Oh, Torrid...
As if there weren't enough reasons to dislike Torrid.

In my email inbox, a few minutes ago, they sent a "casting call" for an MTV "boot-camp style reality show."

In other words -- weight loss, shame-o-rama style, I'd bet any amount of money on it.

Thanks, Torrid. Just what I needed: a "plus size" retailer telling me I need to go to boot camp to be hawt.

I am never, ever, EVER buying anything from there again. This was the last straw.

And by the way, short girls? You're not even good enough for boot camp, if you ask MTV and Torrid. You need to be at least 5'7 to even try out.

Possibly they're confused about their customer base?

My favorite thing is that this basically not only says "hey, exploit our fatty customers," but "we have customers who have low self esteem and will be humiliated for a chance at being on TV!"

It's offensive in just about every way possible. Even if this was at a non plus size store, this would be bad, but at Torrid it's a lot worse. I guess we know what they think of us.

Last time I was at a Torrid, their customer service was so stunningly rude (and even told lies about other stores at the mall) that a regional manager sent me a gift card after I complained. I really, really don't think I'm going back.

Torrid, how you do offend. I have to see what this is going to be about first before I swear off Torrid forever. Will it be satire or serious? Will there be crying and slapping? Will there be cupcakes slung in anger at judges with sucked in faces? We'll have to wait and see.

Edit: Nevermind that crap that I just said. What the hell is MTV thinking? No wonder it's the most worthless channel on TV right now.

It's been said before, but I'm not shocked by that in any way. I've seen (And in a few cases, bought) the clothes Torrid's been hawking since its inception and I don't see how anyone could be surprised that it's not exactly a fat-positive company. Most of Torrid's clothes are not terribly fat friendly in fabric, style or structure. It's a company that capitalizes on its own screwed-up ideas of trends and co-opts counterculture (and a very tired assumption of what counterculture is, in my opinion). Most entrepreneurs don't start businesses that they're passionate about. Instead, they rely on market research to tell them what will sell. And no one can deny that market research will tell them that there's money in selling polyester corsets to misunderstood fat goths and that most people, whether fat or not, are desperate to lose weight. I go into any chain (or otherwise) store knowing it's probably run by people out to make as much money as possible and that more than half of what I can actually afford was probably made in a foreign country by exploited workers. Like, no matter how many anti-Republican items you can find and buy at Urban Outfitters, it doesn't change the fact that the president of UO donates money to Santorum. Y'know?

Torrid has never really come out and said that they are Fat Friendly. And let's face it, ladies and germs, not all people who are fat are as thrilled as we are about our curves. If that were the case, shit like this wouldn't exist.

Torrid is a business. A business has to make money. They will make more money by targeting a vast majority of self loathing waif wanna-be's than our little minority of fat loving, curve hugging individuals.

Will this stop me from shopping at their stores? No. Not really. They aren't doing anything wrong. Stupid? Yes. Wrong...not so much. I applaud those of you who are outraged enough to start writing letters. Go fight that good fight, precious! Me...I'm just going to let this one ride. I see what people are saying re: Torrid is a business and therefore being fat positive or negative is up to them and what they think will best serve money making.

But as someone who started working for Hot Topic 6 years ago, I'm disappointed in where both stores have gone.

In the beginning, Hot Topic was all about the music, and helping out up and coming bands, and helping schools get money for music. We used to be able to give the clearance stuff we marked out of stock to homeless shelters. I remember when we forced the Choppers labels to only get their merch from places that didn't use sweat shop labor if they wanted to sell with us. Or when we cared about not carrying things tested on animals. It was cool, like working retail but not for an evil company.

That's really changed. Torrid was a great idea in the beginning, when they carried things with a little more stretch and in similar Hot Topic styles. Now? Now it's like Wet Seal for fatties, in a way that's terribly unflattering. And they seem to be less interested in demonstrating girls can be sexy at any and all sizes, and more about just making moolah.

I'm glad I quit.

I got contacted by a MTV casting director about a month ago, asking me to audition for this show. I didn't know Torrid was a part of this until now. However, you have to be 5'7 or taller because though it's a boot camp/fat camp type of show, the winner gets a modeling contract. Most models are 5'7 or taller. I'm an aspiring plus size model. You can still be plus size, but you do have to be toned. I don't know...I personally didn't take too much offense to Torrid being a part of this at all. This is probably because I'm used to this business and the shallowness of it all. But I can definitely see why people feel the way that they do about it.

My sister went to Camp Shane a few summers when she was a kid (this was in the late 70's) and she hated it. I personally would hate the idea of being somewhere just because I'm fat, or having to weigh and measure in front of everyone. I don't know, that's just me though.

Ok, I wouldn't want to go to boot camp anyway, I think the whole concept (at any size) is just sick... but the height thing? that's just stupid...

That's the modeling industry for you. Not many models shorter than 5'7".

Here on MTV's website they say you have to be 5'6" not 5'7" like everything else I've read about this.

Oh, I thought they were looking for plus size models, not trying to slim them down. That still doesn't really make sense. I can't see me being 'model size' after three months of ANY kind of diet, excersise, whatever. I do understand the height requirement though....that's the same across the board.

I wrote an email and got two responses:

Thanks for your email. We did debate long and hard on the topic of Model Maker and our initial reaction was the same as yours until we were assured that the goal was not to starve girls to a size 2 but to get them "agency ready" which can include girls up to a size 16. The idea for Model Maker came up in large part as a result of an episode of the MTV show "Made" in which a young woman from Ohio fulfilled her dream of becoming a plus size model by participating in the 2007 Torrid Model Search. She actually made it to our top 8. MTV prepared her for the episode with nutrition counseling, boot camp fitness instructor, runway coach, fashion consultant, etc. All of this was documented for the show. During the process Christine went from a size 18-20 to a size 14-16, gained tremendous self confidence, and was absolutely beaming when she walked that runway. As it turns out this particular episode has been one of the most watched, hence the creation of a new show, Model Maker. Torrid absolutely does stand behind all of our customers rights to be happy and beautiful whatever size they are. We also believe that our divas deserve to see their dreams come true and many of our customers do dream about becoming a model. Our own model search (photos of the winners are in our windows now) draws thousands of gorgeous plus women to our stores every summer. So, at the end of the day, we decided to support the right to dream big. The contestant selection will be our only affiliation with Model Maker and we are not a sponsor of the show.

Thanks so much for your email. We do appreciate the feedback and We thank you for your business and your support. We hope you will reconsider shopping at Torrid.

Have a nice weekend.

And one from the president!

Thanks for your email. I'm sorry that you feel we have let you down. We did think this over for a long time before agreeing to let MTV cast their show at Torrid locations. Just to be clear, we are not a sponsor of the show. Of all the emails we get from customers the number one inquiry by far is from young women who want to know how to become a model for Torrid. Each summer we have over 3000 customers show up for our model search. Likewise the MTV "Made" episode featuring a young woman from Ohio who had a dream of becoming a plus model for Torrid had incredible response. Clearly the world of modeling is of great interest to many Torrid customers. We support all of our customers whether you are happy as you are or dream about making changes in your life. Our core philosophy is that any size can be beautiful. Model Maker is a show about health, fitness, and beauty....all of which are important to many of our customers. It is not about starving the contestants down to a size 2. I am very sorry that you are offended and I hope you will still feel comfortable shopping with us. We stand behind you and your dreams, too!

Best regards,

Chris Daniel
President, Torrid

I want to see "christine" in five years, and see if she's still a 14/16 or if she's rebounded to or beyond her former 18/20. So many of us go that route, over and over, which makes me incredibly sad. Took me 46 years to figure out that I deserve love and self-respect no matter what my size, if I had figured that out at an 18/20, I'd probably still be one instead of a 26/28. So yeah, torrid, bite me. Not that you make clothes I'd ever wear...

i call bullshit on Torrid because they "masked" the purpose of the casting call email. It's not just a modeling show. And I think they were deceptive in their omission of what the show is about. They're trying to tie themselves to the massive teen marketing train that's MTV and good for them, but they should be telling the story as it is when they send out emails.

I wrote to Mia Tyler over myspace about this last night because I'm a fan of hers and she's modeling for them again and going to help with a model search this summer, so I had to ask if the she'd be involved with this. She wrote back and said she's not going to have anything to do with the show and that felt really good to hear :)

"I am not having anything to do with this because of the message it is sending... You dont have to lose weight to be a model and I dont like what MTV is doing. I understand why Torrid is involved though. And I think they are just using their store to hold the auditions.... Glad you like the jeans. I had fun buying and selling. Your pictures look great!! "

yay i love mia

But it's easy! You just need her "key tricks"! Permanent lifestyle changes and specialized medical care that she won't tell us about!
