legality of burlesque
Hi everyone,

My college burlesque troupe is putting on our first show tonight, and the local cops have threatened arrest. We're being quite careful already about concealing our naughty bits, but we're in New York State, where as far as I know it's completely legal to walk around topless. As far as I'm concerned this is all BS, though I'm not sure why they're trying to scare us in this uber liberal college town. I'm not in charge, so I'm not directly in the loop of whats going on.

Can anyone suggest any resources I can find online as far as the legality of a show that involves stripping, but no nudity? It would be great to have some firm knowledge to back us up should they try to pull something.

Thanks!!

**Just got word that it was resolved! Our people knew the law better than they did and apparently they were nice about it, too. : )

My understanding of the general rule in New York City is that you have to wear pasties and g-strings in an establishment that serves alcohol, but in a regular theater space you can be fully nude. I wouldn't think there should be a problem, but decency laws vary a lot even from town to town.

Call other burlesque people in NY, maybe post in a burlesque community. This is BS. I'm certain, at one time, that at least one of those cops have been in a strip club.

Being top free is completely legal in New York state outside, but I believe that shirts and shoes must be on in most places that sell food/drinks. This whole top free business is so cool to me bc one of my partner's friends', (who is probably reading this which makes it totally dorky), parents were the people who made it legal to be top free. And when I was younger I was totally enamored by this court case and now I'm like...friends with this kid. Which makes him my touch with celebrity, in my head. hahaha.

Hope your show is fun tonight!
