About Us
In this fast-paced world of electronic authorship, it's easy to get caught up in the mad rush of writing, posting, rolling around in comments, and writing some more. Along the way, often one very important step is left out for the sake of quantity. That step? Writing a more pornographic ending! Editing, of course.
That's where we step in. Every great author has a few amazing editors on her side (or well, really, the editors are behind her, looking over her shoulder and marking things with a red pen). Beta reading is the same, but within fandom, a great beta reader can do a lot more than just add a comma or fix what spell check refused to see as an error - a beta reader knows his or her fandom, its attendant plots, characters, arcs, and quirks. A beta reader also know the audience, as she is the audience. Thus, a beta reader can call an author on her errors in judgment as well as minor grammatical gaffs.
While most established fandoms and fic communities have resources for finding beta readers, we've created fandom_betas especially for those tricky transition periods when you, as an author, are trying to find your way into a new fandom and find yourself in need of a beta.
So we invite you to post your fic, look for a beta, and search our other handy resources for grammar tips, writing hints, and more screeching about comma use than you ever thought you'd hear outside your eighth grade English class.
