people (he's met some people before he thought didn't deserve to live, but killing requires a sort of effort and commitment that is creepy). Killing people on a scale like this is just bizarre.

Sam does not understand why Michael lied to him. It's not about feeling left out (yes it is), and it's not about feeling like something he can't possibly compete with has a prior claim to Michael (like hell). He lied. Repeatedly, even when questioned more than once about it. Samail didn't think Michael would do something like that. He's beginning to think that maybe, he doesn't understand who Michael is as well as he thought he did.

2 a : the power of comprehending ; especially : the capacity to apprehend general relations of particulars b : the power to make experience intelligible by applying concepts and categories
Sam is capable of understanding just fine why Michael did it. He won't say so much to anyone else, because it's not something he'll admit to himself. He's cursed destiny enough times to see that it doesn't do shit. He's looked at it from every angle he can, and the part of his brain that decides logic continues to report that nothing has changed since Michael told him. That there is nothing that CAN be changed by him, even now that he knows.

Sam can understand that he is powerless when it comes to what Michael does. He can understand it all he likes, but some part of him is stuck in defensive asshole mode, and like a cartoon character pulling at a lever until it breaks, he's not going to get out of it any time soon. Understanding has nothing to do with his feelings on the matter at all.

3 a : friendly or harmonious relationship b : an agreement of opinion or feeling : adjustment of differences c : a mutual agreement not formally entered into but in some degree binding on each side

He doesn't remember if Michael has ever called Sam his "boyfriend," or anything to that degree. He's not certain if he has done likewise. Titles have never meant much to Samail, because they mean different things to different people. And because he's had too many fuckbuddies who really didn't like being called what they were.

Samail is used to arguing with people, with finding little chinks in them and tearing something open because he can, because it makes him feel better when some part of him tears. He's really never felt like being mean to Michael. Something about Michael's gentle earnestness would make him sooner kick a crippled puppy. It's not that he sees Michael as pathetic, but somehow his whole personality makes Sam feel ashamed of his cynicism and his apathy and casual cruelty. He wouldn't admit anything of that sort for fear that someone might think he sees Michael as a saint, or some personal salvation, because he doesn't.

He doesn't know, thus, what he would call their relationship. He's never asked Michael why he puts up with someone as caustic as Sam; every time he gets that urge, he instead smiles and pretends to be- wishes he was - as nice as he can. He doesn't want to know the answer because he doesn't keep relationships long. He doesn't keep people long.

He'd like to say that he and Mike have an understanding of a sort, but the irony would be too painful even for his sense of humor.

Characters: Aidan
Rating: G

+Leeroy the magical ducttape worm. (Not capable of producing spice, btw). Aidan always wonders how one could ever use up a whole roll of the stuff, he thinks something like that might do the trick. You know, if Leeroy gets really out of hand some time. He doesn't know how to restrain a person safely. Ducttape, on the other hand, does. Maybe. =D

+Bring cats. People are allergic to fluff balls, no matter how cute. And Kinslayer is too vicious to take anywhere anyways. Even Mara finds him hard to put up with. Hopefully when he gets older he'll be less of a handful. If this city lives long enough for him to get older.

+Suggest maid cafe outfits to distract the Angels with. (Is this one 1999 compliant? Who cares!) He thinks it would be especially distracting on Gabe. The mental image alone is just plain confusing.

+Speak entirely with a fake impossibly-heavy Texan accent, and when questioned about it, play it off as if he's always had it, didn't ya'll notice it before?
