11/1/09 12:30 am - [info]vermin_disciple - Mater Familias, Antonia, PG-13

Title: Mater Familias
Author: [info]vermin_disciple
Fandom: I, Claudius (leaning more towards mini-series-verse than book-verse)
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Canon character death
Word count: 2,800
Prompt: 102) I woke in bits, like all children, piecemeal over the years. I discovered myself and the world, and forgot them, and discovered them again. -- Annie Dillard. This fit incredibly well with the original story I was writing, but that, unfortunately, crashed and burned. For this one I really didn't use it at all.
Summary: Antonia executes her daughter, and tries to live with her disappointing son.
Author's Notes: I've been threatening to write I, Claudius fic for years, due to my slightly scary love for the book, the mini-series and Roman history in general. This was a lovely excuse to finally post some. The first few lines of dialogue have been stolen directly from Episode 8: Reign of Terror, just after the fall of Sejanus. Many thanks to [info]dbassassin for beta-reading, and to [info]gehayi for running this thing so well every year. Many apologies for my incredible and inexcusable lateness.

How long are you going to leave her in there? )

Summary: Parvati's Boggart is unexpected. Set in the summer between GoF and OotP and in the first week of OotP. Patil twins. 1485 words.
Author's Notes: Thanks to [info]fpb, [info]ignipes and [info]winding_path for beta-reading and also to [info]gehayi for an extension.

Title: The Things We Thought That We Should Do
Author: [info]wendelah1
Fandom: The X-Files
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: A couple of swear words and a questionable sense of morality
Prompt: 54) There is small disproportion betwixt a fool who useth not wit because he hath it not and him that useth it not when it should avail him. -- Elizabeth I of England (1533-1603), queen of England.
Summary: Diana Fowley contemplates her past as an F.B.I. Agent, and a member of the Syndicate, her present life as a fugitive, and her future as a woman living with breast cancer. This is an alternative universe in which, among other things, Diana does not die at the end of Amor Fati.
Author's Notes: My thanks to [info]hummingfly67 for her awesome last minute beta services, to our moderator, [info]gehayi, for her understanding in allowing me to post this late, and to [info]idella for her friendship, her insightful feedback, and for loving to read stories about Diana.

10/16/09 05:58 am - [info]gehayi - Master List for FemGen 2009

Please note that there WILL be stories added to this--some people who have amnesty are going to be posting when they can, and some people will just be posting late. If this is your first year with FemGen (and therefore don't know this), posting late is not something I'm going to penalize anyone for, whether they have amnesty or not. When your story is done, post it and I'll add it to the memories and master list.

That said, here are all the stories that have been posted so far--LJ-cut to save FemGen's friends-list, of course.

Title: Ascend the Brightest Heaven of Invention
Author: [info]scrollgirl
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis/Stargate SG-1
Characters: Jeannie McKay, Carolyn Lam, John Sheppard, Rodney McKay, Elizabeth Weir, Jack O'Neill, Catherine Langford
Rating: PG-13 for one swear word
Words: 8200

Summary: In 2005, Jeannie McKay prepares for the trip of a lifetime: a possibly one-way ticket to the Pegasus galaxy in search of the lost city of the Ancients. Stargate AU in which Jeannie, not Rodney, as well Sam Carter, Carolyn Lam, and many more female scientists are part of the original Atlantis expedition in "Rising".

Summary: Charn is gone; nostalgia is useless. Jadis has new worlds to conquer, if she can only find the way.
Author's Notes: This is, about three times over, not the story I meant to write, though it is still about Jadis and her sister (after a fashion). Someday I will get those other stories finished as well. Thanks to [info]willowgreen for her speedy and insightful beta-reading!

10/15/09 09:22 pm - [info]opheliet - One Step at a Time, Pam Beesly, PG-13

Title: One Step at a Time
Author: [info]opheliet
Fandom: The Office (US)
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Very light swearing, some feelings/expressions of depression.
Prompt: 80) You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience by which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' -- Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962), First Lady of the United States (1933-1945), advocate for civil rights, author, columnist, lecturer and delegate to the UN General Assembly (1945-1952).
Summary: Just one of the journeys of Pam Beesly, in lists.
Author's Notes: I always grit my teeth whenever I hear people talk about Pam not really being a strong female character, so what better place to combat that than this fest? So this is the result of exploring her character without all those silly boys in the way :P There aren't any spoilers for the current season (6) in here. Set during S3, so obviously spoilers for that. Feedback is enormously appreciated. Many thanks to [info]tearlit who brainstormed with me online during her grad school class, and gave me so many great ideas. I've got about five more plot bunnies hopping around from that.
Also many thanks to [info]gehayi , who extended this wonderful fest for us, and who puts up with a lot. I know I look forward to this fest every year, and though it's been a hard year, and I'm still trying to figure out where my muse disappeared to, I hope you all enjoy this.

Summary: Creating a new life after you've led a slave revolt and won your freedom is hard, especially if you have to do it alone.
Author's Notes: ~1700 words; rating is overly cautious

10/16/09 02:29 am - [info]snorkackcatcher - Starting Over - Sarah Jane Adventures, Maria Jackson, PG-13

Title: Starting Over
Author: [info]snorkackcatcher
Fandom: The Sarah Jane Adventures (with Classic and New Doctor Who references)
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~5100
Prompt: #61 Invest in the human soul. Who knows, it might be a diamond in the rough. -- Mary McLeod Bethune (1875-1955), American educator and civil rights activist; founder, in 1904, of a school for black girls which eventually became Bethune-Cookman University, a black university in Daytona Beach, Florida; and advisor to Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Vaguely used in the development of one character, but not the main theme.
Summary: Moving to America was supposed to be the end of Maria's alien- investigating activities. It was hard for her to forget them though. And sometimes it seems as if the universe so arranges itself that things just happen to some people ...
Author's Notes: Apologies for the last-minute nature of this! Light-hearted, but hopefully canon-compatible (and I note with relief that nothing in the first episode of the new series today actually contradicted it). In the SJA canon timeline, takes place shortly after Mark of the Berserker.

Sarah Jane had a theory that things simply happen to some people )

Summary: Augusta Longbottom waits outside the Casualty ward at St. Mungo’s and thinks about her relationship with her daughter-in-law.

Author’s Note:  The concept of graveside is used rather broadly here. Thank you for giving me extended time to write this story. I’ve enjoyed this ficathon. I wish circumstances had allowed me to devote more time to it.  Thank you for the beta [info]rugi.  ETA: I found no less than three errors after posting. Two were missed  even after my beta pointed them out.  I have repaired them.  Sorry.

Title: Listening to Silence
Author: [info]memories_child
Fandom: The X Files
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Character death.
Prompt: #13 – The truth about your own life is not always easy to accept, and sometimes hasn’t even occurred to you. – Anna Quindlen (born July 6, 1952). American author, journalist and columnist for the New York Times.
Summary: Scully reflects on her life and the choices she has made, and finally accepts the truth that is never easy to accept.
Author's Notes: This is the fifth time I’ve started something for this ficathon; the fifth story that I’ve tried to tell about these characters and this fandom with this prompt. The quote is so appropriate for almost every X Files character and I’ve written about Samantha, Scully, Teena and Diana. But this story was the one that most wanted to be told, so it’s the one that I’ve gone with. I hope that it’s ok. Thanks to [info]hankmoodyblues for the beta. Author's Notes: Beta'ed by [info]blue_cage in record time. Thank you to [info]gehayi for holding this fest. Author's Notes: I really struggled with this, for various reasons, including having almost no time. But the prompt spoke to me, and I could not resist writing this. It was impossible to find a beta on LJ at such short notice, so many thanks to my friend "L" for proof-reading this for me.

Author's Notes: Spoilers for season three of new Doctor Who. (I haven't watched series four yet.) Lines in bold italics are quotes from Ten (and John Smith) throughout series three. Thanks to [info]daybreak777, [info]millari and [info]persiflage_1 for all kinds of help.

I will not resign myself to the usual lot of women who bow their heads and become concubines. -- Trieu Thi Trinh (225-248), 3rd-century Vietnamese revolutionary who led a rebellion against Chinese invaders. Known as "the Vietnamese Joan of Arc."
Summary: The last cosmetics vendor in the universe has turned up dead. Ellen Tigh needs to figure out who killed her, before she's accused of the crime herself.

Title: Silence Beyond Words
Author: [info]tree_and_leaf
Fandom: Star Trek (AOS)
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: No
Prompt: 12. Could I write all, the world would turn to stone. -- Caterina Sforza (early 1463-1509), Italian warrior-ruler of Imola and Forli.
Summary: Nyota Uhura is a communications officer, which means she’s good with words. So why can’t she find the right words to talk about what’s happened?
Author's Notes: Capt. Robbins isn’t really an OFC; it’s one of the names used in some of the spin-off material for Number One (while I normally have a great deal of respect for DC Fontana, I hate the idea that Number One really is her name; and wouldn’t that get confusing once you get promoted past XO anyway?) At any rate, Number One is awesome, despite how little we see of her in canon.
I have taken the prompt rather loosely; I wanted to write about things that can and can't be said. Alas, I struggled with it a bit, and I'm not entirely satisfied with the results. I hope you enjoy it nonetheless.

I do not own Star Trek, in any of its forms, nor am I making any profits.

Robbins bought her whisky, the Scottish kind, with a reek of smoke on the nose. Uhura winced, and thought of burning circuits. )

Summary: They're the same age, but they couldn't have grown up to be more different. One day, they'll save the world together anyway.
Author Notes: Second story done for my prompt, yes! Done for [info]femgenficathon. Prompt used. I don't own Lunar or any of the characters from Lunar. Thanks to the awesome [info]rushin_doll for the beta!

Title: As brittle as the glory is the face
Author: [info]lareinenoire
Fandom: Gossip Girl
Characters: Blair Waldorf, Vanessa Abrams, Jenny Humphrey, Serena van der Woodsen
Rating: PG
Warnings: Footnotes, excessive quotation, and dodgy interpretations of Shakespeare, monarchical theory, and identity politics.
Prompt: 3) Silly things do cease to be silly if they are done by sensible people in an impudent way. -- Jane Austen (1775-1817), English novelist.
Summary: "I am Richard II, know ye not that?" Where better for a dethroned queen to gain some perspective than from a dethroned king?
Author's Notes: I had more trouble than I would have anticipated in coming up with a response to this prompt, and the fic may well reflect that, so my apologies in advance. Michael Boyd's production of Richard II for the Royal Shakespeare Company sadly never made it to the United States, but the fic presupposes a short run in New York. Takes place during 2x25 The Goodbye Gossip Girl; spoilers up to that point. Title comes from Richard II, IV.i.288. Many thanks to my beta-readers [info]angevin2 and [info]rosamund.

Spotted: Blair Waldorf taking in some Shakespeare. Where better for a dethroned queen to gain some perspective than from a dethroned king? )

Title: This Is Not A War Story

Prompt: 142. The facts are always less than what really happened. -- Nadine Gordimer (born November 1923), South African author, anti-apartheid and anti-censorship activist, and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature (1991).
Summary: This is not a story of death or killing or blood or horror. These things happened, and they happened in a fight that was called a war, but they don't come together to make a war story. At least, not the way Luna Lovegood tells it.
Author's Notes: Many thanks to [info]slam_girl for helping me with this fic. She is, as always, a most excellent friend. Along with my given prompt, I was influenced by Tim O'Brien's wonderful book The Things They Carried so with that in mind I'd like to dedicate my story to all the women soldier out there, who do not, I fear, always get the respect they deserve.

Title: Majesty

Author: Kelly Chambliss [info]kellychambliss

Fandom: Harry Potter

Rating: PG

Characters: Minerva McGonagall, HRH

Word Count: 6000

Prompt: #60 -- Courage is the price that life exacts for granting peace. The soul that knows it not, knows no release from little things; knows not the livid loneliness of fear.    --Amelia Earhart (July 24, 1897 -- missing July 2, 1937, declared dead January 5, 1939), American pilot and author; first woman pilot to fly across the Atlantic Ocean; first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Summary: Once upon a time, there was a great queen and a powerful witch. . .

Author's Notes: I've interpreted the prompt very liberally. Courage is here, definitely, along with a bit of fear (since there can be no courage without it). And I think you'll find loneliness as well (though not connected to fear, I don't think). Peace? I believe so, but you may decide for yourself.  // There are several shifts in point of view; I hope they aren't too confusing.  My thanks to my excellent beta readers, [info]therealsnape  and  [info]mountainmoira

Title: In The Dark
Author: [info]slowmercury

Warnings: None, really, but it might spoil chapter 62
Prompt: 17) I thought how unpleasant it is to be locked out; and I thought how it is worse, perhaps, to be locked in. -- Virginia Woolf (1882-1941), English novelist and essayist.
Summary: Aoi Hyuuga spent two years in a basement, blind and with amnesia, and when she finally gets out she is angry.
Author's Notes: I really didn't think the way that Aoi was treated was fair - she suffers a lot over the course of the story and no one seems to care, aside from how it affects her heroic brother, and that just seemed... cheap. This story may make more sense if you read the background blurb.

10/11/09 10:20 pm - [info]anna_bird - Those Who Favor Fire (3/3) Stargate: Atlantis, Teyla Emmagen, Jennifer Keller, PG-13

Title: Those Who Favor Fire
Author: [info]anna_bird
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Some violence and swearing.
Prompt: No. 79: Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. -- Helen Keller (1880-1968), deaf-blind American author, lecturer and political activist. She campaigned for women's suffrage, pacifism, people with disabilities, the Industrial Workers of the World (the IWW, or the "Wobblies"), socialism and birth control, and helped found the ACLU.
Summary: AU, after Enemy at the Gate (series finale). The City of Atlantis and inhabitants have returned to Pegasus from their heroic rescue of the planet Earth at the hands of the Wraith. But something is wrong.
Author's Notes: Roughly 17,000 words and posted in three parts! I strayed quite a bit from the original prompt, but I do think it serves as a good quote about the character of Teyla and her people in general. Boatloads of thanks to the best betas money cannot buy, [info]sasha_feather, [info]were_duck for their time and insightful comments/criticisms, and especially [info]taste_is_sweet for her big damn overhaul, helpful comments and a better, much more interesting title (which comes from this poem). Thank you, ladies. I really appreciate it. Any inconsistencies or errors are mine alone.

10/8/09 04:57 am - [info]gehayi - Deadline Approaching

Okay, people. Just to remind those of you who DON'T have amnesty to post whenever it's possible (and there are several such people, thanks to chronic illness and missing computers, because 2009 has been a truly horrible year):

The deadline for [info]femgenficathon is October 15, 11:59 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.

You have a week to go.

There will be no more extensions.

While I won't bar anyone from future participation if the story is posted late or the person defaults, I would strongly prefer that the stories be posted by the deadline.

Also, next year, the ficathon will be much shorter. I listened to you guys this year about keeping the deadline in October, and that has been a failure. Evidently handing out prompts in April and having a deadline in October does not work; it gives people too long to forget about Femgen and to become distracted by other obligations, both connected with ficathons and with real life.

So next year, Femgen prompts will be handed out starting on May 15 and ending on May 22. There will be seventy-five prompts--no more, no less. The most stories we've ever had people post in one year is seventy-four, and all other years have produced appreciably fewer stories, so seventy-five prompts should be more than sufficient. The deadline will be July 31, as it was during Femgen's first year. I think that's time enough.

Title: A Choice of Life and Love
Autor: [info]catsintheattic
Fandom: Harry Potter
Rating: Hard R
Warnings: torture, original character death
Prompt: Promp no. 35: It had only been my repeated experience that when you said to life calmly and firmly...'I trust you; do what you must,' life had an uncanny way of responding to your need. Olga Ilyin (1894-1991), Russian emigré author of memoirs.
Summary: Sometimes, a woman has to decide whether to follow the path of love or to set out to fulfil her life-task. Few, like Bellatrix Black, manage to achieve both. Whatever they do, the path is never easy, until the last shred of doubt is finally burned away.
Word count: 6,242
Author’s notes: Just like last year, I managed to turn a lovely, positive prompt into something dark and twisted. Do I see a pattern emerging? Is it the number 35 that makes me do it? ;-)
Bella’s vow during her Marking was inspired by the Lord’s Prayer – I mean no offense, but I want to be clear about my sources. I really struggled with Bella’s story and had a hard time of getting under her skin or into her mind. So I thank [info]celta_diabolica and [info]paragraphs not just for their beta-reading and the POV guiding, I also thank them for their support and encouragement, for their questions and impressions, and for helping me to find my way through Bella’s night.

Title: The Right Path Might Be the One Previously Travelled
Author: [info]idea_of_sarcasm
Fandom: Star Trek (2009)
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Implied death of a non-canon character
Prompt: It's not bad to say: My work is not what I really want, I'm capable of doing something bigger. Or I'm a person who needs love, and I'm doing without it. What's terrible is to pretend that the second-rate is the first-rate. To pretend that you don't need love when you do; or you like your work when you know quite well you're capable of better. -- Doris Lessing (born October 22, 1919), Nobel-prize-winning Zimbabwean-British author. She is the oldest person to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. She has been given the Order of the Companions of Honour (established for outstanding achievements in the arts, literature, music, science, politics, industry or religion) and the Order of the British Empire.
Summary: It's not that Christine doesn't like her life, it's not that it's not a worthy one, but in little flashes she is coming to realize that it's not for her
Author's Notes: Star Trek fic scares me; that being said, this idea bit me and wouldn't let go. There are a few small nods to TOS canon.

Prompt: 50) I have begun to feel/ That it is dreams, not reality,/On which I can rely. -- Ono no Komachi(c. 825 — c. 900), 9th-century Japanese poet.
Summary: Perhaps it was one the great ironies of Montalais' life; she was never weak enough to be powerful. Still, one last try.
Author's Notes: Aside from the prompt, all quotes belong to Dumas. Also, props to my hubby for the editing job; it's HARD to find a beta in this fandom!

Title: Lion-Headed Goddess with Bandages in Her Mouth
Author: Katt ([info]xenokattz)
Rating: Teen (strong language)
Fandom: DCU (aka comic!verse)
Characters: Lois Lane
Summary: I'm Lois Lane. I'm the best investigative reporter living.
Prompt #81: When "mad," at least in literature, you aren't yourself; you take on another self, a self that is either not you at all, or a truer, more elemental one than the person you're used to seeing in the mirror. You're in danger of becoming, in Shakespeare's works, a mere picture or beast, and in Susanna Moodie's words, a mere machine; or else you may become an inspired prophet, a truth-sayer, a shaman, one who oversteps the boundaries of the ordinarily visible and audible, and also, and especially, the ordinarily sayable. -- Margaret Atwood

Disclaimer: All recognizable characters are not mine. Lois Lane belongs to DCU and created by Jerry Seigel and Joe Shuster. She is the original badass. The title is from Margaret Atwood's poem, "Sekhmet, the Lion-headed Goddess of War". She's one of my favourite poets if not THE favourite.
