Party at Gateries on Wednesday 5th August?
What would you think of having a Farthing Party party for those of us going to Anticipation, at Les Gateries, where we've had the Friday night hanging out the last two years, on the Wednesday before Worldcon begins on the Thursday? I had thought of having a party at the actual con, in a suite, but this is complicated and expensive and likely to involve doing the kinds of things that make cons less fun for me. Thoughts? | | Thursday, September 4th, 2008 | 7:31 pm [davidlevine]

Bibliocide
I was fascinated by nineweaving's story of the lunatic who vandalized a million dollars' worth of books at Harvard, and I'd like to know more, but my Google-fu has failed me. Can anyone point me to some information, online or off, about this fascinating case? | | Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008 | 9:01 am [papersky]

Links, reviews...
If people would like to posts links to party posts they may have made or may make, that would be very nice. | | Monday, September 1st, 2008 | 11:37 pm [davidgoldfarb]

3-timers
Just for my own amusement, I tried to put together a list of those people who have attended all three Farthing Parties to date. Here's what I came up with: The three people who are too obvious to mention Christopher K. Davis Debra Doyle Beth Friedman David Goldfarb Andy Hickmott Jim Macdonald Elise Matthesen Yves Menard Teresa & Patrick Nielsen Hayden Joel Polowin Shana Rosenfeld Vicki Rosenzweig Jon Singer Cally Soukup Jean-Louis Trudel rushthatspeaksHave I missed anybody? (ETA: Yes I had, those that have been brought to my attention are now on the list.) | | Thursday, August 28th, 2008 | 1:59 pm [papersky]

Good news for Sunday Survivors' Party
Unfortunately we don't have gerisullivan to run it this year, but we're delighted to announce that it is going to be sponsored by the Reno in 2011 worldcon bid. We will therefore have wine and beer in addition to tea and tisanes, chocolate, and banana muffins. You're still encouraged to bring anything else you might want, but isn't that cool! | 2:07 pm [rysmiel]

Thursday dinner plans
I'm thinking in terms of meeting up for dinner tomorrow, 18.30ish, in Shambhala - the Tibetan place nearly the entire Farthing party descended on like a horde of locusts Friday of last year. Anyone who will be around and is interested, mail me at rysmiel-at-gmail, before about 4 tomorrow; party size will be limited to what they can sensibly seat at one table, so probably eight. | | Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 | 9:04 am [papersky]

Places to Eat on Duluth
Note on BYOB. "BYOB" or "bring your own bottle" also known as "Aportez votre vin" is an interesting artifact of licensing laws. It's easier to get a license for a restaurant than an alcohol license, and so some restaurants don't bother, they just serve soft drinks (or just water) and if you bring your own wine they'll open it for you and in some cases bring out an ice-bucket for you to put it into. The advantages of this to you are obvious -- you get to pay SAQ prices or Depanneur prices not restaurant prices, and can therefore have better wine for less money, and you get to have the wider choice of wine at a SAQ. SAQs are what we call off-licenses, or liqueur stores. You can also buy wine at any depanneur, aka corner store, or any supermarket. (Wine at the depanneur is usually what's known as "Vin Dep" a fairly limited choice of fairly ordinary fairly cheap wine, much of it shipped here from France in tankers and then bottled. It's nothing like as bad as you'd think.) Anyway, if a restaurant is BYOB, you have to provide your own wine if you want any. There's usually a depanneur on the nearest corner. There's a SAQ with a good choice and lots of pre-chilled white wine, on Mont Royal at, um, a block east of Mentana. There's also a supermarket (4 Freres) with a good range of wine there. Ride offer from Boston
My bf and I are coming up from Boston, leaving sometime Friday morning. It would be nice to have one or two passengers (that's all we can fit) to defray the cost of gas and keep us company a bit. No, we don't need drivers (heck, he won't even let me help drive). Caveat: You will be riding in the back seat of a Chevrolet Lumina without air conditioning, but we do open the windows. And the stereo can be attached to "portable electronic devices" ( : Comment on this entry to express interest. | | Wednesday, August 20th, 2008 | 9:05 pm [papersky]

Friday Plans
For those who are going to be here on Friday 29th, which is only just over a week away now. There's no program until Saturday, but we're going to have three meeting up points in the day. Like last year, we will have brunch at L'Evidence at 11h00, followed by splitting up into Expeditions. We do have some ideas, but will also welcome suggestions. This will be followed by meeting up for afternoon tea at 17h00 at the Brulerie St Denis on St Denis south of the Plaza. (Downhill. Number to be posted later.) They have plenty of room, a great selection of teas, great air conditioning, and very good cakes and pastries. Then people will doubtless make up various dinner parties, to be followed (like last year) by evening hanging out at Les Gateries, from about 19h00. Les Gateries have food, alcohol, soft drinks, coffee, quiet music and lots of space. I thought this worked pretty well last year. | | Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 | 12:24 pm [mrissa]

Staying later
The officially listed dates for Farthing Party are August 29-31. I am curious for my own selfish reasons: who's going to be in Montreal later than that? I won't be leaving until early on Saturday the 6th. I understand if you don't want to post travel plans for the entire internet to see, but if you felt up to e-mailing me about staying later than 8/31, I'd be glad to hear from you. My gmail address is marissalingen. | | Thursday, July 31st, 2008 | 10:58 pm [redbird]

Hotel question (not the one you're probably thinking)
For some bizarre reason, I have a very hard time actually sleeping in the con hotel. This is based on two years, two hotel rooms, and at least three beds. (I don't remember if I tried switching beds the first year; I did last year, and it didn't help.) So, I'm trying to figure out what other options exist. cattitude and I are probably coming up Thursday and staying through Sunday night. One thing I should do is see if the La Presidence part of the building will rent to us for that time period. (I'm guessing that they may have bought different furniture than the hotel proper.) The other thing I'm wondering, and this is mostly addressed to the Montrealers reading this, is what if anything people reading this know about other hotels near the con. If none of the above pans out, we will book a room in the regular hotel and hope for the best. Current Mood: curious | 4:45 pm [papersky]

Hotel. Memberships.
The hotel just called. The room block is officially closed, but you can still get the rates if you call them and ask for Jenny Long, and use the words Book Launch as before. Also, if you are coming and haven't already, please buy a membership now. We are not doing at the door membership and it's really useful to me for doing program if I know you're going to be here. We're also taking donations towards the Thank You For Existing Award for Elise. Oh, and program is kind of mostly done, and some of it is going to be brilliant. Wait and see. | | Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008 | 7:23 pm [rushthatspeaks]

Room share offer
My housemate and I are coming from Boston to Farthing Party, and have a non-smoking room at the hotel for the nights of the 28th, 29th, and 30th. If anyone is in need of accommodations, we will have a double bed you could use any or all of these nights, for a one-third share of the room cost for the number of nights you use it. Let me know here or email me at my username, no breaks/spaces/underscores/capitals, at gmail dot com. | | Thursday, July 17th, 2008 | 10:25 pm [stakebait]

Does anyone need a roommate?
