I'm going to take a wild guess that most of you are thinking more about Homecoming, less about class today, so I hope I'm not going to make you suffer too much. We're just watching a video here and then we're going outside for the experiment -- the Diet Coke-Mentos eruption."

He cued up a DVD player at the front of class. "This is an episode of Mythbusters showing the science behind what we're going to do. "And now, you get to do this yourself. Grab a buddy and we're going outside. Pick up the ball and toss it down the lane hitting all the pins." As Ronon spoke, he demonstrated, failing to use the finger holes in the ball as he sent it barreling down the lane, managing a strike for his trouble. "You break a finger, see Hannibal.
It was the first meeting of the Young Entrepreneurs Club and, even with everything buzzing in Turtle's head for homecoming, she was ready to go and very excited and even a little bit nervous, although things like this should be old hat for her. She waited until everyone came into the classroom before greeting them.

"Hello! Thank you all for joining Young Entrepreneurs! Hopefully, we'll have a very good semester and make a little money, because that's what entrepreneuring is all about! Today, we're going to introduce ourselves by way of one of the most important items an entrepreneur can have: a business card. If you already have a business card, great! If you don't, there's some sturdy paper, pen, and markers, and you can make a makeshift one, with your name, what sort of business you're really interested in, or anything else you'd like to include. Mine has a little Turtle & Canary emblem in the corner, see? So let's take a few minutes to do that and then we'll just chat and stuff today!

"For next week, I'd like you all to think of lots of great ideas on what we can produce this semester to sell for the benefit of the club, okay?"

[[ ocd <strike>a'coming</strike> just got approved for a business start-up loan! ]]

The facts were these: Ned...had never run a club before. He was sure that fact was incredibly hard to tell but, yes, he'd never run anything even like a club before.

So, equipped with a cookbook and a pie (might as well bake one for the first club), he found his way to the classroom and gotten it set up as many hours of research had suggested. That was done.

He even wrote COOKING CLUB on the board just in case anyone got confused. You know, like Ned himself.

Once people had found their way into the classroom, Ned nervously stood up and said, "Um, hi. Some of you know me, some of you don't. I'm Ned and this is the cooking club. I did some research..." And he hoped no one laughed at him for that. "...and the first club meeting should generally just be an icebreaker so...let's just do names and favorite food. You can add in cooking experience, if you want to and if you have it. Otherwise, we'll just do something nice and easy to get to know each other."

He cleared his throat. "Anyway, yeah, I'm Ned and my favorite food is pie, obviously. I'm partial to apple pies. I've been cooking since I was about nine, mostly desserts but I'm pretty good with any recipes. So...anyone else?"

[Delicious OCD is <s>a coming</s> up!]

Leadership, Thurs Period 1, Class 6 (10/9/08)

"You can tell people what to do but they're not necessarily going to agree with you," Nathan said. "In order to get that agreement you need to motivate them."

Nathan passed around handouts. "A guy named Maslow had the idea that we do things based upon where we are in a hierarchy of needs. At the very bottom are basic physical needs such as food and sleep. Going up the list are things like security, relationships, and self-esteem. At the top we have self-actualization, which is being the best we can be. It's worth noting that we don't achieve that level so much as strive for it.

"Putting this in terms of leadership, we have two takeaways. One: people aren't going to follow you on a level 3 need when they're down on level 1. In other words, someone who's starving isn't going to be too interested in putting their energy into trying to make new friends. How many of you have a difficult time learning before you have your morning cup of coffee?

"Two: if you figure out where they are in their needs, you can explain what you want in those terms. For instance, if we make new friends then we can work together to get food. If we fund our schools then our communities will grow stronger. And, a popular one come election time, if you vote for me I'll make sure our country doesn't come under nuclear attack.

"For today's class exercise I'd like you to get together in the following groups and use the hierarchy of needs to figure out how to motivate others to help you out with a problem," Nathan said. "The problem is that your country's economy is failing. You believe you have the solution, but you need to get people to agree with you and follow along in order to fix things. Don't worry about what your solution is, I'm not expecting anyone here to be an expert economist - well anyone besides Turtle - " Nathan grinned. "For the purpose of the class just focus on how this applies to the hierarchy of needs. What needs do people have because of a government that lacks money? How can a leader talk about those needs in a way that motivates people to believe in the solution?

"As always, I'm here if you have any questions."

Group 1
Momoko Akatsutsumi
Dor
Andrew Wiggin
Jaina Solo
Joan Girardi

Group 2
Evey Hammond
Hinata Hyuuga
Tony Foster
Ben Skywalker
Agnes Nitt

Group 3
Summer Roberts
Andros
Bender
Teyla Emmagan
Lucas Scott

Group 4
Alex Drake
Meg Powers
Teddy Altman
Tabitha-Ruth Wexler

[ooc: OCD is up!]

"Welcome back," Miss Elizabeth Bennet smiled. "As you recall, at the end of last week's class, I asked you to obtain a copy of either Randolph Park or Amelia, were you able to do so, or both, if you were particularly inclined. Rest assured that there is no punishment for not reading either, and I shall try to keep this discussion on a level which all of you will be able to follow.

"To begin. Why did I ask you to read these two works? Both are by author Jane Austen. Austen was from my own time, and her works largely involved the social strata with which she was most familiar. The upper class, though not the aristocracy, and the lives of women. For a genteel woman, there was but one goal: to marry, and to marry well. This may sound callous or frivolous to you, but please do consider that the situation of women in those times was not at all like modern society. Women were not to work; such was unseemly. If your family did not have wealth, you must marry someone with enough income to support the both of you. Do remember that those gentlemen could probably afford to be choosy; they would seek out wives with influential social connections or fortunes of their own. A single misstep in society could remove one's chances altogether.

"There, the backdrop. And now, the tales. Jane Austen once wrote that the lead character of her next novel would be, 'a heroine that no one but myself will much like.' She was speaking of Amelia Forrester, the girl for whom Amelia was named. Amelia was one of Austen's few heroines who did not have monetary concerns; she was well-off enough that she might marry anyone she fancied, and she fancied all she saw very little. She amused herself by making matches of those eligible men and women she saw around herself, though some were successful and others, miserable failures. At novel's end, she finds herself confronted with the idea that she has been in love, for a very long time, with her brother-in-law, Walter Bishop, while scarce realizing it to herself. The two are happily paired as the other matches untangle themselves. It is easily Miss Austen's lightest work: playful, coquettish, and somewhat inconsequential.

"Having said that, Miss Austen was quite wrong. Her audience largely embraced Amelia. They found her charming, and the work equally so. She is, of course, self-indulgent, but she seems earnest in her concerns for her friends and loved ones, and moved by a genuine desire to do good. Perhaps she's forgivable in that she seems terribly young. Many of her faults may smooth themselves out, with time. For whatever reason, Austen herself was not Amelia's only defender.

"Austen's quote is particularly fascinating when viewed in the context of another work of hers, Randolph Park. Randolph Park is her most divisive work. It is the tale of a young Fern Prince, who lives in a lower-class home in the city, and whose aunts decide to 'rescue' her and teach her good breeding and hope to make a fair match for her. They treat her somewhat contemptuously, always reminding her of her place -- which is, of course, decidedly beneath the Wooster cousins with whom she now lives. Fern is lonely, mistreated, and longs for the home she once knew. However, Fern has been told that she must be grateful, and grateful she is: quiet, loyal, and never wishing to disturb anyone else's peace for her own sake of mind.

"Why do I mention Randolph Park here? Quite simply, because Fern was a heroine that very few but Miss Austen much liked. Her demeanor is sweet, but she never stands for herself. She is pious, earnest, and sincere; she does what is right, and blessings eventually come to her. Many find her to be too timid, and wish she would display herself to have a spine. Many find her faith grating, in that it seems Randolph Park is a world of sinners and saints. Saints are rewarded, sinners are not, and one category can never cross to the other. Randolph Park is less a satire than a morality tale.

"Lest you think this a simple matter of time changing how a work is viewed -- of modern society viewing a heroine through its empowered lens and not seeing the reality of the social structures of the past -- Austen's very mother called Fern 'insipid.' However, there is something to be said for the way society has changed our priorities, and how tastes may change.

"Many of you have read one or both of these books. What is your interpretation? More importantly: how could Jane Austen be so very far off about the works she herself wrote?"

(OOC: I wrote up a meta-ing for the names of the major characters in the two books, so we wouldn't keep tripping over each other in inventing them. You can find that here.)

"The kind you play against an opponent, rather than relying on luck, or the skills of people or animals other than yourself, simply because they rely on on the kind of skill sets that it would be frowned upon for me to teach you." As opposed to teaching them to play cards, yes.

"However," he continued. "The game is not stud, nor baccarat, nor Texas Hold'em. Instead you will be merely cutting the cards, since today, I'm going to be teaching you about bluffing, which is one of the most important skills a gambler, or anyone else for that matter can possess."

Bond then went on to explain bluffing as it applied to poker, and some of the ways you could pick up on if your opponent was bluffing or not, displaying a remarkable poker face the entire time. "Now, I want you all to pair off, and each of you will pick a card from the deck, I then want you to bluff your opponent as to the value of your card, betting on who has the higher value. "Procreation," he said finally, "is a divine gift. Sex is not inherently evil or sinful. When two people join together within the bonds of wedlock, they not only experience the joy of exploring the bodies God has given them but they also have a chance to create new life."

"Each of you began as a collection of cells barely large enough to be visible to the naked eye and now look at you! But this is a miracle we can understand. "Meet the Hulk. Horrible doses of radiation do not always kill; sometimes they turn you into an incredibly strong, tough being with the intellect of a tantrum-prone two-year-old. But I would not take the risk. The Hulk also poses a problem of mass I will not get into at this time. Curiously, the angrier the Hulk gets, the stronger he gets; this perhaps is tied to adrenaline production. No one really understands his biology. He can break tanks and support mountains on his back.
If any of the members arrived at the originally scheduled time, they would find a note on the classroom door:

Meeting postponed until 5, due to cheerleading try-outs. Sorry for an inconvenience! Come back in an hour and bring any instruments with you if you have any. --Chad.

And so when five o'clock rolled around and try-outs were over, Chad and his guitar and his naked cat were there in the classroom, ready to get the first meeting started. He waited until a good amount of people had filed in before saying anything, although he strummed on his guitar a little while waiting.

"Sorry about the hold-back," he started out, "but cheerleading's moved back to Wednesday, so today's the only time there'd be a conflict. For those of you who don't know me, I'm Yasutora Sado, and everyone calls me Chad, and I started this club because...well..."

There was a bit of a pause; he thoughtfully strummed an upscale on his guitar.

"Music's important. It's kind of one of the most basic, visceral expressions of the human experience. Except maybe, like, sex or something. But, anyway, yeah. I don't have a lot of big plans for this club, just to get together, talk about music, play music, jam a bit, recommend music, maybe do some performances or something, and I don't know. You guys are just as much in charge of it as I am. So let's at least get to know each other today? Maybe, if you brought an instrument or like to sing, do a little experimental jamming?"

He shrugged. "And stuff."

[[ ocd <strike>on the way~</strike> is now rocking in the free world! ]]

Hoshi waited for everyone to arrive before starting. "Lulu had something come up, so you guys get to deal with me instead," she began. "Today, we're going to be cooking with rice. It's a pretty basic staple found in cuisines all over the world, so it's always a good thing to have on hand. You can make so many things with it, from arroz con pollo to biryani to congee. We're going to make something as little less exotic today, but if you want any recipes, let me know."

She passed out a handout before continuing. "Butternut squash risotto is great at this time of year. Squash looks like a scary ingredient to work with, but all you really have to do is cut it in half, remove the seeds, peel the skin and dice it. If you've carved a pumpkin before, then you can handle squash. With the risotto, the key is to thoroughly coat the rice with oil and cook it a bit before slowly adding the stock. I'd suggest you work in pairs so you can divide the work up."

Hands-On Art, Class #6, Period 1

"Welcome back, guys," Lily greeted the class once they'd arrived. "Hope everyone had a nice weekend. Plus Monday. There's really no good opening on a Tuesday, you know? Anyway, today we're working on landscapes, so I hope you all brought in your pictures. Landscapes might be the simplest idea that's sometimes just really hard to actually do. It's not just 'draw this house and clouds and a sun' like you did in kindergarten, though I have seen a couple of kindergartners with some mighty fine talent in my time. No, you pretty much look outside and paint that. It's scenery. It's lakes and mountains and forests and trees. You got some experience the other week with the video and all the happy trees, so this is a good way to put those to use.

"And really, the reason this is harder than it looks is because the lakes and mountains and blah blah blah can be hard to get right, and if you're a perfectionist you're going to probably want to spend a lot of time wanting to just take your paintbrush and go like this to the canvas," Lily said, gesturing wildly with her arm. "Don't do that. I know it's hard to grade on artistic expression, but that's just sort of an emotional seizure and that'll knock you down a few points.

"So have fun, remember you can turn in anything from last week you still owe, and you don't need to bring anything in next week. Have at it."
