What does pretty have to do with it?
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

This shirt is sold here. The company that sells it is Alloy and they specialize in clothing for females in their teens/twenties.

Am I being completely hypersensitive or is this just ignorant and offensive? Maybe I'm taking it too personally because of my own learning disabilities, but this shirt really irritates me. It's funny in a sarcastic context, but then again, I don't think this company means for it to be sarcastic because they're stupid like that.

EDIT: Emails can be sent to comments@alloymail.com.

Why not, instead of sending an email, create a your own fashionable wear featuring positive messages you want to communicate to others? You'd be doing far more by doing that than engaging in a useless argument that only sucks up time. And from experience, arguing never changes peoples' opinions.

As if I didn't hate Alloy enough for firing my dad and making him train his sucessor at the NYC office.

I can't believe people still think printing this kind of shit on a shirt is acceptable. It goes back to the "math class is hard!" Barbie in '92, it's simply absurd. That message is bad news on many levels.

ps - Alloy is owned by a parent company called 365 Youth and they own a lot of teen-oriented catalogues and stores including Delias and CSS Skating stuff. Just in case anyone wants to avoid supporting that piece of crap corporation.

I think another clothing store has put out t shirts with the same slogan. I love mathematics and it's fun and interesting and looks have nothing to do with it! I do not want to see little girls grow up and believe math is for the "ugly nerdy" bunch. Because with this shirt, thats the message they're putting out and it is extremely disgusting and discouraging.

oh no, i absolutely do not think you are wrong in feeling furiously offended - that is offensive! it is implying that looking good (which is decided - socially - by heterosexual white men) means a girl doesn't have to have any intelligence or practical skills. this is infuriating!
does anyone know of any petitions or any sort of activism surrounding this? these shirts should not be marketed and sold. to anyone. period.

I don't think heterosexual white men get together as a committee and say, "Gee, this is what is going to be fashionable next season." Also remember that the people who are most likely to buy this shirt are women. Got a problem with their views? Take it up with them.

Oh, and those shirts should be marketed and sold if only because everybody should have the opportunity to live in a society where a free market exists. Disagree with the message on the shirt? Create your own parody of it that mocks how stupid it is.

No this is extremely offensive. I grew up in a household where my mother constantly told me that she was bad at math and my father always told me he was bad in the language arts and that it was just gender that caused these. This became my excuse in highschool, college... when in all actuality the difference is really only 1%.

Sense then I've realised that I was better in math than I gave myself credit for..

While it does purport a negative stereotype, I do believe that people should have the right to wear or sell what they want.

It's the gender-stereotype argument - yes, gender-stereotyping is bad, but some people are that "stereotype", and should be allowed to be so just as much as others should be allowed to break it.

[info]naath

No-one 'is' that steryotype. Yes, some people are both pretty and stupid but there is no causal relation - prettiness does not 'cause' stupidity. Perhaps it should say 'I am too thick to do well in school so I spend all my time learning how to be pretty instead' or maybe 'Socitey has conditioned me to think that I am thick and should thus spend all my time sitting arround looking decorative'. The way it is written implies that attractiveness in some way causes stupidity. Which is daft.

as a pretty girl who deals a lot with intelectual stuff I often fell myself oppresed by men trying to say me a compliment in intelectual discussion - they usually say something like:
'as such young and pretty lady just say...' - I immediately want to kill them becouse I don't realize why my beauty should be an object of attention in intelectual professional discussion - is my face has something to my mind??

It's funny in a sarcastic context, but then again, I don't think this company means for it to be sarcastic because they're stupid like that.

If it's not intended to be sarcastic, then what do you think is Alloy's idea behind this? That there is an actual scientific corelation between beauty and poor math skills in women, and that the public needs to know about this? That many women genuinely feel they are too pretty to do math, and would like to make this known to the world? Somehow, neither of these strike me as very realistic.
