Astonishing X-Men from Joss Whedon:
**************************
She can't imagine him without his cigarettes. All of her memories of him seem to have cigarette smoke in them: the smell of his skin, his hair, all the little things that made him Wisdom all seem to have a curl of cigarette smoke attached, like a ghost of the sensations of the past.
She knows about being ghostlike, intangible. She knows about losing people she loves, believing them dead not just once, but over and over again, only to discover them alive after all. You reach a point after awhile where you can't let it get to you any more, where you start to harden yourself against the constant flow of "dead-alive-dead." The living and the dead become all the same, after awhile. She should be accustomed to change, to the idea of Wisdom as a non-smoker, to the fact that the eyepatch was just another con, like his death.
Now she knows Piotr's touch, the taste of him, as she dreamed that she would someday, back when she was very young and could dream of nothing else in this world, and yet the distinctive musk that she still remembers, and craves sometimes far more than she dares to notice, will always be colored with the taste of smoke.
