Maledicte
Writer: Lane Robins
Genre: Fantasy
Pages: 434

Just finished this dark fantasy debut by Lane Robins! People are comparing it to Carey's Kushiel's Dart, but I find it more The Counte of Monte Cristo than Kushiel, though there's definitely elements of comparison. The book isn't as sexually explicit as Kushiel, but it's still very dark in content, and of the cast of characters, only one is "good" in the sense of a hero. Everyone else, including the title character Maledicte, is an anti-hero, and that's what makes the story so fascinating.

The review's in my journal, if anyone's interested. As always, comments and discussion are most welcome.

REVIEW: Lane Robins's MALEDICTE

Happy Reading! :)

nice cover
i have to ask, as a woman with sex issues, is there any forced sex? if so, is there a lot? i can handle it, in small doses, but i like to know before i start, and i won't read kushiels dart because of the basic subject matter. it makes me uncomfy and i like to not be uncomfy in that sort of way when i read stuff.

No, there's really not. There's one scene I can think of off the top of my head, but it's not extensive, and any other ocassions, which aren't really forced but I suppose it depends on how you look at it, are far more vague and hinted at.

Save for the one scene, no, I can't think of any forced sex scenes. The sex scenes on a whole were pretty tame, I thought.

Now, Kushiel's Dart is VERY sexually explicit, but there's little, if any, in that book that I would consider forced sex. There's a scare, and the heroine occassionally has to give in to men she'd rather not in order to survive, but sex is a huge part of who she is, and it's both pleasure and a job and a tool. A skill. I can't speak for the other books because I haven't read them, but Kushiel's Dart didn't raise any bells in terms of forced sex, and I say that being one who's sensitive and VERY TIRED of rape scenes.

Hope this helps! :)

thanks :)
well, as i said, i am a women with sex issues, and in honesty, i don't really like reading any (unless it's gay men :) ) so im still iffy abotu kushiel's dart, but i think i'll give this a go if it's fairly tame. the cover alone makes me think it deserves my coin :)
