| In the Press |
[Sep. 5th, 2008|04:48 pm] |
I'm gearing up to do my Year in Review and the more I thought about it, the more I realized that, in order to do justice to the multitude of amazing things that have happened to us this year, I was going to have to break it down into more digestible chunks. So sayeth the vegetarian.
So this is where I archive all the press we've gotten this year; and, looking at it, I'm really floored by it. Because we only payed for one. And I'm not tellin' ya which. -_^
Spring, 2008 Our local paper, The West End News does a charming article about us and our business titled Anime-Kimonos and much more. The main picture is me in a haori lookin' like Friar Tuck. Not my best, but better than nothing. And whaddaya know? People in our neighbourhood actually recognized us from the article. Not a bad bit of local celebrity-ism.
Early Summer, 2008 We're nominated, along with a buhzillion other businesses, for Portland's Indie Biz Awards. What makes it special isn't that we didn't win, but that we were nominated for multiple awards. What's truly amazing? We don't have a store front like nearly every other business listed.
Mid Summer, 2008 neko gets interviewed for, like, a million hours during PortCon by Kawaii Films, a nice guy with an accent and a camera that's making a film on Anime Con culture who tells us that our stuffs amazing. We may, or may not, actually end up in the documentary. But it's still cool. ^_^
Late Summer, 2008 Our accountant's quarterly newsletter features a write-up on us, our trials and tribulations, and all the jazz that comes with being a beginner business. Very cool because our accountant has tons of clients that receive the newsletter and it makes us feel like we're finally being seen as a legitimate business by others in business.
Nearly Autumn, 2008 Style Flash encourages everyone to 'Feel the Warm Fuzzies' at Neko-jin Designs. Had a total Rudolph moment of 'she thinks I'm cute!', complete with laughing elves and unexpected flight. I only wish they'd taken a different picture...
While it's not copius amounts of publicity and I don't think I'll be running from the paparazzi anytime soon, we're pretty pleased with it. What have we learned? That there's a HUGE difference between what you actually say in an interview and what the interviewer hears or writes down.
It's almost frightening to read the article afterward; suddenly we've got over 500 repeat customers and Otakon was over 30,000 people. Though nothing is quite as priceless as the article that misrepresented our mission statement to say "Cute sells, people love it. It's a corny mission statement, but it's true.".
Hmmm...there was something in there about making people smile...wasn't there?
But it is what it is. And what it is is pretty cool. If a little weird and not quite right.
Here's to another year's worth of being noteworthy! -Kit |

| Andy is my Papa Smurf... |
[Sep. 2nd, 2008|10:57 pm] |

Smurfs is my all time fave cartoon. I have a collectible Smurf glass that I always drink out of. Everything tastes better and is more refreshing out of a Smurf glass. Just now me and Andy were on the couch and I asked him if he could get me some Smurf water(meaning he should get me some water but be sure to put it in the Smurf cup). He came back in and handed me a glass of bright blue water. He dyed it blue and put it in my special cup. Awwwwwww! |

| Amazing Update #2 |
[Sep. 2nd, 2008|06:02 pm] |
This kit doesn't have many pet peeves--sure there's the road rage I experience from other drivers being on the go so much, and the occasional tweak when someone tells me I'm wrapping a kimono wrong, but all in all, I'm a little hyper, but pretty laid back.
There is one thing that'll always get me going, though, and it's this phrase: "Wow, these are expensive!"
Just watch my eyes turn angry colours after that one.
Allow me to explain.
 For Sally - <3 Jack $48
Welcome to the wonderful world of knitting! An extremely time-consuming art that I happen to enjoy immensely. I worked first-hand in the yarn industry, once upon a time, and it was required that I learn to knit so I knew what the blazes I was talking about when I went to sell the stuff. It wasn't long before I began to like it and in no time I was coming up with my own patterns. When I launched my own mini line, Nine Tails All-Natural Knits, it was met with such large interest that I knew I had to incorporate my hobby into the business.
Hence, I make mitts. Fingerless ones that are both fashionable and functional, are perfect for typists, cashiers, writers, artists, and others, and are a nice, handmade alternative to cutting the fingers off a cheap pair of gloves. Recently, I introduced Fuzzy Happy Hats into the mix--colourful, knit hats with fuzzy ears. Each hat or pair of mitts can take anywhere from 3-5 hours to create. I love making them, and the people who purchase them really enjoy them, and that's what's important.
But it can still make me lose my mind when someone tells me $35 for a pair of handknit mitts is too expensive.
So for all the other wonderful people who understand the time, love, and creativity that go into my knitwear, I invite you to our newly revamped and thoroughly stocked Knitwear section. I believe that each piece I create is a work of art, and that there is a person somewhere who will love it completely. I hope that maybe you're one of those people.

I've been chained to the NJD mainframe for the last couple of days. I think I should change my billing address to start with http://www...
But the website's coming along. Slowly, but I'm pleased with it overall. There are still some dead images and links, but those should be ok and active sometime tomorrow. We're adding over a hundred new items, so I promise you it'll be well worth the wait!
Anyway, I was grooving along putting stuff up; neko's behind me drawing character portraits for our latest endeavor--booth bling. More on that later.
At length, I hear the skrtch-skrtch of the pencil stop. A little voice pops up between my cursing of CSS and the sexy sound of the FTP saying File Loading.
And neko asks me, 'who does this look like'?
Confused, I turn. I believe my response was something like, 'holy sh!t, you made Louis look like David Duchovny!'.
Of course, she didn't mean to. But I guess you can't readily erase over eight years of x-files fan worship, huh?
You be the judge--

I love my life.

| | Deep Forest | ] | We've been well aware for quite awhile that our entire cast has demanded character development. And who can blame them? Cute little boys kissing other boys [or girls kissing girls] will only sell so many shirts and bags before people start wanting to know the stories behind them.
To celebrate our one year anniversary, I've gone ahead and done what's been long overdue for our little demi-fur cuties--I've compiled their get-together stories into an actual section of the website [instead of stuffing them into a link at the bottom of the index page >.< ] complete with names and pictures. We will also be handing out character sheets at future conventions for new converts of the ultra-cute.
With that said, I'd like to re-introduce all you wonderful folk to our family of demi-furs.
