Sometimes....it's just kind of better to stick with cannon [Jul. 12th, 2009|08:47 pm]

stebia
[mood | confused]

Alright, drawing certain characters from series in your own designed outfits is a pretty fun thing to do. I mean heck, doesn't just about everyone do it? Especially in the ones that wear a different outfit in every episode? Of course. But, as for the series where the characters wear the same outfits in every episode, depending on what type of fanart you're doing, it would probably be a good idea to just leave them in their cannon outfits.

Your fanart was amazing. It had great colors, great style, just flat out really great picture. There's just one little thing that kind of bugs me about it. You see; in this series there are three main characters that wear the exact same clothing in every episode, and when drawing fanart of these characters, apparently, you had a dislike of the third characters outfit, so designed your own. This actually would have been okay, that is, if you didn't draw the first two characters in their original outfits.

I fully support drawing characters in your own designed stuff, however, it's a bit.....weird to look at a picture where the characters go "cannon, cannon, can- wait, what the heck?" What's even more...weird, is that you put said character (who by the way is 13) in a spandex bra and sexy choker. If said character has such a beef with wearing skirts, I would assume that she wouldn't feel anymore comfortable walking around wearing an actual bra. At the beach, sure. Anywhere else, ehh....no.

The outfit itself, really isn't that bad at all. It has a nice style to it, and if the character were older, I could actually almost picture them wearing it. I just think that drawing the other main characters in their cannon outfits, and then to have the last one not just.....doesn't really fit at all. If you're going to draw two of the characters in their cannon outfits, then you might as well draw the third one in their original outfit, whether you like it or not. Either that, or just draw all of the characters in your own original outfits.

This probably a completely pointless rant but....it was just bugging me.

Art trade communities and comments. [Jun. 30th, 2009|08:41 pm]

ayeayes
Well, this is more about "fanart" as in, art of other internet users' characters then it is about, fanart of characters from movies, shows, books, etc. I hope this still counts as on-topic.

So, I watch several art trade communities, and occasionally take part in some of the rounds. You know, those communities where every round, a bunch of people submit their characters, and then there's an "art shuffle" where everyone is e-mailed or PMed the character they have to draw. It's fun.

But it seems in almost all those communities, it's common that someone posts their pictures for the round, and the person they drew it for completely ignores it. If they posted it on DA or FA as well, I follow the link there, and see, oh, it's ignored there as well. Absolutely no feedback as to what the character's original creator thinks. In fact, no indication that the original creator has even seen it.

Now, I'm not just speaking for myself, I'd assume that anyone would want some sort of feedback. Even when I've scrolled through some older rounds, it frustrates me a bit to see someone's participation in an art trade go completely ignored.

WALL-E fandom, we need a talk... [Jun. 6th, 2009|08:05 pm]

babycharmander
I am not getting this. D%

I'm in the WALL-E fandom and I frequently search for WALL-E fanart on dA. Fanart is cool, and so are fancharacters. I love reading about good fancharacters and looking at pics of well-designed ones. The same goes for WALL-E-style "fanbots."

I do not understand the trend of fanbot designs that's been going around dA for a while though. I'm seeing a lot of fanbots that are just humans with robot names. I can understand humanizing a character... but if you only make a human version of your "fanbot" then what is the point of even making them a fanbot? oO; Why not just make it an original character if you're never going to come up with a robot design?

IMO part of the fun of making fancharacters for the WALL-E universe is coming up with robot designs. I know that's not everyone's idea of having fun, but still... if you're gonna make a fanbot at least design the robot form first so you can even CALL it a fanbot. Oo;

If you make a wallpaper, make it a WALLPAPER. 500x500 = NOT WALLPAPER.

Christ, even 600x800 doesn't really cut it anymore. If you want to make a pretty picture that's not wallpaper-sized, that's all cool and everything, but if it ISN'T a wallpaper, DON'T CALL IT ONE.

Vertically oriented image ≠ wallpaper, either. Maybe possibly in the world somewhere there's a monitor resolution that's more vertical than horizontal, but I've never heard of one, and I don't think anyone else has. Don't stick the word "wallpaper" on any ol' thing you make.

If I'm looking for a wallpaper, I want to get results that are actually wallpapers! D: Is this so hard?

Okay, you did a good job. But, really, can you admit that your source material, please? Especially since one of them is basically a flipped version of the art of a well known Kaiju artist on Deviantart.

And the other is a sketch of a well known kaiju model.

Just saying they're you doing a line test is just...dishonest.

Not really a fanart rant, but art rant at least [May. 1st, 2009|11:18 am]

stebia
[mood | lazy]

(as the title says; this isn't really a fanart rant. but still an art rant)

You. Yes you. I have something to say to you. Not too long ago, you faved one of my stamps on dA, and when anyone favs something of mine I always take a swing by their page, thus meaning, I took a swing by yours. While I was looking at your page I found that you posted a journal entry that made me laugh my ass off and facepalm at the same time. You see; half of this entry was you bitching that anime "is for no life mother-fuckers" and "gays with no life." You then proceeded to rant that people who draw anime have no talent, and are only popular because they draw anime. Not just fanart, but anime in general (and i actually agree a bit on this); after that you just threw in a bunch of random ranting and swearing. This of course, got you a bit of backlash; if somebody draws a lot of anime, but has no talent, then I doubt they would get that much attention.

Though, this is not what bothers me. Well, yes it does bother me, but it is also by no means uncommon when people say garbage like that. So when I see posts like yours I just turn, and walk away. But here's the thing I'm having trouble ignoring: you say that people that like to draw anime "have no life" "can't draw" and are "gays" "mother fuckers" and a bunch of other crap. If you hate anime, to the point where you put on your dA tagline that you hate anime, that is fine. But, if you're going to say this, it would be good not to have art like this in your gallery. That, my friend, is anime art. No matter how you slice it, that is anime art. All I have to do is look at the eyes to know it's anime art. Hell, you even do me the favor of putting all of your art under the anime/manga categories. And would you look at that, your own avatar is anime. If you hate anime and think it should die, then that's just peachy. But don't go spewing a bunch of hate speech about how people who draw it are "total gays with no talent and no life" and then tell us that we need to be more "unique" when your gallery is over the brim with anime art. Yes your art is nice, but it is anime. It may look like has a bit of your own unique snowflake style in it, but it is still anime.

I like your art, but considering the way you act, I'd rather go look at art that a troll whipped up in 5 minutes.

Petite she ain't, guys [Mar. 20th, 2009|02:00 pm]

Okay.

I am a Samus Aran fan. She's my hero and I think she's the most badass lady in all of gaming. Okay, so she's not the most stable person in Nintendo's lineup and doesn't strike me as a particularly pleasant person to be around, but you know what? Blows up Space Pirates, doesn't afraid of anything, and befriends Pikachu and baby Metroids. Thus: fanart search, huzzah!
...Yeah, you can guess how that went. )

I don't even like Naruto. So yes, it's going to irk me when you say my pokemon gijinkas look like characters from Naruto.

Sadly, this is not the first time this has happened. =A=

Yes, another humanization rant... [Feb. 28th, 2009|11:20 pm]

babycharmander
[mood | weirded-out]

Okay, I can understand human-ifying a nonhuman character. I personally think it's neat to see how characters look as different species.

But... when you human-ify a nonhuman, is it REALLY that hard to make them at least SOMEWHAT resemble their original form? Obviously there's a lot of things that the nonhuman has that the human won't have, but even so... turning a giant, boxy robot with a deep voice into a slim, sexy human in his early 20s?

WHAT?

Dude, you're basically drawing a human and slapping the character's name on it.

What worries me is that when I look up fanart of this character on dA, it's ALL human-ified versions of the character, with VERY few pictures that try to make the character resemble their robot form. I have yet to find a single piece of fanart of the character in their original form. Granted, it's an obscure character, but even so... not a SINGLE picture of the character in his original robot form? WHAT?

Mechagodzilla does not have hair.

Creating and collecting slews of anti-yaoi, anti-slash and anti-Twilight icons does not make you look cool. It just makes you a bigger target for the louder fanbrats you claim to hate.

You are a joke who makes real goths look bad.

You need to get over yourself.

STOP following everyone you see on your DA tracker to their page and asking them if they liked what they saw. It smacks of desparation for attention.

OMG Adolf Hitler's so KAAWWAAAIIII!!!! [Feb. 24th, 2009|01:47 pm]

[mood | uncomfortable]

I HATE it when fantards bishify real people from history, especially the evil ones like Adolf Hitler or infamous serial killers like Ted Bundy. It sickens me to no end when they made animu fanart of them. (Note: search for them at Deviantart or Google and you could find them.)

While I could understand some people's fascination with those evil people, but bishifying or chibifying them really crossed the line. I don't find it cute or funny to see them in various yaoi situations. Even more disturbing, there are even a few pictures where the fangirls draw themselves becoming their girlfriends or marrying them. O_O

Sometimes fantards scare me!

On concrit, a rant in two parts [Feb. 19th, 2009|01:53 pm]

rhyssafireheart
[mood | aggravated]

Part I.

Why is it so impossible to get concrit?  I mean, yes I do my art for myself because *I* want to do it, but when I post it up for others to see, damn right I want some feedback.  It's a form of whoring oneself out that all artists do (to a certain degree).

But the thing is, I'm fine if only a few people ever comment on something.  It's not quantity that I'm looking for, not really.  But I'd like something more than "That's cool lookin'!"  I know I can improve.  I can look at my own work and see the glaring mistakes in it.  What I want to know is if others see those same mistakes as I do.  For example, I did a fanart piece of Sakura Haruno from Naruto and though it turned out all right.  The concrit I got though was that others thought her chin looked too masculine.  I couldn't see that, even after the concrit, but based on what others said, I attempted to fix the (perceived) problem.

That was good concrit.  Why is it so rare?

Part II.

And this is related to part I - why do so few people respond when given concrit?  I've done several manga page colorings for both Naruto and Bleach, and I've posted them in a few forums that are appropriate to the genre, along with dozens of other artists.  I realized that people aren't going to look at my work if all I do is post it up and not take part in the community, so I started responding to other artists threads as well.  I'll generally that I like something, or felt that such-and-such looked good here, but that this part bothers me because of X reason.

I will (almost) never completely rip someone for a bad piece of art because that's not how I was taught to do it.  I was taught that you tell someone what you like about their work, point out what you see wrong with it without being confrontational (you know, saying "for me this is..." or "in my opinion..").  And yet, I see plenty of artwork posted that badly needs some concrit and everyone is posting just saying "Nice job!!!"  I realize that everyone sees things differently and maybe they don't go through the same processes in giving concrit that I do.  I understand that.  But there is some art that is blatantly bad or just not good and it will still get a "good job!" in response after response.  In fact, most of the responses I see from some posters are nothing more than a series of "good job" from thread to thread.

Am I that outdated or is the idea of concrit dead?  Do people just not want to hear anything bad about their personal babies that they spent simply minutes on, or is there something else going on?  Encouragement is vital to growing and getting better, but isn't there a point where the constant congrats just become meaningless?  It's getting to the point where I don't feel like bothering anymore because my work gets no good responses and any concrit I offer is just wasted.  I'd like to think it's something I'm doing wrong, but I'm not sure I really can use that excuse.

A campaign against Damien Hirst? [Feb. 18th, 2009|09:04 pm]

my_art_space

A collage by Cartrain.

The story involving Damien Hirst and his copyright infringement allegations against a 16 year old street artist-- known as Cartrain-- has taken a twist. Several influential UK artists have joined forces in order to defend Cartrain. In doing so they have targeted the contradictory nature of Hirst’s decision to seek legal action against Cartrain. After all, Damien Hirst has allegedly infringed on copyright himself-- in one case he settled out of court due to copyright infringement allegations.

The battle charge against Damien Hirst has been spearheaded by Jamie Reid -- widely known for creating the Sex Pistol‘s ‘God Save the Queen‘ cover art, Jimmy Cauty -- a former member of KLF, and Billy Childish -- co-founder and former member of the Stuckists. Needless to say, they want others to join the front lines.

Hey, I was pointed in the general direction of this comm and since I feel a grave injustice has been brought down upon me and my taste in artwork...well, regardless I'll still try to keep this civilized.

And I'll keep this behind a cut because it gets long. )

(*sighs*) I would've been a lot more RAEG and screaming and obscenities, but I have other, less public means through which to vent, instead of at the public at large. So hopefully I have channeled my RAEG into something coherent and productive.

Thank you.

Inspired by a conversation I had last night with a clasmate... as well as one from over a year ago. [Dec. 10th, 2008|08:27 am]

avi_via_vai
Not really fanart specific, but I'm sure we all get this from time to time.

Yes, I draw like this. (Sort of NSFW, because of implications.)

That does not mean I don't know how to draw (or really in this case, paint) like this. (NSFW, even though there is no nipple.)

Being able to do the latter fairly well enables me to do the former well also, believe it or not.

So when you feel that your [life] drawing teacher is teaching you to draw "differently" then before, they're really not. A [life] drawing class is about drawing from observation. If you're drawing the model with legs 50 miles long because that's "how you draw" you're doing it wrong; all your teacher is trying to do is teach you how to draw accurately. Because that's what drawing from observation is all about.

Not to mention, one really needs to learn all the rules before they can be properly broken. This includes drawing in a style that is [inspired by] anime/manga. My stuff isn't perfect, but I'm learning everyday, and there's only one way for me to learn that I've found works. But then everyone is different right? >_>

P.S. It will always bother me when I see people who've gone to/who are going to art school and draw in an anime/manga style and don't gesture draw. At all. And then wonder why my stuff has so much movement.

bit of a weird rant, but it's been nagging at me [Nov. 30th, 2008|04:03 am]

starfalls
[mood | tired]

(Apologies if this rant is incredibly disjointed. I've had roughly six hours of sleep in the last two days.)

ATTN: Pokémon fandom. Specifically, those of you who enjoy the 'gijinka' (aka humanized/Pokémorph/etc) fad that's been around forever. More specifically, those of you who specialize in legendary Pokémon.

The vast majority of legendaries? They are genderless. They are neither male or female. The only exceptions to this are Latias (female), Latios (male), Cresselia (female), and Heatran (can be either). Although, if you look at some of the spinoff games like Mystery Dungeon 2, some of the others are referred to as "he" or "she" (for example, the shiny Celebi in MD2 is referred to as female). But whatever. Point is, in the main series games, they generally have no gender.

This is not exactly a problem in and of itself - it's perfectly fine to draw the genderless ones as one or the other. And in general - fanfiction, fanart, etc - it's easier to depict them as one or the other. There's not much in the way of gender-ambiguous pronouns, and using "it" just seems kind of wrong. Drawing them as male or female isn't the problem. Personally, I like drawing Dialga as a male, as I'm rather fond of my gijinka design.

However, uhhhh, I'm not "wrong" for depicting it as male instead of female. I'm well aware that a good portion of you (or at least in the little niche I've somehow found myself wedged into on FF.Net) see Dialga as female and Palkia as male, especially when shipping the two of them together (and let's not even get into slash, since that's completely beside the point). I've seen you reason it as "Palkia is bulkier so it gets to be the guy". I've seen you reason it as "Diamonds are a girl's best friend, Dialga = diamond, lol Dialga's the chick". I don't care if that's how you see it. It's your vision, do whatever with it.

I, however, see it the other way around. This is my opinion. Just because the majority of you in this little "niche" see it as female, doesn't mean I have to. I am not "wrong" for having a differing opinion. I am not "wrong" for preferring a male Arceus. I am not "wrong" for enjoying the occasional femslash variant of Darkrai/Cresselia. And so on and so forth.

Augh. As much as I love this little niche in fandom, it's really kind of annoying at times!
