Should I go see it? Will it offend me? Is the nude scene vital to the plot or just gratuitous? Are the female characters the same old sexist stereotypes or something more?
Have you ever struggled with these questions? Most feminists have.
Welcome to Feminists' Movie Reviews, the place for feminists to post film reviews. Our goal is to provide reviews based on feminist criteria, so women have a handy reference and can decide for themselves what movies they feel comfortable seeing.
Let's face it, Roger Ebert's reviews rarely help.
All feminists are allowed to join the community and post reviews, but we require they use the GRAVUS rating system.
G - Gratuitous objectification of women. Given to films that objectify women with the camera gaze, through costuming, and so on.
R - Racism. Given to films with racist elements.
A - Ageism (for example, is the middle-age man hooking up with the 19-year-old again?).
V - Violence against women. Given to films that show any violence towards women (rape, assault, etc.)
U - Underrepresentation. Given to films with more roles for men than women.
S - Stereotypes. Given to films where women play stereotypical roles (for example, the wife, the girlfriend, the prostitute).
After you have rated the film (and given specific reasons for each rating you gave) you may post any "other" information about the film. This could include the summary, how great an action movie it was (despite not being feminist), that a woman directed the film, and so on.
Each post MUST BE A MOVIE REVIEW. Any and all discussion of that movie must be done in the comments section. You must be a member of the community to comment.
Movies can have more than one review -- just make a new entry. We will have a website indexing all the films up shortly.
All plot spoilers must be put behind cut tags. In general, try not to use spoilers.
This is a feminist community about women and female-identified folk. We believe men and male-identified folk can be allies to the feminist cause, but shouldn't be judging (i.e. rating) what feminist criterion is. If you truly are a pro-feminist man, you'll recognize that this is one area where you should step aside. Men can join as members and comment on the reviews, we just ask that you don't write the reviews yourselves.
Each post will be monitored to ensure proper format. This community is monitored by Cilissae. If you have any problems with it, please email her directly at cilissae@livejournal.com.
