Despareaux and literary fourth wall Just read Tale of Despareaux book and realized how talking directly to your audience in a book has downs sides and advantages. In comics, they say a character "breaks the fourth wall" when the character acknowledges that it is in a comic and specifically if it talks directly to the reader. None of the characters in Despareaux "break the fouth wall" but the writer certainly does saying stuff like "you sould look that word up in the dictionary" and adressing the audience as "reader" often. At first I found this to be condecending and a bit anoying but later, that style proved very powerful when pointing out the emotional turmoil within the characters while still able to stand back and let you feel those characters emotions without literary devices getting in the way (because if the author was talking to you as a reader, you knew it...no tricks). Such a concept is part of my intention of having a character in my webcomic being the author; that character being an artificial intelligence autonomous computer program living on the internet named Ann Vole who is designed as a research assistant program but Ann did her own research and the webcomic is the result of her research. With the character talking directly to you, you can also get a sense that it is real rather then a story..."mocudrama" style. |

Now here's something interesting... Hat-tip to jblaque Barack Obama has promised voters that, under his economic plan, 95% of American families will receive a tax cut (despite McCain/Palin's thus-far successful misinformation campaign). So what's your Obama tax cut? Find out here, post your results in the comments section, then pass it on! By the way, my cut comes to $433.92. Not bad. John McCain would tax me $353.33 MORE than Barack Obama! |

Eighteen days out. Alright the trip is planned for all intents and purposes. I'm leaving here on the 24th or 25th and spending the night of the 25th with D'Bandit in Buffalo. I leave there very early in the morning on the 26th(I mean VERY early) and arrive in the suburbs of Chicago 9 hours later to spend a weekend with Shale. I leave there at some point on the following Monday the 29th(not sure what time, depends on a couple factors) and arrive in the Twin Cities area 7 hours later. I will be spending the next two nights on my own, but the days are unsure. That Wednesday the 1st through the 5th I'll be staying with Nauta, and Monday the 6th through Wednesday the 8th I'm with Tim. I do not yet know what's up that night, but I'll figure it out. From there back to Chicago and Shale as long as he desires(or money allows) and then one more night in Buffalo then home. To all local furs, FurFright is likely a no go for me, as it is so close to when I get home. We'll see if a miracle happens. Current Mood: excited |

pentecostal parade I'm witnessing a pentecostal parade downtown right now. I now know what it feels for an evangelist to go downtown for a coffee and bump into the pride parade.
Also, apparently churches aren't as open to new members...I have not only been skipped by several pamphleteers, but one lady deterred her little girl from handing me a flyer, saying "no, not him, give one to them' pointing at a sweet hetero couple one step away.
Woots!
Heh...the jesus 'bro' crew just avoided me like the plague. Fun! |

10 Feral! Revelations! In no particular order:
1) You don't need a clipboard to run a camp or con...I didn't touch a single clipboard all week.
2) "After ten years of hammering a nail with the claw-end of the hammer, we decided to flip the hammer and give it a try." Wilykat's genius metaphor for how this year's Feral ran compared to previous years. Essentially...both approaches get the job done...but one is a lot easier ;)
3) When your feet get wet STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING AND CHANGE YOUR SOCKS...and bring a second pair of shoes just in case. A man's soul is in peril when his feet are hurting, and dude...my feet were HURTING driving back from Arowhon ;)
4) The Musicians Circle, Poetry Corner, Sing A Long and Drum Circle...the last three years have proven that these are just impossible to get to when in charge of the con, even if they're the events you plan to attend year after year. I made ten minutes of the Musicians Circle in 07, and I think actually played a song in 05, I haven't been to a Poetry Corner since getting embarassed by my own poem in 03, last Drum Circle was also 03, and Sing A Long...god, I don't think I've EVER made the Sing A Long ;)
5) The reason why the porch at Cabin 36 is so easy to get stuck on was ENTIRELY the chairs...take away the chairs, suddenly its less tempting to hang out there! I didn't sit and smoke a single cigarette at my cabin...hell, I hardly remember even BEING there this year, which is odd cause last year it seemed we spent half the con on the porch ;)
6) You CAN bring your parents to a con and make it work...so long as your parents are cool and easy to get along with ;) Mama Roo smoked on the Main Lodge porch chatting with furs all day, Papa Goyle taught a workshop and got himself quite drunk at the Sponsors Event...gold!
7) THE CAMPERS ROCK! This year I was able to actually meet a few new people, play some dodgeball, HANG with people I usually have to run by every year. Example: MonFurs...dudes, we need to get drunk sometime next year, I had a blast at Dodgeball and chatting outside the dance :) I think I had more opportunity to hang out with people than EVER before.
8) AROWHON STAFF ROCK! They stayed at the dance late, they took Wily along on an Arowhon prank...the cross-pollenation has happened! Every year Arowhon interacts with us and our culture...this year, for the first time, a furry was brought into AROWHON culture! Gavan was great and so helpful! And I also got a chance to chat with Leon, the owner, a couple of times as opposed to the friendly nods that we tended to do while rushing off to do whatever was on our priority list. If only JJ was there too!!
9) Feral Staff and Go Furs Rock! Not only were things smooth, they were fun! Everything was pulled together without incident, the Go Furs impressed the hell out of all of us! We are definitely a furry event where some people (ie. me) have to stress it out leading up to Day One and make sure everythings in place, but once we're in the Algonquin air nothing can stop us. It's hard to run an event where you need to make sure you've brought everything you need...there's no Staples or Grocery Store down the street...the Feral staff all problem solve like it's nothing at all, are friendly and helpful...I love it :)
10) ...Feral 09 is just around the corner ;) I'm sorting boxes, doing inventory, sending emails, organizing our first meeting, planning for opening registration, going to a journalists interview, getting a plan together for the 09 website, answering emails asking questions about Feral 09, and have officially made the 'Feral 09' folder on my computer. Con Ops 09 appears to be open for business ;)
FERAL 08 ROCKED THA HOUSE! Feral 09 can only be better!! :) |

Introducing: Wild Nights. An outdoor furry event at Lake of the Ozarks, Mo Over the last few months a few of us have got together to start planning a furry outdoor event here in Missouri. We’re calling it “Wild Nights”. Here is some general information... What: Wild nights is going to be a furry outdoor event, similar to Oklacon and Camp Feral. Essentially you will have some events that you would normally see at a Furry Con, while there will also be events that will be more camp like, and outdoorsy. Pred / Prey is a great example of this. Where & When: We’ve decided to have the event at the Lake of the Ozarks State Park. There are several group camps there that will fit our needs. Plus the staff there is really cool! We have applied for the use of the Clover Point Group Camp on the dates surrounding the weekend of April 25th, 2009. All applications for use of Group Camps are reviewed and accepted in the month of November. Meaning that the set date may be pushed forward or back a week depending on the needs of the State and those groups that might have priority over us. For this reason, registration for the event will not be open until November of this year. On the internet you can find information about the event at http://www.wildnights.org/ Why: Why not? :) We’re certainly hoping to have an awesome time with this and I think the fun alone is a great reason! I hope to see a lot of my friends at this event. I have been on staff for a few events and cons, and have started a smaller event before, but this is something much larger then anything I have done in the past. I would love to have your support! I've been waiting for the dust to settle now for, oh, maybe two months now? The big things in life right now: post-AC thoughtfulness, the hella move, Feral! awesomeness, and my job. After AC was a bit of an eye opener for me in a social sense. I don't really know how best to describe it. I had a fun time. Jaf and I were busy a lot during the day with our table, and there were a lot of people we wanted to be able to spend some time with. I know it's always a little rough at a con, scattered all over the place, to spend a lot of time with everyone. I'm always happy to get the time I do get with my far away friends, and I always wish for more, and I always feel like I could have spent more. But this was the first time where I felt people were annoyed or upset with me because of it. That baffles me. I don't like to think there is a hidden directive at work, that the time I spend with people is some how not living up to their expectations. But when it's spelt out for me so clearly -- it's really off-putting. The move went well. There was a a lot to do, and probably way more work than I should have tried to fit into one day. But it all got done, and the new place is coming together great. It's an adjustment, but I like it. There is enough space for me to spread out the stuff I've got, go through it, sort, keep, and toss. I'm working on reducing the footprint my life leaves. Nothing like packing up and moving all your stuff to make you realize you've got way too much of it. A week after moving was Feral! This year is up there as one of the best years. The weather was perfect, got to hang out with everyone -- ended up in the same cabin with all our roommates at home, did some leather working, tennis, sold some figurines, it was all amazing. I walked around in suit for what felt like hours outside, quite comfortable until I realized I'd stopped sweating and need to get a big drink of water :) .. later that night it was so freezing I slept in the body suit. In the morning I woke up to see my tail hanging out of my sleeping bag. Too cute in my mind. Feral is the (un)con were I consistently never feel pulled in any number of directions. Everything just happens as it does with no worries or chaos. Thank you con staff and campers for making Feral what it is. :) And that brings us to this week, to yesterday, where I find out my 3 month contract at my current job, with the understanding of moving to full time afterwards is really a 4 month contract with the potential of maybe full time with no option to extend the contact. What it boils down to is by the end of next week, it's been suggested to me that I will no longer be working here. I'm amazingly unimpressed with how the matter has taken this long to be communicated. At this point I am thinking of my options, of potentially not even signing full time even if they offered. I'd really hoped to be able to tie up the work side of life for a little while so I could focus my energy back into my life side of life -- looks like that might not be happening when I thought. In the mean time -- it's Friday, I'm treating myself to a special lunch (not unemployed yet!), and Jaf and I have a weekend to demolish with our housemates & friends. Life -- I know you're out there, trying to get me to hate you. But I still like you. ^^ Current Mood: awake |

Continuation of last post Due to using my cel phone to post, I cannot edit the previous post so here is a fourth interest of mine:
I am convinced that animals have much closer a brain to humans then given credit for. Due to this, I am very interested in animal activities that involve their brains and are shared activities or experiences to humans. The three main catagories of animal activites are reproduction, food, and home building. These three activities are also shared with humans so I am interested in things like the sex lives of animals because you can see how human-like many of their sex rituals are to humans. What foods various species like and why is very interesting too and resulted in me spending many hours watching wild or pet animals taste-test the various foods I left out for them. Dreaming is also shared with many species resulting in many hours spent watching pet rodents dream as they sleep in my hands. Many individual pet rodents make elaborate nests or tunnel systems when given the materials to do so. I love watching them plan and alter those plans with a clear goal in mind. This deliborate planning (and anoyence when fellow cage mates mess with their plans) shows a brain with goals, three dimetional visioning, planning, inventory, measuring, and other such activities generally thought to only be human. This adds an extra interest in small rodents due to how small their physical brain is but how human-like their thought processes are. |

Adicted to the internet...or not I spent a lot of time on the internet, days in a row without stopping dozens of times even. On the outside it looks like I am addcted to the internet but I don't think so...well maybe to Google searches and Wiki a little. What I realize is that what I am really after is someone who shares some of my deep interests and I am not finding such people. These deep interests include:
I want to find ways to have two-way communication on an abstract level with any form of non-human (animal or artificial intelligence or even extra-terestrial). I do communicate with God in such a way but I want more. Related to this interest is interest in software and hardware development to make systems to train animals to talk for every aspect of their daily life and hopefully have their mothers train them to talk and use measurement of their "verbal IQ" to breed for any genetic factors to improve the test subjects as I develop the systems. Creating artificial intelligence is an interest related to this communication desire too but NOT the "turring machine" kind that can pass for a real human in a conversation. What I want is the kind that actually make their own decisions based on their own desires and emotions. That approch leads to very different programming stratagies that I do not see the AI people persuing.
The other main interest is living completely independently from society while still remaining in society. Part of this is an interest in the structured anarchy or theocracy that God, Moses, and Jethro devised for Isreal and how such a system can be made fuctional in our modern society. The real interest though is in energy self-sufficient living. This includes making your home complete with all the modern amenities but without having utilities or needing to buy any disposable parts (for example, buying those vaccuums that do not need filters or bags). This also includes growing or raising your own food year-round but in an urban setting. Heading out into the wilderness and becoming a hermit or a Ludite is NOT what I am thinking. Nor am I interested in personal security when "the sh*t hits the fan" or ways to survive a war or global disaster (although I think my methods accomplish such well). My interest is purely the thought that a world where everyone could easily achive such independence would be what I imagine heaven to be.
My third interest is connected to the first one but unique enough for it's own section. I love to experience what it would be like in another person's or being's body. I imagine myself in the body of various animals as I go to sleep as far back as I can remember. I love making animation where I can be any creature as I make them making move and talk. I can dress up in different outfits and take on a different personality for each. I can do a wide variety of voices and accents and even do both genders. I can do puppets well bringing anything on my hand to life. Being in a mascot suit is the best place to be for me. It is said "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" so I look at this as praise to the Creator but that is just an excuse...I don't know why I have such a strong desire to act as a non-human so much. The "furry" community shares this interest with me to a degree but... They all seem to have a slightly different reason for their interest in "furry" stuff then me. I think my interest is related to comunication with non-humans except I become the non-human and watch people interact with that non-human I have become. |

Holy fuck!!!
Just in case you're bored, and your body has adapted to a vast assortment of energy beverages and supplements....
go to your local GNC and buy all the "Liquid Speed" you can get your paws on!! I just drank one because I'm on my night shift turnaround and I had it on hand because I love to impulse buy things with demented names. Now I have to tell you that I'm full of spaz, insane levels of spaz for a "natural" product!
Reading the label is amusingly compelling... they don't give actual numbers for the good stuff, it goes like this:
all the good shit: **
**: daily value not established
Things under the ** banner: caffeine taurine L-Tyrosine Glucuronolactone Vanadyl Sulfate L-Phenylalanine
and some other shit I don't know... what I do know is I'm twitching like a 4 year old who just ate halloween for the whole neighborhood and I'm hardly an amateur in the herbal zoom department!!
Get it before it gets banned boys and girls, I'm going to! *giggles*
and FUCK YOU bill C-51

*smirks* Best <pick your poison here> in the fandom! Based on discussions with the Huscoon, and his claim that may or may not be valid anymore after his poor finish at MFM..., he has bestowed the title of fandom's greatest tennis player in my name, after destroying him and his 14 set winning streak! :D And to back up his claim, I have yet to lose in tennis against anyone in the fandom, sooooo... it's valid! *nods and smirks* I do also own wins against Aiden, Stevie, and Skuff too, so I'm not just a one-hit wonder ;) Current Mood: cheerful |

In lieu of actual content... a funny QOTD! Co-worker 1 (dropping his laptop to the ground with a clatter): "Oh shit!"
Various other co-workers: "Oooh!" "Ouch." "Oh no!" etc.
Co-worker 2 (Cheerily as well as QOTDably): "Now you have two laptops!"
Awesome.
