| The Lollee and Ziactrice Home for Wayward Books at Fencon |
[Sep. 29th, 2008|03:57 pm] |
As I've already told selenite , Lollee and I will be opening our hotel room to the sheltering and hopeful placement of any and all wayward books. I will post up some sort of message/sign to announce which room we are assigned, whereupon anyone may feel free to drop off and pick up books whenever: 1) the door is propped open, 2) you can ambush either of us and get agreement to open said door for the dumping of unwanted or the loading of newly adopted books, or 3) after-hours during the regular party-room-hopping trail.
If there is a Great Deal of response, I may ask about getting a room on the Desginated Party Floor / Area, but since this is books, I don't expect there will arise a great amount of Unwanted Noise Issues. We also do not wish to be competitive with any actual book-dealers who are paying to vend, so we'll try to keep it after-hours and definitely without renumeration or quibbling of exchange rates going on. If you have different ideas for how to exchange your books other than potluck, blind drop off and pick up, you're welcome to do your own sort of exchange. This will be solely leave as you want, grab as you like, and try to be fair (only take a few more than you leave - if you want to clean us out, show up Sunday just before room-closing, etc.) basis. This is mainly just to help those of us who are book-aholics de-clutter a bit, or perhaps just circulate the stale ones for something new.
However, in the interests of full ulterior motives disclosure, both Lollee and I secretly hope that said literary bribery, er, hospitality might result in a few donations of the more comestible sorts circulating to our room in the hands of eagerly anticipated and hoped-for guests and visitors, which would make for an entirely enjoyable evening given that neither one of us perambulate so well after a long day of convention-treading. I wouldn't put it past us to have a pot of Far Better than Usual Coffee made, and cookies or other snacks about. |

| FenCon Charity Auction News |
[Sep. 22nd, 2008|12:21 pm] |
As some of you know, FenCon's charity this year is Reading and Radio Resource, a group that works on providing alternatives to reading for those who are visually impaired.
We are also going to have a couple of Arthur C. Clarke-related panels this year.
Yesterday my wife and I had an idea. Why not see if we could get a copy of The Last Theorem (Clarke's last book, and autographed by Frederick Pohl) for the Charity Auction?
I received the following email:
"I am today mailing you a copy of the British edition (simultaneous publication with the American edition), Michael, autographed by Frederik Pohl. Since it is rarer in the U.S., perhaps it will bring a higher bid. Good luck with the charity auction. Since my nephew, now in his fifties, has been blind from birth, this is a cause very near to our hearts. Betty Hull
Dr. Elizabeth Anne Hull, Professor of English, Emerita"
Pretty neat, huh?

| FenCon and Vadercast |
[Jul. 4th, 2008|07:51 am] |
Vadercast has posted their latest podcast called The DO's of Convention Organizing
FenCon V's Conchair, Russ Miller, participated in the podcast.
http://www.vadercast.com/
"Our first live show on Talkhoe! With things settling down around Fedcon USA, it was important to us here at Vadercast to do a show about how a convention should be run. We have had the best example of how NOT to run a convention come through DFW, now its time to let the pros speak out. We have Mark Walters from Sci-Fi Expo and Dallas ComiCon, Todd Carlton from All-Con, Russ Miller from Fencon, and our own Cole Houston who, along with Catherine, organizes the APOTAC’s Comic Toy and Collectable Swap Meets. All are local to the DFW area and have multiple successful conventions under their belt. For any and all who are looking into or just want to know some of the behind the scenes info about convention organizing, most definitely check out this episode." |

I haven't heard much buzz about it on the local con forums but I'll admit to being enough of a Harry Potter fan that I might spring for a day pass to check it out. |

| Important Message |
[Jun. 14th, 2008|09:41 pm] |
My name is Michael Nelson, and I am part of the Executive Committee for FenCon (with an N), a Dallas-based, non-profit, literary science fiction convention.
Our organization - the Dallas Future Society, which holds FenCon (www.fencon.org) - is in no way, shape or form associated with FeDConUSA.
We first heard about that organization last year, and were somewhat taken aback that they had chosen a name so close to ours, seeing as we had been in existence for over four years at that time.
We are working on a press release which we plan to send to as many SF related information sources as possible to explain that this similarity in names should not reflect on our organization or convention.
FenCon prides itself on being a successful, non-profit, fan-run convention, which is operated in a professional manner. We always strive to show the highest respect to both our guests and members.
If you feel the need and have opportunity to spread this information to other SF professionals or fans, we would greatly appreciate the effort. As you know, a convention such as ours relies heavily on word of mouth, and any negative implications can be unintentionally damaging.
Thank you for your attention.
Michael Nelson |

| Meisha Merlin Warehouse |

Some of you may be interested:

"To All You Book-loving Atlanta Locals:
I just got a note from Sean Wallace, Publisher/Editor with Prime Books/Wildside Press. It seems that SF/F publisher Meisha Merlin, which declared it was shutting down in November, has a rather large amount of stock (tens of thousands of books) in its Stone Mountain warehouse (1440 Kelton Drive, Stone Mountain) that needs to be rescued or it will all be destroyed/recycled.
Sean is renting a truck which can fit fifteen pallets, single-stacked, or thirty double-stacked, but there's no forklift available, only a pallet jack. So he has to fill the truck by hand. He'll be in town Tuesday and Wednesday (4/22 and 4/23) to load up, and he's asked me to spread the word that he's desperate for volunteers to help him. Anyone who volunteers can cart off any books they want that don't fit into the truck.
If you can help out or know of folks who might be able to, email Sean at: seanwallace@comcast.net " |

| FenCon Toastmaster Announcement |
[Mar. 24th, 2008|08:16 am] |
FenCon is pleased to announce that Howard Waldrop will be Toastmaster at FenCon V in Dallas on October 3 - 5, 2008.
Howard is a Nebula award winning, World Fantasy award winning, and Hugo nominated writer.
Howard is also a Texas writer which fits in nicely with FenCon's theme of "Celebrating 50 years of SF conventions in Texas".
http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?Howard_Waldrop
http://www.sff.net/people/waldrop/intro.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Waldrop
"Waldrop's stories combine elements such as alternate history, American popular culture, the American South, old movies (and character actors), classical mythology, and rock 'n' roll music. His style is sometimes obscure or elliptical. The stories are often considered entertaining: Night of the Cooters is The War of the Worlds told from the perspective of a Texas sheriff (a homage to Slim Pickens); Heirs of the Perisphere involves robotic Disney characters waking up in the far future; Fin de Cyclé describes the Dreyfus affair from the perspective of bicycle enthusiasts." |
