Fabulous Fat Girl Flea Market!!
We came, we saw, we shopped!!  I brought my daughter and a friend to the market today and we had a blast!  Helping out with the sorting was really fun last night - next year, I promise I will stay longer.  Much longer.

But we scored big time today - and we came home and did a little fashion show for each other.  Here are the results!

Can't wait until next year!!!!

Pre-Fat Girl Flea Finds
Whoo!!

Today I sorted from 4-7:30pm. So yay for first dibs.

I picked up:
-a hot pink tube top from old school H&M when they did plus
-a black, pink, and cream bustier from lane bryant
-a black t-shirt with a wonderful Buddah applique
-a white halter sundress with beautiful flower embroidery
-a fabulous white dress.....its difficult to explain, I'll post a pic later, maybe. Its from Love Your Peaches
-two t-shirts for my friend
-a olive green halter bikini top from Love Your Peaches

And all for the hysterically cheap price of $19........
Jeeze. Im going back tomorrow, I desperately need denim.

Did any other sorters find some great stuff?

Call for Volunteers
Hi Everyone!
Three cheers for the organizers who have secured a date and location! Whee! This year's flea will be at the Center on September 29 in NYC.

Now comes the time to mobilize and get everyone slated to help out on the day of and day before. I have volunteered to be the volunteer coordinator for the flea this year, so I am starting the coordinating here. Who among you will be willing and able to give time on the day of and day before? What time will you be able to give (how many hours and when, specifically?) What are your volunteering preferences? Listed below are the different jobs needing coverage (based on last year’s volunteering.) If you can think of anything I missed, let me know.

Also, what would be super helpful is if people would spread the word that we’re looking for volunteers. Repost this call in your livejournal or other blog; let all your friends know we need help; stand on your rooftops and shout about it! Anything you can do to maximize visibility would be awesome. If you know people I should specifically contact, if you could email me that information, I’d appreciate it. Similarly, if you know of an announcement venue I am missing, please let me know about that, too.

Jobs needing to be filled (and I will happily slide people right into their preferred slots as soon as I hear from them)
Pick-up and drop off help from now ‘til then

Friday sorting and setting up

Saturday:
Sort
set-up
Admission
Staffing various size tables (please let me know if you have a size preference for maximum shopping-while-volunteering)

Check-out
Ongoing sorting

Fat Girl Fleamarket Update
This is copied from a message sent to the New York City Fat Girl Fleamarket E-mail Group.

"We did not find another location to have the flea and so had decided to accept the September dates at the Center. Unfortunately, it turned out that those dates were on Yom Kippur. So we cannot do it then. I had been emailing the woman at the center (it turns out my emails were going to a spam blocker so she didnt see them) about other dates in September or October. Today she emailed that there are no available dates in the big room we want in either month except the ones on Yom Kippur. I told her we could not use those dates (since many of us are Jewish, and many of our customers are....).

I have asked her what would happen if we forget about Sunday - if that would open anything in September or October, and what about november/december and beyond.

I will let you all know what happens as soon as I hear.

So, we are still at the drawing board.

Thanks, Shira"

And as a reminder, this is the New York City Fat Girl Fleamarket.

Has anyone heard anything about 2007's Fat Girl Flea in NYC?

Hey funky fatshionistas! I've been wondering about peoples first fat liberation experiences. When did you come out as a fatshionista? Was there a person or specific group of people who were your fattie mentors? Was there something someone said? Did you attend a specific event or read something inspiring?

I had one magical weekend. This past July I signed up to take a Big Moves class in NYC the same weekend as the Fat Girl Flea Market. I was so afraid of walking into the dance class that I waited outside of the building for 10 minutes until I decided that I was just going to go for it, let loose and give in to my inner fabulous fattie. I finally walked in and was greeted by a studio full of fierce ass fat chicks lead by a confident fattie in sweatpants and a sports bra. I danced my ass off and had such a blast.

The next day on my way to the Fat Girl Flea Market the same anxieties ran through my head and I almost walked right past the venue because I was so afraid. I reminded myself how good it felt to be with those women the night before, so I sucked it up went right in and ended asking if they needed any extra volunteers. A beautiful fat chick in a shirt that read something funny like "Do I Look Fat in This?" or "Does This Shirt Make Me Look Fat?" lead me to a tiny room filled with piles, bags, and boxes of plus size clothing. I ended up staying the entire day in that room with amazing people sorting and trying on clothes, clothes that fit ME. I felt accepted and I felt beautiful and you know what? I felt HOT! I was in bliss. I will never forget the people in that tiny closet sized room that day. They were the first people to accept me into this amazing community of people.

This is a picture of me at the Flea Market that weekend. Fat arm wrinkles, overly excited double chin smile and all.

brunch outfit
I was so happy with my outfit from yesterday that I have to share. :)

My partner and I were invited to brunch at my friend's house. He implied that he wanted us to be our bohemian urbanite selves to impress his country bumpkin cousin. ::eyeroll:: i guess that's a way to be appreciated. he's very amused at what he perceives my "wild" lifestyle to be like. i think i'm rather boring and probably have a good deal in common with his very sweet cousin.

it was a green/black kind of day )

black/green sweater from hottopic - just bought this weekend. i always want to wear all my new clothes at once!
green capri fishnets - torrid (also new, and now sporting an open crotch, which is what i get for buying a size too small, but they were on 50% off sale, so there.)
black linen skirt - fat girl fleamarket!
black engineer boots - Fluevogs off of ebay
black cami - H+M in Berlin. The sweater is sheer. I like how the lace pops the top of the sweater.

2007 NYC Fat Girl Flea Market
hey folks.  as many of you know, for the past few years NYC has hosted the amazing Fat Girl Flea Market.  last year the event was 2 days long!  tons of amazing plus size treasures are found by flea goers for low, low prices and the atmosphere of the event is quite fun.  however, key organizers of the past are no longer able to take on the project in the way they used to and if we want to have the event this year, we need folks to step up and help out.  while help of any kind is needed, we especially need folks who are willing to take on key organizing roles.  without this, the event will not happen again.  please see the call for organizers below.  also, please forward and cross-post far and wide.  thanks!  xoxo, Zoe  ps: one of the benefits of being an organizer, beyond helping to create a fun-filled, fabulous, fat-positive shopping event and experience, meeting other fantastic fatties, and raising money for nolose, is that you get first dibs at the clothes!

Do you want a 2007 FAT GIRL FLEA?

If you do, then we need your help. Join in the fun, meet lots of great people, and get lots of great clothes. In order to make this year’s flea happen, we need at least 3 or 4 more people able to work on coordinating the event.

What is involved in this, you ask? Well, we as a group can decide together what’s involved. With several years of experience, we can follow along with how things were done OR we can do things differently. It will mean some meetings (which can be in person or conference calls or online chats). Beyond that, your involvement can take many forms.

What are some things you might work on?

Advertising and Outreach: Get us cards, sound out press releases and help get us publicity, help get people to poster and give out cards, and don’t forget the SECRET FAT GIRL NINJA WHEAT PASTING!!!

Volunteer Coordination: Get to know lots of great people while you help schedule people to help the day of and before the flea.

Clothing Pickup: Meet some of those great people donating clothes and help make sure the clothes get into storage and then to the flea.

And there’s lots more… What you do is up to you.

So if you want to see a flea this year, email Shira at shira623@verizon.net and lets start the fun!

Fatshionista Breakfasting
This morning I had another fun breakfast with fellow [info]fatshionista [info]opn where we wore Fat Girl Fleamarket finds, and took photos. We also discussed what to wear to a fat chick dancing event this Friday (I'm so excited, I got all ready for last Friday, one week early. oops).

With no further ado, photos! me, sparkle and red )

Breakfast Fat Girl Flea Style!
Today I had a fun breakfast with fellow [info]fatshionista the delightful [info]opn. We both wore Fat Girl Flea finds, and she brought her camera to document the glory.

pics behind the cut )

One side note about this outfit. What I wear to work is typically a solid color shirt (in summer a vee neck) with some kind of funky skirt/pants/capris. I realized that I almost never wear patterns on my top half (unless it's part of a dress) becuase I worry that it will make my breasts look too big and that woudl be unflattering. Now, as a HH cup I know intellectually that 1) my breasts are big and 2) there is really no hiding them.

In college I stopped wearign baggy dresses/tops because I realized I looked much better in clothes that were more close fittign (not tight, just not baggy) becuase then you can see my figure. Apparently, I have not yet dropped my crazy blinders about my bosom. My goal for fall/winter is to wear patterned tps and get over this weird issue of mine. I wanted to share my little fashion insight/goal.

Size Queen Skirt & Big Boxers of Brooklyn
At the always fabulous Fat Girl Flea, I snagged 2 wrap skirts from Size Queen and two boxers from Big Boxers of Brooklyn (both run by the same person).

The boxers were nice and comfy and properly roomy. I've been wearing them as PJs and for lounging around the house.

I fricking adore the wrap skirts. I love the big pocket and the contrast fabric under the flap. It's pratical and also adds a little bit of extra funkitude to the outfit.

Last week I had an awesome breakfast with fellow fatshionista [info]opn and she took pictures of my outfit. They're behind the cut.
pretty sassy despite not having had coffee )

more on the flea!!!
  • at one point i was asked to stand on a chair and ask the fatshionista's to raise their hands. about 4 outta 5 people in the room raised their hands. y'all rock for showing up and shopping and sharing the love!!!!

  • my deepest gratitude to [info]hhholiday, [info]shira623, [info]ericaceous, [info]effrontery, and [info]wikkid_smaht for taking the lead in organizing!

  • my favorite moment was seeing [info]susanstinson beaming and bouncing with joy in her new fits-like-a-glove cherry-printed sundress.

  • my next favorite moment was when a woman said to me "i come here for the clothes, but also for the self-esteem". that's why we throw the thing, baby!!!

  • my favorite purchase is the turquoise sparkly astroturf-esque cocktail dress. (i'd post a pick if i had a digital camera, but i don't. trust me, it's fantastic.)

  • i also got: a black velvet jacket, an orange leather jacket, some orange terry cloth capris, some pink cords, a polka dot button down sleeveless blouse extraordinaire, some excellent basic khaki's for work, a nice grey/green linen tank for work, four skirts (one of which is red and black tiger stripes and i'm wearing it right now), biker shorts (yay for no more chub rub!), and that's not all, but i should really get back to work.

  • fat girl flea market=yay.
