“There’s no news yet, ma’am” the technician at the information desk said to a nervous Olivia Benson. It was the fourth time she’d asked for news that hour, in-between bouts of pacing and attempts at reading Good Housekeeping.
“Liv, calm down,” Alex closed the current issue of said magazine and looked at her lover, “I’m sure she’ll be fine. The doctors will let us know when there’s news.”
The plump, middle-aged technician who was entering data on the computer looked over at Alex and nodded with sympathy and compassion. She saw worried people every day, and she could always empathize.
“Alex, you didn’t see the way that guy hit her! She… she looked like she was barely breathing…” the fretting detective who was still wearing her running sweats looked like she was almost about to cry.
“Honey, come sit down,” Alex patted the black vinyl covered waiting room chair next to her and sweetly reminded Olivia, “you’re worrying isn’t going to get us news any faster.”
Olivia sat down beside her lover and Alex leaned over to kiss her cheek, then gently rubbed her back and tucked her relatively short hair behind her ear. “It was just a shock, you know? I was out for a run, and then… the guy didn’t even stop! He… just kept going.” Olivia rested her head on Alex’s shoulder as the blonde pulled her closer, kissing and comforting her.
“I know, but if she really wasn’t breathing I’m sure the doctors would be working on her right now,” she leaned her cheek against the top of Olivia’s head and stroked her arm, enjoying being near the woman of her dreams and helping her decompress.
“You’re probably right…”
“Oh, if she was in critical danger the doctors would operate immediately! We are short staffed today, and there is a wait, but we’d never let a patient go untreated unless they were stable.” The technician, overhearing their conversation, was clearly shocked at the implication that any doctor in her office would let a patient who was in critical condition wait for medical attention.
“Well that’s nice to hear,” Alex looked over at her, “we’ve never been to this emergency room before, and it is New York City after all, so you never know what kind of service you’ll get,” she said, trying to explain her girlfriend’s fear before resting her cheek back on Olivia’s head as the technician nodded with understanding and went back to entering data. “See there, Liv?” she spoke softly into her hair, “she’s in good hands.”
The doors through which they had immediately taken the patient when Olivia had first rushed in now opened. “Ms. Benson?” a Jamaican man in a white lab coat asked the waiting room.
“Any news?” Olivia asked, immediately getting to her feet.
“You’re Ms. Benson?” Olivia nodded. Howls and an assortment of other noises could be heard in the background now that the doors were open. “She’s going to be just fine. When the bike hit her it put her into a state of shock. But, luckily there are no broken bones or internal bleeding, and she’s relaxed and moving around… well…”
Alex, who had put the magazine down and walked over to Olivia, grinned and found her lover’s hand, “Great! That’s wonderful…” she said, interrupting the doctor.
Olivia looked at him and then at Alex, ecstatic, “Can we see her?”
“Of course, but,” the doctor began, “the shock made the situation a little more complicated…”
“More complicated?” Olivia felt her stomach drop.
“Yes, it seems to have induced her into labor…”
“Labor?” Alex asked, “she’s pregnant?”
“Was pregnant…” the doctor smiled, genuinely happy especially because it was his first time delivering chipmunks, “now there are four new babies.”
“Babies?” a huge smile grew on Olivia’s face, “can we see them?”
“Of course.” The doctor led the two women through the rest of the hospital and into an examining room.
“Oh my god… they are sooooo cute!” both Alex and Olivia cooed as they first got a glimpse of the mama and the tiny little ones who were stretching about, their eyes still closed. Olivia crouched beside the shoebox she’d originally brought the mother in to get a better look.
“I guess we can’t hold them, huh?” Olivia wondered, fighting her desire to go pick up the mother and the adorable babies. Her ability to connect with victims was quickly expanding to include other species.
“I’m sorry, no human contact. That way they’ll be able to adjust to the wild when they’re released. We’ll look after them until then.”
----
“Thanks for your help,” Alex smiled at the technician on their way out.
“Glad she wasn’t hurt,” the woman kindly replied and waved as they walked out the door.
“I love you,” Alex kissed her lover’s nose, and then her lips. She couldn’t help but radiate affection for this woman who had woken her up early on a Sunday morning desperately looking for a shoebox and asking her to look ‘pet hospitals’ up in the phonebook. “I love this side of you.”
Olivia smiled and returned the kiss, “and I love you. Let’s go home.” She rested her arm around Alex’s waist as they began walking, “um, Alex?”
The blonde, knowing exactly what was on her girlfriend’s mind, answered, “yes, of course we’ll come and visit them tomorrow.”
