fandom pays poll
Please vote if you consider yourself to be a part of LJ-based fandom. Whether you are an active participant or a lurker, you might consider yourself part of LJ-based fandom if you got a LJ partly or wholly because of fandom, fan fiction, fan art, vidding, etc.

The purpose of the poll is to get a basic idea how much money fandom pays into Livejournal. ([info]shaggirl points out any LJ user can see their payment history here for reference.) The final questions relate to the recent suspension of fannish communities and journals with controversial terms in their "interests" lists.

Anyone can see the results of this poll and your name will be attached, so if that bothers you, don't take the poll. :-) If you'd still like to participate without making this info public, you can make a screened comment with your answers over here.

Note that most questions below ask what you have. So if someone gave you a paid account or paid icons, your answer to "Do you have a paid account" will be yes, and your answer to "how many of your accounts have paid icons" will be "12" or however many it is.

But then answer honestly when it comes to how much you have paid for your LJ account: if you've never paid a dime, choose $0. There's another question for gift-givers to estimate how much they've paid so that we can hopefully account for LJ fairies.

I am really on the fence about this... I am disturbed that some fringe group with little real-world credibility has the power to get Six Apart to delete/suspend LJs and communities that had no real-world interest in anything illegal. Fiction != real life!

How long before a parent finds Harry Potter NC17 fic? Or my POTC NC 17 fic? And complains? Will Six Apart go after slash, anything adult, RPF? This is very disturbing. Am waiting to see how this resolves in the next few days...

I love LJ. I love the set up, I love my flist, I love my communities. I really really hope Six Apart wakes up and gets a clue.

I'm with you. I'm hoping that if we tote up some numbers here to show how much fandom spends on LJ, it will help Six Apart see how much they'd stand to lose by making the wrong decision here.

I am honestly just waiting to see what may come of all of this. If in fact, I see the LJ's of friends deleted, then obviously I will not be using LJ as much. I am considering, however, finding a new place in which to post fics, even if it is just creating my own website.

Like [info]ktnb81, I was planning on buying a permanent account when they next became available. Now I'm definitely not going to. In fact, I started thinking last night: I started on usenet, then moved to mailing lists (squidge!), then yahoo groups, and reluctantly to LJ. I like LJ a lot more now than when I started using it, but I do think it's time to move on to some other medium.

The question is what other medium? What's out there that would serve our purpose? Unlike you, Ces, I'm not wild about [info]astolat's idea of an all-purpose multi-fandom archive, but maybe something along those lines, run by fans and for fans. Kind of like slashcity's goals, now that I think about it.

I dunno. I'm really unhappy here, which is kind of unusual for me. But FanLib and the deletions and the way some of the fannish LJ people have behaved . . . I'd really like to have another option.

Good poll. I hope you get a lot of responses.

maybe something along those lines, run by fans and for fans.

This is almost exactly what we were talking about at lunch with Dr. Jenkins last week - fandom needs an organized repository of people, across fandoms, who are prepared to represent what fandom is to outside agencies, the press, any media agent, whatever. [info]fandom_voice was created in the small hours this morning for just that purpose. You might keep an eye on it.

In terms of a server run by and for fans, I think journalfen is it, honestly. But the issue, as someone stated, is that a mass migration to another site would cause the server to collapse as journalfen's did yesterday when it was overrun.

Anyway, I have to say I'm strongly considering not pumping any more money into LJ and stopping use but as I indicated, I'm still undecided.

This is still early in the delete/suspension thing and I am waiting to see how LiveJournal addresses this issue. How they respond will most likely be the determining factor in whether I stay or go.

I've had an account since '01.

The main one is permanent. I have other comms and journals, almost all of which are either paid or accounts I've given money to LJ for.

I've also bought paid time and gifts for plenty of friends. I was going to renew some lapsed accounts once things calm down here finacially by July and my roommate, who has several paid accounts as well, was going to buy a perm.

We're not giving LJ another cent.

Question that should be on the poll but isn't:

If you have a basic or plus LJ account and were considering/planning an upgrade to a paid account, how have your plans changed?

__ -I will still buy a paid account in the near future.

__ -I will wait and see what happens with this mess before buying an account.

X -I absolutely will not upgrade to a paid account unless there is some assurance that the unfounded suspensions will stop and that those whose accounts/communities have been deleted can apply for some sort of review process with the possibility of having their accounts restored.

I told myself that I would get a paid account when I was no longer a starving college student. Well, I can possibly still allege "starving" since I'm job hunting, but I'm not a college student. And if LJ is going to pull these kinds of stunts, I'm not paying. I wanted to pay because I love the site and I want to support it and keep it running- now, even if I pay, I probably can't depend on its standards and service? Why waste my money? Great timing, LiveJournal! Thanks for preventing me from making a bad purchase!

A bit more detail about the way I voted:

I generally said I'd probably keep paying and using as I always have, but the issue of pay is a bit odd at the moment.

I have the money to pay up my journal for another year ready (well, it's in transition between my account and my mother's, since Mum's account has a Visa card) but I don't have to pay it up for a good few months yet (not until September actually), I was going to do it this early because it'd get it over and done with for another year.

Now I am very inclined to defer payment until this whole situation has resolved and use the $50 (AUD - that's equivalent of US$35, the amount needed for a year's pay plus icons) for something else for now and if I resolve to pay up my journal later I still have time.

It depends on how they handle the situation in the long run. Some of those I've seen, whether I agree with it or not, ought to have been suspended. Others, like the survivor support and some role play journals, should never have been touched. If they continue the trend, I'm likely to take my journal elsewhere. I'd like to see more reason attached to the suspensions other than "Eh, the interest looked offensive".

My answers would seem to indicate that I ain't goin' nowhere nohow, but the thing is, I set this journal up with the intention of it being a writer's blog--intended to be read by other people as I worked on getting a career, however small, going. If people leave LJ en masse--which might not be now or because of this, but the possibility still stands--I'm going to have to either leave and go where the people are. It'll probably involve mirrors and RSS feeds, but if too many people leave LJ, I might end up using a different service as my primary client to streamline things--use the service where whatever readership is centered.

Please, LJ. Don't drive us away to MySpace. Nobody, and I mean nobody, wants that.

Even though I currently have a Basic account I decided to answer some of the paid LJ questions, since I have in the past two years had a paid account. I actually had upgraded to a Plus account just to keep my 15 icons, but I dropped out of it after reading about this debacle and how Wfi is targeting Six Apart regarding its advertisers.

So what I'm trying to say is that maybe you shouldn't advise Basic and Plus users not to answer the third question as past Basic and Plus users could have been paying customers to LJ and are potential sources of revenue to Six Apart who are turned off of livejournal because of these heavy-handed suspensions.

Presently my account is paid up through next February/March; by the time it comes up for renewal again, this thing will (hopefully) have all blown over. I was debating buying a permie account when they went on sale in June, but I'm still on the fence about it depending on how much it costs and if I can spare the expense.

I think its still way early in this thing to be making any big decisions, boycott-wise. I'd rather wait until we a) hear something definitive from Six Apart regarding their side of this situation and what their plans are (if any) to do about it, or b) see that Six Apart has done nothing and continued to delete journals and comms without investigating WfI's allegations.
