Current mood: angry

Male politician notices that rape happens; world stops to stare at this amazing new discovery
Background for the non-UK people: David Cameron is the leader of the Conservatives, who are a) the largest party not in power and b) the most right-wing mainstream party. On to the rage.

Recently, he decided that conviction rates were too low, victims were treated like criminals and support centres should be given more funding. Took yer sweet time about it, boy. He then went on to claim it was all about too much sexiness,* as opposed to violence and power.

Feminists spend years saying that the conviction rate for rape is too low, that there isn't enough support given to victims.

Response: shut up, hairylegged manhating dykes. You know women lie about these things. She probably asked for it.

A right-wing male politician raises the subject and decides it's all to do with too much consensual sex.

Response: suddenly it's newsworthy. Everybody pay attention. The news on the TV on the train even referred to it as a "new issue".

I'm really very angry about this.

* To clarify: when right-wing politicians start talking about cultural change, moral collapse and sexualisation, I start panicking, because next we're on to "traditional family values" (whose tradition? Whose family?). Sexual violence is, fundamentally, violence. Saying it's all about sex isn't so far from saying women in short skirts are asking for it.

Sometimes it seems they will always think rape is sex. I don't know why it is so fucking difficult to see that yes, rape affects people sexually, and is somewhat sexual in nature; but that does not make it sex. I became a survivor at 15 and remember having to explain this to people long before I read anyone bothering to say it in the media - or saying it to me, for that matter.

The way the media operates regarding rape is always sickening. About a year after I was raped, suddenly a bunch of statistics showed up about how common rape is on college campuses. There were headlines and special news reports and all sorts of "in-depth" discussions in the mass media about Date Rape (they always called it that).

I have the... distinction of having been raped by a stranger. But because all my friends who'd survived sexual abuse and assault were not, and because all the assumptions about what I went through were upsetting and heartwringing, I was glad for the public awareness. Then of course, it all went away.

Later, in the States' "new" atmosphere of conservatism, we backslid severely. Now we're back to the shit I first heard when I was freshly raped, at 15. I'm fucking 33. You'd think we'd have made some progress, and during the Clinton years, we did; to be fair, I'm in a very liberal town, and my friends and acquaintances have mostly retained what we learned. Even with my peers though, the bullshit creeps in. Again they will tend to question whether someone really couldn't get out of a situation. They'll say they question because women are strong and people who "act" victimized without cause are undermining the experience of "real" victims; but that's shit. On some levels they're a bunch of fucking Pavlov dogs.

How difficult is it to realize that if "she could have gotten out of the situation," HE COULD HAVE STOPPED RAPING HER?

I hate people.

Exactly how I've been feeling today, good to know I'm not alone - I had a bit of a rant about this and a friend told me I should just be glad that it was being talked about. GRRRRRR. Also one report I read - maybe the bbc? Can't remember - quoted the director of the Fawcett Society saying that conviction levels were disgracefully low, but right at the end of the piece and phrased as if she'd listened to Cameron's speech and thought 'You know, that man has a point!' rather than having spent years campaigning on the issue.
