| About: | FANTHROPOLOGY - The Study of fandom. Because having fun can be serious business. Welcome to Fanthropology. If you've just joined or are thinking of joining, you may want to check out our past areas of discussion. Fanthropology is a community dedicated to discussing and analyzing fandom culture, news, and events, for both fandom in general and specific fandoms. Our goal is analysis, understanding, and relaying of information related to fan culture. We're here to think and be informed - but we want to have fun doing it! This community is open for discussions on any fandom related to fictional creations and popular media: television, books, computer games, animation, movies, role-playing games, etc. We also include discussions of sports entertainment fandom (such as wrestling), and fandoms of things portrayed in the above medium. In general the only subject not covered is sports fandom, as that is often adqueately represented and analyzed elsewhere. What is appropriate to post here? 1) Any fandom-related news. 2) Any particuarly interesting fandom experience for discussion, analysis, or information. 3) Links to articles on fandom and related issue for discussion, analysis, or information. 4) Discussions and presentation of theories on fandom and fandom culture. 5) Reviews and links to books and articles on fandom. 6) Links to interesting and unusual fandom resources. 7) Links to articles, pictures, and so forth on major popular-culture events and occurances. 8) Calls for help in finding fandom-related information, advice, or resources. If you're not sure something is relevant, use your best judgement. All posts are the responsibility of their creators, and do not reflect the opinions of Fanthropology as a whole, or of any other individual members. What are the rules? Besides keeping to the focus of the group within reason: 1) Be respectful of others, but feel free to intelligently and civily state and challenge opinions. 2) Be willing to accept civil challenges to opinions. 3) Use lj-cuts for anything larger than 2-3 paragraphs or for graphics. 4) This is not a place for direct discussion of religion, politics, or personal issues. However as these issues may come up in a discussion of fandom, please keep such discussions in the context of analysis and understanding. 5) If you post anything that may have spoilers for a series, put it in an lj-cut. In general, assume the worst case if something may be a spoiler. 6) An introductory post by new users is neither encouraged nor discouraged. 7) Conversations will diverge and change. Since we're a friendly group, it's acceptable for things to get off-topic - besides, part of our reason being here is to have fun and connect with those of like interests. However if you suspect a thread of conversation is likely to go on for a long time and be off-topic and will involve only a few people, please move it to a private conversation if possible. 8) Do not turn off comments on your post. This is a discussion community. 9) Please note when research is official/sanctioned or unofficial/for fun or curiosity. To those doing official research: if you solicit fanthropology members for information via a post to this community for the purposes of official research, it is your responsibility to detail your policies on consent, usage of information, and the purposes of your research. 10) Fandom issues can cross into issues of legality, ethics, and morality, which can be both productive to discuss, but also disruptive or worse. Keep these issues in mind when posting, as good communication may be all that stands between an interesting discussion, a flamewar, or worse. The moderators reserve all rights to delete posts that may contain questionable, disruptive, and/or potentially illegal content. Violations of these rules (especially #1, #2, #4, #10) and disruption of the community is grounds for banning if such behaviors become disruptive and detract from the dialogue (we all have our off days and get testy, but it shoudln't interfere with the focus of the community). Note that deletion of such posts is usually note done as even disruptive conversations may have some useful historical information. The above rules may be modified with additional suggestions from the community. SPECIAL EVENTS MONDAY VISUALS: A time to relax and post links to amusing art, motivators, photoshops, macros, and more. WTF WEDNESDAY: Every wednesday there's a moderator post where people can post their petty, small-scope, less-than-intellectual questions about fandoms, or respond to others. This is the time to discuss things like "what really is the appeal of this character" or "where did this single slang term come from." FUN-TIME FRIDAY: We can't always be serious. Every friday there's a moderator post for wacky, weird, and silly discussion and challenges. Anyone else is welcome to post fan humor that day as well. Suggestions are also welcome.
