Movie filmed in El Paso Posted: May 19, 2009 10:00 AM
EL PASO, Texas -- Hollywood's spotlight is once again shining on the Sun City as an El Paso native marks his directorial debut.
The film is called "The Dry Land" and it follows a soldier just home from Iraq. What better backdrop for some of the filming than El Paso, home to Fort Bliss? "You grow up dreaming about this," said El Paso native and now Hollywood writer director Ryan Piers Williams. He knows the subject matter of his film is a delicate one, even more delicate than any of the camera lenses at the El Paso International Airport.
In the film, a soldier arriving home from the war deals with post-traumatic stress disorder. "I think that's what people really want, they want a connection, they wanna understand what it's like for these coming home. They don't want a political message shoved down their throat," Williams said.
America Ferrera of "Ugly Betty" plays the soldier's wife who helps her husband adjust. Ferrera is Williams' real-life girlfriend.
"He's very influenced by this town being from here, and like I said, this being a military town, it's all around us and I think this is a subject that hasn't been discussed very much," said associate producer Lindsay Hovel, who is also from El Paso. "To be able to bring it here, to our home town is a dream come true, we're so excited," Hovel said.
Williams got his start working at KVIA while he was in school. Williams said the project has the blessing of the U.S. Army and the Department of Defense.
"The Dry Land" is on track for release some time next year.
