Suppose when given the option of his brother having never existed, Alphonse Elric had said yes; causing an entirely new history to be written. Suppose then that the wish hadn't been complete, and Edward Elric had been held captive within the Gate during the years this world existed. Now the Gate wants to release Edward in order to finish breaking him, and the peaceful life Alphonse has built without his brother will be completely thrown into chaos.
