AboutThis community was created for fans who want to contribute to a good cause, and fans who just want that story/vid/icon they've always dreamed of. The idea was taken from ![[info]](http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/community.gif)
fan_the_vote, but instead of donating to political campaigns, you'll donate to independent charity organisations such as the ones listed below.
The procedure is simple: Fan #1 posts a challenge, such as "Please write me Heathers fic." Fan #2 replies with, "I'll write you a fic if you give X amount of money to X organisation." Fan #1 agrees. Obviously, you can do it the other way around too and offer to write/make vids etc. even if no challenge has been posted yet.
Remember that both parties are equally important! An offer or request without takers is a sad thing. Read through the posts and see if you can find anything to your liking!
I will not interfere with the amount of money you decide on, but it is absolutely prohibited to send money to individuals. All money must go to the charity organisations. If you have created a material item that cannot be shared online, you may request enough money to pay for the postal charges, but no more. Anyone caught trying to benefit financially from this community will be banned.
Please keep a civil tone in your posts and respect other people's fannish and political preferences. (No, we haven't had any trouble with flaming yet, but better safe than sorry.)
If you want to make a non-fannish request, such as "draw me a unicorn", you are of course welcome to do so.
Fic and art created for this community may be shared with others only if the creator and the person they were made for both agree to this. If you're unsure, always ask.
If you want to post your work once you're done, and the recipient agrees to this,fc_creations is the sister community of this one, and a good place to start. Posting there is voluntary - members may want to see your work, but unless they donated, it's a wish, not a right. Do not post fics and graphics in fandom_charity itself - such posts will be deleted!
If you see any unsuitable behaviour in this community, contact me at head_overheels @ hotmail.com and I'll deal with it. If you have any suggestions on ways the community could be improved, please do the same.

Amnesty International is an independent organisation fighting for internationally recognized human rights. It is well known for its work to stop censorship, torture and imprisonment of people due to political beliefs.
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent humanitarian medical aid agency committed to two objectives: providing medical aid wherever needed, regardless of race, religion, politics or sex and raising awareness of the plight of the people they help. (Info from their website.)
Human Rights Watch is an organisation dedicated to protecting the human rights of people around the world.
Save the Children is an organisation fighting for children's rights. It has programs for fighting HIV and natural disasters, educational programs, and more.
The International Committee of the Red Cross is an independent organisation protecting the victims of war and internal conflicts. See also the International Federation of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent, focusing on health, disaster management and promoting humanitarian principles.
Women's International League for Peace and Freedom is the world's oldest women's peace organisation. It's long-term goal is world peace. See also PeaceWomen Project.
Jubilee Debt Campaign fights to liberate poor countries from their financial debts to richer countries. See also Jubilee South and 50 Years is Enough.
Best Friends takes care of homeless pets, giving them away for adoption and encouraging owners to neuter their pets.
Katrina specific
For information on charities supporting victims to Hurricane Katrina, this list is a good start. Also check out this division into "good" and "bad" charities - you may not agree with the distinction, but in any case it gives some information about the basis for each charity.
If you're European, you might want to check out these German organisations.
You can also try out the LiveJournal communitiesfandom_aid_auct and blood_for_fic, the latter of which tries to get blood donations for the hurricane victims. If you're healthy and broke, this is a good option.

entrenous88 (who's God's gift to this community) is keeping a master list of all requests and offers concerning the victims of Katrina. Of those requests and offers, these are the ones without any takers so far. Do go there and see if there's anything that speaks to you!
