Making fun of anonymous fatties

In light of this post, about headless fatties, I decided to show this community something that really irked me.

There is a person that I came across who has a blog and flickr steam that center, for the most part, around her “candid” photos. Basically she goes to public places in LA and takes photos of people and then posts them to make fun of, without their knowledge or consent. This practice, she claims, is perfectly legal because these people are in public places. Now, to be fair, she makes fun of everyone, big and small, and rarely ever posts anything or anyone she says she actually thinks looks good. That said, she and her friends are especially caustic when posting pics of anyone who is just the slightest bit bigger than the ideal. From what I have read, she is some kind of health professional, and she defends her anti-fat attitude based on her experiences with sick fat people. But I can tell, she had never herself been overweight and has zero sympathy or understanding toward anyone who is and I’m sure her patients are included in that. It’s hard to think she should be in any kind of job that involves dealing with people.

I don’t want to link to her directly, because I don’t believe she deserves the search engine attention. But here is a prime case of her posting a pic of what I think is a cute woman, and then cutting her down. She also defends her meanness saying that people never defend the skinny people she makes fun of. To see this, go to www.flickr.com/photos/mal ingering/120124297/ (except take out the space). Her blog is at www.therealmal ingering.com.

Personally, there are some pics and comments that I fine EXTREMELY angering. In pic # 385213906 (just paste that on the end of the Flickr URL, over the other numbers), if the comments don’t piss you off, just look at the long list of tags like, ” why can't they put all of the fat people on a boat and watch it sink?” and “lip ring is holding in the blubber”. She claims in the comments that she was just kidding and being sarcastic but I’ll let you come to your own conclusions.

There are some taken in a theme park that include pics of a teens and preteens (see pic#125887087) and comments about how sad and awful it is that the kids are fat. That is just what these kids need! Online humiliation to induce weight loss because that always works! (Now, you see, that is sarcasm.)

My BFF lives out in Orange County, CA, and she’s been begging me to visit in hopes I’ll love it and decide to move out there, but I think I the high concentrations of shallow people might make me cranky.

How would you feel if you found that you had been posted on her stream and that she and others were making fun of you? Pic # 164195748 isn’t me, but it could have been, as I’m the same shape and have pretty much the same outfit. I think if I did live there I’d go hang out at some of the places she frequents with a shirt that says something like, “I’m too wide for your narrow mind”.

Thoughts?

Everyone who posts here in [info]fatshionista should know that people with other motivations read here, people who love to either make fun of fat people, or people who want to 'thinspire' themselves. Some people take pictures and post them in their forums to make fun of us. Some regular users make fun of us in other places too.

This might sound really stupid--but is that allowed? If they take a photo you posted of yourself without permission and put it up somewhere else without telling you? I understand it's internet law but that seems like an invasion or privacy?

That girl in the picture you posted the link to is beautiful. Anyone who finds something wrong with it obviously just has issues with fat altogether and needs a bit of re-education.

People like those commenting on that blog, and ESPECIALLY the girl posting the blog, make me sad. It's hard to accept myself, especially when I know there are people like that out there just waiting to sink their vicious claws into me.

She clearly has issues - it's obvious by the way she lashes out then backpeddles. I honestly feel sorry because she walks around with so much cruelty and hatred inside. She also makes fun of a janitor who has a young child with her, so her hatred is not just for those who are overweight (post is on June 25).

What a sad, sad human being. :/

*rolls eyes*
I don't have issues with the girl at the baseball game - I don't even know her, how the hell could I have issues with her? What I do have an issue with is the fact that she's wearing ill-fitting clothing that doesn't flatter her - something I take issue with, period, no matter how thin, fat, or inbetween someone is.

For better or worse, people need to dress to flatter their figures. There are many gorgeous fat women who post here and show off their amazing sense of style and curves and rolls - and do so without looking like they're squeezed into clothing several sizes too small. No one looks good in clothing that's too tight.

People shouldn't have to be insincerely flattered about their clothing because of their weight - coddling like that shouldn't be necessary.

First off I'd like to say, that just because you take pictures does not make you a freaken photographer. Digtal cameras has made everyone think they are artistic.

2nd this chick has issues with herself ifs she goes out of her way to take pictures of people she does not know wherever they are skinny or fat, ugly or just doesn't have good fashion sense. Not everyone is born with a vogue magazine up their butt.
Herself esteem is obviously build up when she gets comments on these pictures. Taking out her own anger and self hate on strangers. And the people who comment are just as bad.

I say this, if these people aren't directly link to you, why do you care so fucking much? These people aren't ruining your day so why even bother? But then I realize the internet is full of vain, shallow, misguided people who honesty have no clue about the real world. Thinking this makes me less angry and more sorry for mankind.

What an asshole! I can't even imagine what a small life she has that she fills it up with the kind of bullshit. All the things she could be doing but she spends her time looking around for people to laugh at and imaginging the little captions for when she posts the pic. One of these days someone is going to see themself on her blog and kick her ass. That I'd like to see a picture of.

Sigh. I love how she gets so "sincere" in the comments to the one with the kids. "It's just really sad to me..."

If it's so sad, why is she turning it into a big joke? Why is she encouraging this freak show mentality? If you really feel bad for someone (we sure as hell don't need her pity, but it's at least a step closer to acceptance), do you turn around and make fun of them behind their back? Do you encourage perfect strangers to do the same, all in the name of health?

And that girl in the first picture (at the ball game) is GORGEOUS.

FWIW, there are naked pictures of me on the internet that people use in forums and LJ communities to 1) make fun of me and 2) try and piss me off. it was really embarrassing and maddening at first, but after a month or two i thought, "you know? i look really hot", which was true. half the time the person posting the photo didn't even get the response he was looking for, which made me smile.

the irony, also, is that s/he is taking photos of "ridiculous LA" and the people in it, but s/he's part of the ridiculousness. of course, s/he doesn't see that.

my point is, don't let this bother you. i know it's hard not to, because it angers me as well. but the worst ammunition is giving these people what they want: reactionary responses from fat folks. don't do it.

and you know you can go to bed knowing that you're not a horrible, fat phobic, nasty, foul mouthed waste of space like this person.

She got ugly feet - 891569695 (end of flickr URL).

Seems pretty mean to go around taking pictures and then slagging people off for how they look, but to be fair, she seems to do it to everyone. She was even bagging on women for wearing a summer dress to a baseball game, which seems like a reasonable thing to do to me.

Anyway, I think you can pretty much count on someone judging your picture adversely if you put it on the internet. That's just the nature of the internet and putting yourself out there. But you can also count on people thinking you're cute and sexy too. What's important, not to sound to Oprah about it, is what you think of you.

being a photographer, I have 2 thoughts.

1. Since she is taking specific pictures of specific people and publishing them, rather than people in a "generic street scene", she can be sued by any of them for not having obtained a model's release statement. Yes, there are legalities about what you can and cannot photograph in public.

2. 3 lovely legal words. Defamation of Character. Oh, and since it's in writing, let me also add Libel.

I am a hobbyist photographer and everything I've read is that taking pictures in a public place is fair game.

I don't think defamation of character or libel would stick, either, really because the people's names aren't being used. A person could try , but it'd probably be a tough battle.

...having just paged thru quite a bit of her photos, I have to wonder why you've opted to be outraged for the fat people she criticizes... and not (the vast majority of) the rest?

I mean, it might be one thing if she was solely seeking out heavy people to take photos of and post (and allow other people to caption - she's not doing a lot of those commentary boxes), but she seems to be taking aim pretty equally at all the asinine trends that come spewing forth from L.A.

Would you be sitting there laughing and agreeing if she only pointed out ugly fashion and bad trends on thin people, or would you be just as outraged?

It's hard not to notice that your outrage only seems to extend to the people you self-identify with - that your problem is with her picking on fat people, and not simply with her picking on people. While I hope that's not actually the case, it is how the post comes across to me.

To my knowledge, there are no pics of her face on the site. There are pics of her lower half in various pairs of jeans and I think her icon has her from the side or back or something like that. I do find it amusing that she won't really offer herself up to the same scrutiny she puts everyone else to.

i feel sorry for her. she has a complete lack of integrity, and it will come back to her. a lot of people do this without posting pictures and don't realize it is the same thing. maybe it is good to think about times we have said something about someone and realize it wasn't a good choice. we can't let other people's poison affect us. when we don't let it sink into our skin, we don't "eat" that poison, and can stay healthy. that is the best thing to do. stooping to her level makes nothing better. people like that will exist no m atter what we do. just let it go. be a beacon for our collective strength, but don't take it personally.

After reading her blog... I can't say I've found anything all THAT repugnant, yet. Granted I only read the most recent entries and skimmed the beach photo on flickr, but I haven't seen anything from her that's very upsetting. Some of it's actually pretty funny (falling asleep in the shrinky-dinks? That got a lol out of me). The fact that she spent a whole series making fun of the navel piercing fad, and not once saying something like "you guys are too fat for piercings or showing your tummy!" kinda earned bonus points.

But then, I find certain trendiness amusing (uggs in summer? hehehe, and sparkly sequin dresses and high heels at the baseball game?) And also, this is a fashion community. A fat-tolerant (and encouraging) fashion community, but fashion nonetheless - and let's face it, some clothes just looks bad on some people; like miss boobs squishin out of her shirt. Or the chic at the game who has her shirt pulled up o_O Is there something with fat fashion that means I should abandon good taste? I'm all about being fat-active (fatist?) but even I can see where something just doesn't look -good-. If I say I don't particularly like bikinis, except for on VERY particular body types, does that make me a bad person? If I get a chuckle out of scenesters with tramp stamps and stilettos at the park, is that malicious? Nah, it's an expression of taste, and an opinion (which, like an asshole, I have just like everyone else.)

I guess I just don't see the big deal. Maybe I'm missing something. o.- (Hell, I saw her getting ripped over her lack of photo abilities than anything else).

Haha, yeah, I was missing something XD That whole flickr photo link (I ignored it and went straight for the blog).

Just avoid Dodger games and you'll probably be fine. That seems to be where she gets most of her fodder anyhow. Eh, I can't say I hate -her- comments nearly as much as others commenting on her picture. Anytime a fat person's picture ends up on the internet, it explodes. Doesn't matter who posts it (even news articles.)

So, hmm. I'm a big baseball fan...

Should I have to worry about offending people with my appearance when I'm at a baseball game? I'm sure I don't look my best at a ballgame; I don't go to "be seen", I go to watch a goddamn ballgame. I go to games with a big honkin' camera and lenses hanging off me, and I'm usually wrangling a scorecard and a pencil and a roster, and my hat's a beat-up mess, and I look like I'm being pulled in 50 different directions... I'm definitely NOT wearing a cute outfit, usually just jeans and a jersey or tshirt with a ridiculous baseball joke on it...

If someone took a photo of my jersey or tshirt and commented on that (like a Yankees fan saying "look at this ridiculous stupid Red Sox tshirt"), I would be fine with that. I would get a kick outta it. But if someone was insinuating that my mere presence at the ballgame was offensive, like, how dare she show up here looking like she does? Wow. That I would not be fine with. Should a baseball fan be told she can't go to a ballgame unless she looks great? Shouldn't being a baseball fan be... y'know, enough?

I understand that people wearing unflattering clothes= comedy, at any size. But damn, do I have to dress to the nines to go to a fucking ballgame? It's not the Opera.

Thing is, I don't give a shit about this stuff when I go to a ballgame. I'm too busy enjoying the baseball. But the insinuation that I SHOULD give a shit kind of worries me.

Actually, if you read the blog (and not just the photo stream), she tears apart people for dressing to the 9s going to a ballgame, wearing stilletos, etc, and says that if you're not wearing a team shirt and jeans, something's wrong with your priorities.

But dressing casual doesn't mean wearing clothes several sizes too small - and that was her complaint about the one person, at least. Not that she wasn't dressed up, or nicely, but that her clothes didn't fit.

Oh totally, that too.
Cameras are odd things too. I've got different pictures of the same friends where one will look great, and the other..eeep, and its all the same person on the same day.

I've seen that blog before and she does make fun of everybody. I guess that's just her way of trying to be know on the web.

In any case it shows that L.A. is a full of different people and I like that. :)

I am a bit late joining in this discussion but I have to say I partly agree with rocza. I agree that the way you dress you influence how you are being treated by people - partly because you look better if you dress better but the most part because you feel more confident and the kind of people who like to make you feel bad are more likely to attack people who look self concious.
On the other hand, I totally think everybody should be able to wear what they want and not get stared at or yelled at or whatever.
However - this is not how society rolls at the moment and even if all big girls would dress whatever way they wanted, it wouldn't change the way people see us.
Maybe it will happen at some point but until then we'll have to live with the fact that if we dress nicer, we'll be treated nicer.

I like to compare it with racism. I grew up in a small town in Austria. My best friend was a beautiful girl from North Africa. When we were ten and she was really skinny, looked young and kind of akward, she got made fun of a lot - just because she wasn't white like all the others. As we got older she turned into this amazingly beautiful woman, kind of like a bit skinnier version of Beyonce and NOBODY EVER made any negative comments about her anymore. She could walk past a group of skinheads (which unfortunately there still are a lot in that town) and they would check her out, maybe whistle but NEVER commented on her skin color. For them and semingly every body else - her being beautiful qualified her as a white person.
And I think it's similar with well dressed biggies.

I think you are saying that people who more closely resemble the dominant social idea of beauty are treated more like members of privileged classes, yes?

And I think that is a valid observation. But we seem to want to deal with it differently. If fat people continue to knuckle under to the idea that there is only one acceptable kind of beauty, then things will never change. The only change comes through challenging those notions, those narrow ideas.

This whole conversation bothers me because I've heard the exact same references and arguments used to justify why fat people can't be sexy or beautiful. Judgement is judgement, no matter how pretty the bow on top. And, personally, I don't think anyone has a right to judge another. I can tell you that something doesn't work for me or fit my tastes, but I don't have a right to judge.

well i saw your post last night and decided to look at that girl's flickr. i was reading the comments for a long time and getting angrier and angrier. the honest truth is that i am an evil person too and sometimes make fun of people. i mean when i am out with my sister or friends we may see someone dressed horribly and share a secret laugh, etc. etc. i don't really want to change people, but sometimes they just look stupid or bad and i don't see any harm in making fun of them behind their backs. maybe this makes me a horrible person, but anyway overall i don't have a problem with that girl is doing. taking pictures of people who look ridiculous or bad, in her eyes, is fine. what really bothered me is all the comments that generalized and made so many assumtpions. they went on and on about how all fat people are like this and all are awful and unhealthy and on and on (as you know since you read it too). ughhh, so annoying. those people are so ignorant, there is just no reasoning with them.
