Dude in Des Moines got all his cows waterbeds and a flatscreen TV. He says it makes them happy, and they like to watch Oprah and Dr. Phil. Famous cowologist Temple Grandin oversaw a study done by the University of Colorado that discovered that cows like waterbeds, but also think sand is just fine. Cows with waterbeds produce 6% more milk. Cows with mirrors over their waterbeds produce 10% more.

A giant tarantula is running around somewhere in the UK. No, not the cute tiny Chilean one, but an 8-inch, 8-eyed monster called the Goliath bird-eating spider from an unidentified part of South America. NOTE: someone in the story is identified as a "piping designer." Also, tarantula's size is compared to a dinner plate.

Chaotic ants have taken over a Texas town. No, not aunt. Real ants, little things, billions of them running around IN NO DISCERNABLE PATTERN. These ants, called crazy Raspberry ants, will eat lady bugs, computers, and BABY BIRDS. I am not kidding, guys. And you know who is gonna get blamed for that. QATS. I wonder how tasty the crazy ants are? These crazy ants are the same ones you guys in the south east US and Caribbean have, so maybe some of you have had some. TELL US!

A tiny Chilean tarantula was found cavorting amongst the grapes of his homeland in Suffolk as a father was just about to hand the bunch to his four-year-old son. Quick thinking dad captured the tarantula, whose name is Antonio Alberto Diaz-Apodaca, and scooted him off to the vet. He is now at a pet shop, where he is resting comfortably. "It's just a small Chilean Tarantula with a lovely black abdomen and pink zebra markings on the back," Colin White, of Abbey Aquatics and Reptiles, said.

Hello, everyone! I am a new member of this community. Beginning next week I will be starting a blog that will focus on the life of a pregnant cat that I am fostering for an animal shelter. I'll be documenting her treatment (her owner chose not to give her any kind of vet care prior to dumping her) and the birth of her kittens. We are hoping that the entire litter will survive. "Momma" needs a name, which I may allow blogger readers to choose. Her kittens will be named after celebrity/animal rights activists. More information, and pictures of my own two cats, under the cut.

Science guys is giving an bird a bionic beak! The bald eagle, named Beauty (I know, terrible name. Might as well name her Eagly) got part of her beak shot off several years ago by an unnamed assailant, rendering the beak useless for catching prey. A team in Idaho has been working on the beak for two years, while Beauty has been cooling her heals, getting hand-fed salmon and spa treatments. Next month, attachment will be done and the hand feeding will stop.

Hey, if they're making beaks for eagles, how about claws for cats what been declawpitated? SOME DAY IT WILL HAPPEN.

Check it. A man goes to put some brake fluid in his truck. He opens the hood, and what does he find? The growling head of a pitbull. Since it was growling, he figured it was still alive. The rest of the body was trying to make its way up and out of the car. For some reason, the guy was scared! Imagine how the pit felt? No one knows how or why, but the pit started chewing its way through the truck's electronics from underneath. Police came to get the pit out, and the dog is fine. Truck, however, is toast.

In the wake of the tragic death of young filly Eight Belles at Saturday's Kentucky Derby, one New York City horse decided to voice his opinion on the whole "horses are the slaves of people" thing--he threw the cop that was riding him, and then made his way home alone to his stable eight blocks away. I know some of you are having a hard time parsing these sentences. Manhattan, cop on a horse, stable? You see, we only let the tourists see 11 miles of Manhattan. There are an additional 40 miles with farms, and horses and stables, flying cars, rainbows and unicorns. I'm not kidding! Aldo, the police horse, has been on the job for about a year. The officer, Martin Brown, suffered a few cuts.

A team of Filipino and American scientists have rediscovered a highly distinctive mammal -- a greater dwarf cloud rat -- that was last seen 112 years ago. Furthermore, it has never before been discovered in its natural habitat and was thought by some to be extinct.

The greater dwarf cloud rat (Carpomys melanurus) has dense, soft reddish-brown fur, a black mask around large dark eyes, small rounded ears, a broad and blunt snout, and a long tail covered with dark hair. An adult weighs about 185 grams.

Sommelier Henrey Lee Lucat recommends: Prepare this slightly spicy and earthy rodent sauteed with mushrooms, and serve with 2005 Australian Pinot Noir, or a 2007 New York State Pinot Noir.

A penguin who was sexually assaulted by a seal is shocked that science guys stood by taking photos during the forty-five minute assault. "I'd heard about experiments where humans watched and did nothing while crimes took place," said the flustered penguin, "but I didn't think those stories were real." Science guys say immature seals often sexually abuse penguins. Maybe a magazine would help? Can't we get those seals a copy of Zoo World or something?

Science guys discovered that starlings know when you are watching them, and do not liked to be watched while they eat. Who does? Starlings can also learn very quickly that those plastic owls are plastic. If I remember correctly, starlings are frequently mentioned in The Falls. Cats and squirrels! We need to befriend these birds!

A new shrew in Ireland!

It's very rare to find a new species of mammal in Ireland these days, but they found one! It's a shrew, a tiny shrew. No wonder no one ever seen it before! It probably lived with the fairies and such. The mammal, Crocidura Russula, has been discovered in parts of the midlands and south-west of the republic. Its natural range is in parts of Africa, France and Germany. Science guys suspect that a family immigrated from Africa, enticed by the tech boom in Belfast. Now there are hundreds of families, living in little cottages with straw roofs, who spend their evenings playing the fiddle and singing and jigging. They have assimilated quickly! Ireland's native pygmy shrews are afraid of losing their jobs to the new shrews. I would like to note that their "job" is being food for owls, so they should be pleased.

The giant inflatable pig, featured on Pink Floyd's Animals cover, that flew away from the Coachella festival last week, has landed. In tatters.

The festival organizers offered a $10,000 reward for the two-story inflatable pig belonging to ex-Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters.

Steve Stoltz found a big pile of shredded plastic in his La Quinta, California, driveway early on Monday morning when he went to get his newspaper.

"We didn't even know what it was then, but that's all I hear about now," his wife Susan Stoltz told Reuters.

"My sons who are in their 20s will think I'm pretty cool," said Susan.

Really, Susan??? They'll think you're cool because you found part of an inflatable pig that's older than they are? OK.

a PACK of 15 monkeys excaped from a private wildlife facility in Polk County, Florida. The monkeys are the "pets' of Lex Salisbury, the CEO of Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo. Why a CEO of a zoo needs pets is unexplained, as is why a zoo needs a CEO. The monkeys are Patas monkeys, who are the fastest primates. Officials have urged peoples NOT TO PANIC.

Science guys have ascertained the the giant squid's giant eye is larger than a dinner plate, making it officially the largest eye in the animal kingdom. No word yet on whether this honor bestows any special powers on the squid, or if it means it is hungrier than other animals too. My eyes are the same size as my supper bowl.

Bud, a three year old Maine coon cat is chillaxing after getting rescued from a drainage pipe. Dave Jones, the Roto-Rooter guy who rescued him said he was a "pretty big cat," even though he lost two pounds while stuck in the drain.
