America Ferrera Becomes a Wedding Planner

ET takes you behind-the-scenes on the set of America Ferrera's upcoming movie in which she walks down the aisle during a large lavish wedding.

The "Ugly Betty" star talks about how she's been researching her role in 'Family Wedding Project' by reading endless stacks of bridal magazines and studying wedding gowns. She says the good thing is that even though she's had a taste of what real brides go through, "there's no pressure of it actually being my wedding."

Watch the video to see America show off the wedding ring she'll wear in the movie and hear what famous designer made her beautiful gown. She also talks about her kissing scenes with hunky co-star Lance Gross, who reveals in his interview with ET that he is currently engaged so the movie is "a page out of my life."

The movie, which also stars Oscar winner Forest Whitaker, hits theaters next year. For more movie news and exclusives, head over to ETonline's Summer Movie Guide!

Movie filmed in El Paso
Posted: May 19, 2009 10:00 AM

EL PASO, Texas -- Hollywood's spotlight is once again shining on the Sun City as an El Paso native marks his directorial debut.

The film is called "The Dry Land" and it follows a soldier just home from Iraq. What better backdrop for some of the filming than El Paso, home to Fort Bliss? "You grow up dreaming about this," said El Paso native and now Hollywood writer director Ryan Piers Williams. He knows the subject matter of his film is a delicate one, even more delicate than any of the camera lenses at the El Paso International Airport.

In the film, a soldier arriving home from the war deals with post-traumatic stress disorder. "I think that's what people really want, they want a connection, they wanna understand what it's like for these coming home. They don't want a political message shoved down their throat," Williams said.

America Ferrera of "Ugly Betty" plays the soldier's wife who helps her husband adjust. Ferrera is Williams' real-life girlfriend.

"He's very influenced by this town being from here, and like I said, this being a military town, it's all around us and I think this is a subject that hasn't been discussed very much," said associate producer Lindsay Hovel, who is also from El Paso. "To be able to bring it here, to our home town is a dream come true, we're so excited," Hovel said.

Williams got his start working at KVIA while he was in school. Williams said the project has the blessing of the U.S. Army and the Department of Defense.

"The Dry Land" is on track for release some time next year.

America Ferrara Getting Married
By Katey Rich: 2009-05-18 08:18:52

Forest Whitaker is many things-- an Oscar-winning actor, a guy capable of being terrifying when the opportunity arises, and a veteran of the 2000 debacle Battleship Earth. But is he funny? His filmography wouldn't tell you so, but Whitaker is giving it a shot anyway, signing on alongside Carlos Mencia and America Ferrera for Fox Searchlight's untitled family comedy.

Brown Sugar director Rick Famuyiwa will be directing his own script, about two fathers (Whitaker and Mencia) who have to set aside their feud for the wedding of one's daughter (Ferrera) and the other's son. Variety isn't saying who will play the son, but since filming starts next month in L.A., I'd imagine some young black actors are out there in negotiations right now.

This is the second project in about two months that has reminded me greatly of the Broadway show The Fantasticks, which I guess isn't surprising-- that play has a great and timeless story about feuding neighbors who come together when their children fall in love. It's not an original story they're working with at Searchlight, but if they work their usual magic, they'll make it worth watching anyway.

I am obsessed with the movie, Brown Sugar, so if this is as good as that one, i'm on board. :)

America Ferrera Set to Star in New Film “The Dry Land”
by Mariela Rosario | 04.30.2009

America Ferrera has signed on to star and executive produce a new film from Maya pictures entitled The Dry Land. Ferrera is set to star alongside Ryan O’Nan, Wilmer Valderrama, Jason Ritter and Melissa Leo of Frozen River fame, who was nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award last year. The film will tell the story of a young GI who has just returned from the war in Iraq and finds it more difficult than he imagined to readjust.

Ryan O'Nan will be featured as as the troubled vet and Wilmer Valderamma will play his platoon buddy, whom O'Nan seeks out in an attempt to find redemption for the horrible acts they committed while fighting the war. America Ferrera will play O'Nan's wife and Leo will play his mother.

The film is also being produced by Heather Rae, winner of an Independent Spirit Award for Frozen River. Ryan Piers Williams, Ferrera's long-term boyfriend, wrote the script and will be making his directorial debut with the film.

AMERICA FERRERA, 25

While she lives both extremes of the beauty spectrum – glammed up for parties and premieres, toned down for her Emmy-winning role on Ugly Betty – the L.A. native finds her happy medium within. "I am all for beauty, and I love feeling pretty," she told InStyle magazine in 2007. "But it's more important for me to look in the mirror and feel good about myself than worry about what other people think."

America Ferrera as Dolores Huerta

A fierce advocate for migrant farmers, Huerta cofounded, with César Chávez, what became the United Farm Workers of America. In 1975 she played a critical role in enacting policies that allowed workers to bargain for better wages and conditions. Today, at age 79, Huerta continues to be active—last year she campaigned for Hillary Clinton’s presidential run.

“She saw her own opinion and voice as [something as] powerful as any man’s.”—America Ferrera, 25, of ABC’s Ugly Betty, holding a sign that reads “strike” in Spanish.
