02:21 pm - goodbye and good luck
Hiatus! Largely due to the internet being a hassle to get at. I'll be around-ish, but mostly absent.

Later. :)

PS: best SasuNaru art ever.

With everything I've put into this, including slashfic, it keeps saying I'm male. Well, except for that Sonic/Peach thing, but still, mostly male. Wiggy. O.o

I am most displeased.

They're making another Red Sonja movie. Ooookay. Maybe it could be...

Starring Rose McGowan.

WHAT?

While I like Rose McGowan... she's all... small. Crazy Brigitte Nielsen could probably still crush her one handed.

I'm sorry but this:

Sooooo does not equal this:

She's a like a twig in comparison.

She said in an interview that she was surprised she was offered the part. It couldn't possibly be the fact that she was boffing the director could it? He was going to remake Barbarella and was insisting she play the lead in that too...

10:09 pm - more squee; weekend!
So it is the weekend! I've made a little bit of advancement on my plan for the weekend (that being: clean the area around my desk. So far I've picked up shoes and clothes, which is already making a significant difference. Now i have to tackle the desk itself. Um. Meep?)

FF4 DS might kill me with awesome. Golbez's voice actor is perfect. So perfect I squealed out loud when he showed up. I am absolutely in love with the fact that the maps for Mt. Ordeals have random bones scattered around on them! But this game is a lot harder than I remember it being. The boss on Mt. Ordeals pretty nearly walked me, ugh. But I am just...I...the thing where I can read characters' thoughts by going into the menu screen? I have been nerdgasming over it 24/7. And Cecil's thoughts in Fabul, before the big event, pretty much brought to mind a phrase [info]mithrigil had used to describe one of her fics, that being: Irony Cudgel Says, rama-lama-bang-bang!

and spoilers through Ordeals )

Anyway. On to sorting through the obscene piles of mail and such and then making my shredder protest the amount of work I pile upon it.

(Also, Kain, stop it. You have 300,000 words coming to you already. I'm not giving you more.)

(p.s. a handful of things hit me with a meta sledgehammer today while I babbled at [info]celeloriel amidst my playing. More on that in a separate post.)

I spent $130.06 at B. Noble today, not counting my mother's and brother's purchases. (I did do Mike's favour, yes.) Not bad, but that was with discounts and that was just on books. I went in their music & DVD section and bought some stuff. Spent $72.54 there, so it was $202.60, which isn't bad. Eleven volumes of manga (where am I gonna put them?), one DVD, and one CD (GASP JAYDEN BOUGHT MUSIC).

The Loot - Manga and books that were not mine )

Here's what was on my list but they didn't have it. )

The Other Section - DVDs and Music )

They had Fairy Cube (which is also by Kaori Yuki), but I told myself no more impulse buys. >.> I ALMOST BOUGHT A MANGA BECAUSE THE ARTWORK WAS GORGEOUS. The first word of the title was "Mamotte". Forget what the second word was, but it began with an "s". BUT IT WAS GORGEOUS. And I told myself no 'cause I am not made of money (unfortunately).

Of course I have pics of the new manga additions. XD Why wouldn't I?

Keep in mind that Air Gear (the one on the top of the pile), Kenshin, and those two volumes of Godchild are from the last trip to B. Noble, not this trip. And there are big spaces in between certain manga because that's where new additions are going.

I think one day I'll sort my manga by author, just for a change. And because I am a nerd. Muwahahahaha.

So, if you can't tell, I've kinda become obsessed with The Dark Knight.

I'll probably get a review of some sort up soon, I just want to see it a second time before I do so.

Also...I'm home. Yay?

I'm also working on getting stuff made to put in my etsy shop within the next week or so. Woo!

04:02 pm - Strength of the Mountain and Fearsome Tempest
More heartbreakingly sappy stories of Phenix and her brother. Larquen will get to hear this story if the subject gets brought up, it's one of her happiest memories of Arivass. He really did love being alive.

Incidentally, I named Phenix's brother after that river you have to cross in the 'escort Kael' mission in Frozen Throne. The one Tyrande fell in. /trivia

Phenix's song is now Storm in a Teacup - Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I need a good Exalted icon for these. o.o;

12:31 pm - it's summertime forever
I learned a very valuable, if not disgusting, lesson yesterday -- er, rather, early this morning. As in, three or four o'clock in the morning.

Never, under any circumstances, chew gum and then fall asleep. Ever. I fell asleep facedown reading last night thanks to the drugs vitamin relaxant my mother gave me (B12, or something like that), and when I woke up in the middle of the night, the gum that I had been chewing had somehow fallen out of my mouth, gotten all over the mattress, and then promptly decided to stick itself all over my arms, hands, chest, neck, and mouth. It was not pleasant.

The sad thing is that I was almost tempted to sleep like that and take care of it in the morning because I was so damn out of it. But, no. I got out of bed, grabbed a sponge, and scrubbed until most of the gum was gone. There was a bit of sticky residue left on the tips of my fingers, but that was gone by this morning. I managed to get most of the gum off the mattress, and whatever I didn't manage to get off I covered with a paper towel before falling asleep again. The offending mattress cover is now taking a nice, hot bath in the washing machine. My clothes, strangely enough, didn't get any gum on them except for one small piece that I managed to get off.

But, yeah. It was pretty gross. There's nothing quite like waking up in the middle of the night with tropical flavored gum stuck on you like some kind of grotesque spider web. It's a good thing I don't have a phobia of spiders, or else I would have seriously freaked out.

10:22 am - Let's Talk About Writing
A writer doesn't spring up fully formed, the words of the Muses pouring from her lips. A writer learns the craft the same as anyone else does. Some learn it more quickly than others - that's what talent is.

Anyone can be a writer. Anyone can continue to learn more as a writer. It just takes the same amount of applied effort that goes into being a good creator of anything.

I don't usually think about my writing process very much. I write in plain text, I have to break myself from constantly repolishing a piece instead of writing it to the end, and I sometimes skimp on the editing phase. Some scenes are more difficult to write than others for me, so I try to find ways to work in those types of scenes.

A lot of the time, I keep track of things people say about writing, though. So here's a collection of links I've found useful over the years.

Fifty Thoughts on Writing by [info]seanan_mcguire - Fifty short thoughts that cover the process with an especial focus on editing and reacting to criticism.

A Seminar on Writing Prose by James Alan Gardner - This piece is rather long, but it is extremely worth it. It does not talk about the process of developing ideas or plots or characters. It talks about the art of putting one word after another to form a sentence. This is all about using words to effectively communicate what you want to communicate.

The Turkey City Lexicon, available from the Science Fiction Writers of America site - This is a lexicon that assigned designations to a lot of bad writing tropes frequently seen in science fiction workshops of the time it was written. Reading over it always amuses me and reminds me of some things I just want to avoid.

Good to Great for Writers by Shanna Swendson - Taking the ideas of the business book Good to Great, Shanna applies them to writing. A useful explanation of why 'good is the enemy of great' and how to overcome it if you're willing to make the effort.

How to Finish a Work-in-Progress by [info]zoepaleologa - This is specifically geared towards the serialized WIP typical of fanfiction, but almost all of the advice translates very easily to the original work. A lot of sound advice that covers both how to not get stuck in the plot and details of your story and how to deal with it when the responses from your readers are killing your drive to continue.

Rx for Writer's Block Part 1 Part 2 by [info]cleolinda - Part One contains useful tips and tricks for just dealing with not wanting to write when it's performance anxiety that's blocking you. I myself use the bracketing trick when I'm writing, and I don't want to lose the flow.

Part Two discusses what to do when you've already written stuff and have gotten insecure about the originality of it.

How To Keep Your Challenge Commitments by [info]icarusancalion - This is geared specifically for the writing challenges with deadlines typical of fanfiction communities, but a lot of the advice translates very easily to original work. A discussion on why losing your self-discipline damages you as a writer, how to decide if you want to do a challenge, how to plan for writing to a deadline, and what to do when you get smacked with delays that drop you near the deadline with almost nothing written.

Limyaael's Insanejournal - Limyaael regularly discusses specifics of how and how not to do a certain something in fiction. Her ideas shouldn't be considered as cast-in-bronze, do-this-or-suffer, but they almost always encourage people to think about the topic at hand. (Though, I could do without the number of people who comment with "Well, I do that, but it totally works in my story!" There's rarely a need to justify why your take on something works.)

Be a Sex-Writing Strumpet by [info]stacia_kane - An ongoing article series about writing erotic sex scenes. I've personally found it quite helpful, especially part three. So far, she's covered what a sex scene should accomplish, deciding if and when to use one, advice on writing them without embarrassment, and some specifics on the language used in sex scenes.

Reply's Reason by [info]sapphirebreeze - An essay on the subject of writing feedback to stories, focusing on how to effectively communicate when you have certain specific goals, such as encouraging the author to write more or encouraging the author to improve.

1) We now have Rock Band. Don't ask, I don't know.

2) Sleep cycle's incredibly fucked-up. It's now 5 AM. Think I'll try staying up the rest of the day, with the aid of caffeinated beverages.

3) Got a new library card. Took out and finished The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. Scary as hell. Don't want to be a girl anymore. Also took out Neil Gaiman's American Gods; will start at some point.

4)
Dad: Hey, what's this almond stuff?
Me: Ehh, you can try using it as creamer...
A few seconds later...
Dad: THIS IS FOUL. D: -gets new cup of coffee-

5) Rasputina's playing in Northampton the week before Nightwish. Tickets are mad cheap, too. Wish good bands would stop coming all at once.

6) Might be going to a Ren Faire this fall with a friend from school. \:D/

7) Seven's a neat number.
