Thank You
I just found out this morning that my 14 year old kitty, Wilson, has diabetes. I still have to bring in a urine sample so the doctor can confirm it and then she will have me go through diabetes 101. We just lost his brother (they were from the same litter) a few months back, so needless to say I am really freaked out. I don't know what to do or what to expect yet and having this community and felinediabetes.com has already helped a lot.

Not to worry, FD is treatable and I know you can do it. The best thing you can do is to educate yourself. The more knowledge you have the better prepared you'll be. And if I may I strongly recommend home testing. It is an invaluable tool for treating diabetes. Wait until your vet confirms and then gives you the 101 and a treatment plan and if you have questions please do feel free to ask. Deep breaths :)

Thanks so much for your help and support. I have been reading everything I can find on feline diabetes and I must say it is a little bit overwhelming. The vet just called to confirm it. She is going to have me come in Friday and teach me how to do the insulin injections. She said that she has not had great experiences with home testing & that it tends to make the cat mad at the owner, but if I want to learn she is happy to teach me.I've cared for a diabetic person before and it sounds like it is not too too different with cats. I am a bit worried about not doing home testing just in case I give him an injection when his blood sugar is low. The good news is we caught it really early, so he doesn't have any kidney damage or any other complications. He has been really really good and is coming with me to the vet's office for my diabetes 101 class on Friday.

you're welcome :) Don't let it overwhelm you, it'll be like 2nd nature before you know it. I personally recommend the home testing. It saved my kitty's life more than once and no, it's not so different than human testing. Just that it's done on the ear rather than a finger. ;) Jing would actually come running to me when I brought out his meter and many cats do, so I must say that there are more positive experiences than negative ones. If you make it a positive experience, your kitty won't mind. I just posted a link to Gorbzilla's hometesting primer to another member if you want to read up on it..

That's great that you caught it early. Good luck with your shot lessons and let us know how it goes..
