ferret transport...

  • Nov. 28th, 2009 at 6:00 PM
i'm not sure if this is a topic that's been addressed before, but i though it'd make a good post to gather some relevant information for our future reference and the reference of others.

my fella and i were speaking hypothetically on moving. either across town or across country, and how we would do it. we pulled up shop from san francisco and moved back to his hometown of san antonio, and feel as though we are not destined to make this city our long-term home. but now we've acquired pets, like our ferret, and wonder what is the best way to move a ferret (or several.)

what's your opinion, ferretish? how would you move your fuzzy buddy from one end of the country to the other? what would you do if you were road tripping to your new local for several days? what would you (or could you) do if you were flying? what are things you should consider? what are some resources? how would you plan it out?

Heat?

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 10:09 PM
So, tonight we let the ferrets out for thier nightly run around and my BF notices Boo's hind is wet. He thinks it's cause the silly goose knocked over the water bowl, but when he picks her up out of the puddle he noticed that the fur around her genitals was a pale yellow (She's white). And he said there was a slightly discolored liquid around the area. He spazzed thinking she's in heat.

We've had her about...six months, maybe seven, and she has blue dots tattooed into an ear. She was given to us, so I have no idea on her age. I have no idea about the signs of a ferret in heat, and she seems just as bouncy and mischievious as normal. My vet will be getting a call in the morning about it but BF is worried his lil girl wasn't neutered and I needinfo to either calmhim down or deal with herbeing in heat.

One of my boyfriends' ferrets seems to be losing hair on his belly / around his lower shoulders/arm pit areas. Is this a sign of likely adrenal ? his tail seems to still have hair. he is lighter than the other boys but not significantly lighter. nothing else has changed. We will take him to the vet ASAP.

Any advice?

Here is a photo of it, it's hard to see in a photo, easier to see the baldness in person. :(

Thank you for all your help.

Last night there was a big war over a plastic bag between one skunk and two little kittens.

Nevermind, I will let the photos do the talking. )

Luck Of The Irish

This is Jager in his favorite hiding spot. He doesn't seem to realize that a hiding spot is considerably less effective when you have been discovered there previously. It's now the first place I look when it's time for him to go back in his playpen, and he always seems positively shocked that I discovered him in his "clever" little hideout.

Ferret Pouch

  • Nov. 15th, 2009 at 4:30 PM
I made a "ferret pouch" for Khandi with an old blanket I haven't used in years, and she's absolutely fallen in love with it!
Pics behind cut )

I took a long strip of the fabric and folded it over, sewing it all together like that, and once it was all doubled up and sewed securely I began to make the pouch. Admittedly I had cut the fabric a bit badly and it was rather lopsided, but it ended up working out quite nicely. I am very pleased with how it turned out and Khandi loves to snuggle up inside it - it is quite warm. :)

potty training.

  • Nov. 6th, 2009 at 6:13 PM
I've successfully trained three ferrets (one female, and two males) to use a litter box. However, my new baby (2 month old female) is having a really hard time learning. I've tried the 'put the 'accident poops' and/or 'urine covered tissues' in the litter box where they're supposed to go, and it's failed. (This is all it took for my first three). I've made sure the cage is squeaky clean, washed their bedding, and have also tried blocking off the corners either by putting something there, or using the 'corner stoppers' with no luck. I'm currently in the middle of washing their bedding (the forth time in 5 days!!!) and adding yet another litter box. But, if this doesn't work, I don't know what to try next. Help me?

meet laney.

  • Nov. 4th, 2009 at 10:56 PM

Introducing Laney!

Ferret math has struck my husband and I! We decided to adopt this beautiful little girl this past Monday! She celebrated her two-month 'birthday' on Monday, as well! Her brothers, Kodi and Davey have done really well with her so far! In fact, I was surprised to see that Kodi actually has some "motherly instincts" (or maybe he just likes his sister!) It was the oddest thing I've ever seen with ferrets, but Kodi literally showed Laney around the cage; he walked her through our whole ferret nation cage, and pushed her up the ramps! She's SO much small than our boys (who are six months old). Anyway, I just thought I'd introduce her to you all! =)
