Minor Homophone Rant
Really, this isn't all that big, but . . .

Phase = 1. That which is exhibited to the eye; the appearance which anything manifests, especially any one among different and varying appearances of the same object. 2. Any appearance or aspect of an object of mental apprehension or view; as, the problem has many phases. 3. A particular appearance or state in a regularly recurring cycle of changes with respect to quantity of illumination or form of enlightened disk; as, the phases of the moon or planets.

(There are more, but I don't need to include them all.)

Faze = to disturb, rattle, disconcert.

Archaically, 'faze' did not exist, and 'phase' was used to mean what 'faze' does now; so you could use 'phase' to mean the above definition (although people will look at you strangely).

But you cannot use 'faze' to substitute for any of the other current meanings of 'phase'.  Really, you can't.  'Phase' means a lot of things, and 'faze' means only one.  Incorporeal characters cannot 'faze through' walls.  Software companies cannot 'faze out' old projects.  Please, be using 'faze' only where you're supposed to; and if it makes it easier, ditch it altogether and just use 'phase' for everything.  It saves time and headache.

I've never seen faze used as a word before, but granted most of the stuff I read is a little older than most fanbrats.

Me neither. I always assumed faze was an awful spelling mistake. In fact it's only in my dictionary as an alternate spelling of feeze (to drive off).

It's in my dictionary as the above definition, which is the one I've always understood it to mean; but I'm not sure how recent the acceptance of that spelling is.

Completely. (Did you read Hidden Years? The story about his parents made me CRY. Shale was so cool.)

(That Hidden Years and the one concerning Ember and Mender were my favorites, for different reasons. Shale was my HERO.)

Too true. I always use the more archaic spellings; the others just look so wrong to me. As a result one of my betas keeps asking me to use the "more common" spellings for "phase", "plough", "foetal" ... you get the idea.

I'm all for using archaic spellings; I think in this case especially, using the modern spelling just confuses people, and they use it completely wrong. While initially I was confused and angered by the use of 'phase' in place of 'faze', a little research told me that 'phase' was actually MORE correct, and now I think it's just a better idea overall.

I'm glad I'm not. It drives me up the effing wall, and most of the time when I complain to my friends I just get weird looks.

Relatedly, a note to companies that make stupid crappy toy guns that are covered in gaudy chrome and light up pink and make terrible sounds: Star Trek does not have "phaser" trademarked. You don't have to mangle it into "fazer."

>.o Ouch. Transcendent fail.

It defeats the whole purpose of the root word 'phase' being used for the weapon in the first place . . . *weeps*

Unless it's meant to disconcert and rattle the people at which you point it, in which case *SLAP*
