A brief story I unofficially wrote for my creative writing class; I included it in an e-mail inviting my classmates to come out to a bar for goodbye drinks tonight. This story is one hundred percent true.

I don't have a title for it, though. )

I watched GoF again tonight. So some things. A little angst, a little silly. I still want somebody to write Crouch-as-Moody/unsuspectingfemalestudent porn for me. Because I don't want to have to be the one to do it.

Ten things about my fanfiction.

10. Generally you have to look pretty hard to find it. Honestly, I'm not half as open about my writing as I used to be. The more I know, the less I want to write, and sometimes it takes a real kick in the pants to find it (or make me write it).

9. It's in either one of two styles: sharp and tight where every word counts and generally with darker themes (see "Variations" or the Remus/Ginny stuff), or looser, bubblier, tongue-in-cheek (see "Adjustment" or the Morag/Natalie). I keep a tight rein on my dark stuff, but I definitely have a different voice when I write lighter stuff.

8. If it's sharp, tight prose, then it's usually about war. Yay, war!

7. If it's a war fic, somebody has to have some sort of physical change. This can be cutting off your hair (Hermione in "Variations", Ginny in the Remus/Ginny, or, if you're real old school, Lee in my Marcus/Lee for [info]bubosquared), dyeing your hair (which I've mostly kept to Weasleys), or non-lightning-bolt scars (Draco had a scar on his lip in the Marcus/Lee stories).

6. There are a lot more hints than outright statements. I'm a big fan of subtle hints and letting things go unsaid rather than saying, "Oh, by the way? They totally did it, and now she's pregnant."

5. I have a particular aesthetic for my war stories, which I actually mentioned in my first [info]false_hellebore post -- the idea that, even though the war is the "future" for the characters as we currently know them, it's a throwback to the 1920s for me.

4. I mentioned this in my Mistletoe Magic recap post, but I'm a semi-retired slasher. I don't get my kicks out of slashing people left and right anymore. However, I do understand the appeal of making pairings work out that wouldn't necessarily be the first to jump to mind. And I tend to choose unconventional pairings just because I do like to think, "Okay, how would these two go together?" They do tend to be m/f couples, like Remus/Ginny or Draco/Luna (they are my secret OTP, after Harry/Luna) or Pansy/Theodore. Daphne Greengrass/Lucius Malfoy. Crazy! (Confession time: all of my Slytherin female characters would totally go after Lucius if given the opportunity. And so would I.)

3. Plot? What plot? Which isn't to say that I write smut. In fact, I'm not all that good at smut, as I tend to be more subtle than "his meaty member thrust into her quivering sex", which is really kind of ridiculous and hilarious and gross... kind of like real sex is (if you're doing it right, anyway)! Anyway, what I really meant to say is that my stories rarely have any plot. I'd rather get into the characters and find out about them versus moving them from Point A to Point B and discovering Important Thing that leads to Climax and then Denouement. If I want plot, I'll read the series. If I want character development, particularly out of the more obscure ones, I'll dig into that on my own.

2. I do like having things tie together. I like approaching things from different characters' angles and perspectives, which is what I'm focusing on in my creative writing project this year. I guess it comes from the background I came into fandom with, which was from the RPG angle. But I like saying, "Okay, this story happened in this war, and this applies here, and that applies there, and Ron is dead in all of them." (Jeanne's War Corollary: Ron always dies.)

1. I lean to the third person point of view because, uh, the actual series is written in limited third person, and, even though I come from the RPG angle, it's weird to come in at a first person perspective for something that is so definitely limited third person. And because I tend to write things so tightly, I try to limit what the reader gets out of it. My characters don't reveal more than they should, but they do reveal things if you look closely.

And that's about that. I'm surprised I got ten, because I barely write anything anymore, unfortunately.

So lately I haven't been feeling like writing (I've been knitting instead). But I'll give it a shot.

As for the Unfortunate Events, I'm still trying to digest the latest book (it just came out on Tuesday). I think I need to do a full re-read of the books before I can really start writing anything for that.

One. Beginnings. 197 words. )

I've gone and joined [info]fanfic100.

I'm already writing every week for the Kidd, but you know, I think this (fanfic100) will be a lot more interesting than anything I could put out for Nanowrimo this year. I'm going to try to get anywhere from five to ten drabbles done a week, but maybe there'll be more if I feel it. That means it could take me anywhere from three to six months to get it done (hah!) but I figure... it'll probably go a lot faster than that.

the first official entry [16 Sep 2005|11:03pm]

I've been thinking about why my post-war Harry Potter writings, particularly focusing on the younger Death Eaters and their sympathetics, always have such a 1920s-according-to-Fitzgerald flair. What is it that makes me want to write about girls in white dresses, wearing strings of pearls with dark bobbed hair and red lipstick? The Death Eaters holding extravagant parties in old mansions and laughing over their victory?

I think partially because the 1920s were about the post-war boom -- the men came home, damaged but pretending everything was okay, and things were riding high. They'd just come out winning (at least in America -- they jumped in at the end to win; everyone else had much heavier losses), and everything seemed perfect. But when you look back at it now, you know that there's going to be a hard time ahead for all of them; the happiness isn't going to last forever. The modern reader knows that in 1929 the stock market crashes and everything sinks into economic depression until (surprise!) war again. But the characters don't seem to realize that.

I know that, in my writings, the Death Eaters' victory can only be temporary. They are on top now, but they will not go unpunished for their deeds in the first (or is it second or third? if Grindelwald was the first, and Voldemort 1970s-80s was the second...?) war. There's loss and destruction and the "bad guys" win the first time, but you know that there will be triumph, there will be victory, and the "good people" will win, but there are dark times ahead for everyone, no matter their loyalties.

And then there's the whole element of Jay Gatsby, and the lying and the falsities of society; the different tricks and traps that are laid, and how you can get ahead in life by pretending you're someone other than James Gatz, by pretending you're not of the blood you were born. New money and old money, new blood and old blood. The layers of pureblood society... I can only imagine. The different sides of the lake, except there really is no way to get across.

The final element, though, that comes into my writings isn't from post-WWI. It's post-WWII. One of my favorite short stories by J.D. Salinger is "Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut", where the former sweetheart of Walt Glass describes their relationship, and how he died, and while she never really says that she's unhappy with her life, there's a definite air of melancholy and loss to her. And that sort of wistfulness, that "what might have been, had things been different", is something that I also add in.

Yep.
