Math class.
I was in math class and a girl came i, and this boy who is rather "big", sits down to talk to her. He then says to her,"Your make-up is coming off". He said it with a rather rude intention. As soon as he said it, the entire class looked over to her face,to see if it was true. I didn't thoug, because I was trying to figure out exactly what I just heard. Am I the only one who thinks what he said was offensive?

It was certainly offensive, but why do you have to mention that he was "big"? One kind of oppression does not excuse another.

[info]pixienat seems to think it's fun to joke about eating disorders, mock famous people who are recovering from them, and recommend aids for fat kids.

She's also racist as seen here and uses "cunt" as an insult as in here. She also lists her birth year as 1899 (?) but talks of starting high school this past fall. Hmmmm...

Her other posts here havent been so offensive, but they have still bothered me. She never responds to any challenges on her posts which make her even more irritating.

i don't think what the guy said was offensive. who cares if her makeup is coming off? it must have been annoying/embarrassing for the whole class to look over at her, though.

on the other hand, i think your icon is very offensive. c'mon, that's just mean.

I agree... personally if my eyeliner was running or my lipstick was smudged badly (I don't wear makeup, but if I did) I'd want to know. Instead of...you know...walking around looking like a clown.

And the icon = NOT cool. Also, what does his size have to do with anything?

not offencive, but kind of rude. since it was a loud voice, and generally people don't like their appearence nitpicked for all to hear.

I don't wear make up but if I did and it was smudged I'd want to know. How did the girl react? Was she offended or did she pull out a mirror and fix it? You might be overreacting.

(Reply to this)

I agree
[info]goddessdragon
2005-01-24 12:05 pm UTC (link)
Actually, I agree. If the boy said it loudly, with the intent to attract attention, then its rude. He could have whispered it, said it soft, just so the girl could hear. He didn't. If the class turned to look at the girl, then he did it to be rude, and place unneccessary attention on the girl.

Oh, and I took "big" to mean popular.

Well, we can't exactly judge "with a rather rude intention" here.

Saying "your makeup is coming off" is not the sort of thing I'd consider rude per se; it's more the equivalent of "your fly's open" or "you've got something between your teeth." If the guy's saying it loudly enough for the whole class to hear, that's a bit rude.

Regardless, I don't see how it's an issue that involves feminism.

I say its an issue that involves feminism because a woman would never tell a man loudly, for a class to hear, that his fly was open. Sure, a few people on this community would, but in general, women are sensitive to other's needs. We're discreet, and polite.

Misogyny is a subtle art. As feminists we look to change the world around us. There are big battles (reproductive rights, equal pay) and then there are littler day by day battles (a waitress who is called "honey," or "sugar," giving girls equal time in the classroom). Pixienat has only given an example of the day by day inequality. Small changes feed bigger changes.

If you're saying women are intrinsically discreet and polite and passive, how can you get upset by inequalities, since having traits like those ascribed to one sex are a one way trip to the land of gender division?

Sorry, I don't buy that (seen it happen enough times, for one thing).

Some people are rude, others aren't, and while it may be true that (a) women face more social pressure to be inoffensive, and that (b) in a high school setting, makeup is almost exclusively worn by women, I still disagree that (absent some other aspect of the situation which was not revealed to us) pointing this out constitutes misogyny rather than "merely" general rudeness.
