FaithFAQ update [07 Aug 2004|12:49am]

Volunteers Wanted

We still need help.  I have put a notice on the current website asking for help.  Eventually, I might post on R+F and ask again.  Feel free to post it yourself, if you desire -- on R+F or interfaith communities online.  We really need more volunteers contributing to this, especially in the area of writing copy.

If you haven't already claimed a religion to write on, please post now and claim one (I'll let you know if there's any issues with it).  If you claimed one already and haven't finished (or started), please work on it?    It's not that long and I would really like to get this up as soon as possible.

Development

The "new" FaithFAQ, as it stands now, looks like this. As you can see, we are missing a lot of information.  I am working on doing statistics as we speak.  We still need: descriptions of history/beliefs for all the religions, FAQ for many, statistics for many, expansion of the recommended reading for most (some more than others).  Feel free (beg, beg) so offer any of these: sources, links, books, ideas, commentary, anything.

To save time, I compacted a lot of categories that had very little information on them into a few general categories.  Namely, this one and this one.  Eventually, I hope to make a seperate page for every entry on the title bar, but until then... entries without their own page link back to one of these two pages.

I added a "hot issues" page.  Currently, I just have listed some issues.  I'm not sure where we'll go with that.  Maybe a discussion forum?  Not sure.  It could be essays in the future... but I have reservations about that.  No offense to Shawn, but I really don't want to end up like EqualBilt or whatever his URL is.  Any ideas are welcome.  This section might eventually be removed if we don't think of a really good relevant place for it.

I'm going to start cleaning up some of the language on the questions and answers.  Some of it is really sarcastic, which is great for R+F... but not so great of an image for a budding interfaith site.  And just in case you're curious: the original R+F FAQ will be saved.  And placed somewhere.  I wish I still had the very original one.

Emails

As you can see from the contact page, I want all writers to have their own email address so readers can contact you.  I will make this address a forwarder; it will forward to a mailbox you already have... any one you like.  The person emailing you will not know your real address unless you choose to reply.  Please reply with your first name and the box address you wish it to forward to (all addressed will be yourname@faithfaq.com) so I can set you up.  You may choose to give out this forwarding address for other purposes, too.

Critique

I have put up my written copy on the about page for FaithFAQ's goals and history.  Please critique it if you feel the need... suggestions/criticism welcome.

Claim your sections! [16 Jun 2004|11:19pm]

ozzisme

The new page is now up at www.faithfaq.com/temp.  Have a look if you'd like.

Basic beliefs/history text needs written for each religion

Some sections need FAQs and all of them need editing

I have recommended reading for some of them, and it needs to be put up.  For some, I have none.

If anyone wants to claim the beliefs/history main page for any specific faith, let me know.  I'd like to get those pages up as soon as possible, but of course that depends on our writers.  Hopefully by the end of summer.

If any of your read this journal, please drag your friends here.  A lot of people contacted me about helping but never friended this journal.  Get them, too.  It's summer.  I'm fairly certain everyone is out of school now.

Working on Menu/Topics [08 Jun 2004|05:29pm]

ozzisme

The menu for the website will be a top navigational bar menu, with drop down links.  To the left is the working categories and sub-categories... black will be the main heading, grey will refer to the drop down menu.

Can anyone think of any major religions I left off?  I'm not doing individual pages for sub-sects or all the various pagan religions, but we'll make sure to include links and whatnot if someone is interested in something more specific than "Neo-Paganism" or whatever.  If they aren't sure where to go, there will be the search feature so they can search the site either way.  Can you think of any that are popular enough to warrant exception?  I think maybe Wicca should get its own category simply because of the volume of them online.

Also, each religion will split into:

  • Introduction (Beliefs/History)
  • Frequently Asked Questions
  • Statistics and Misc Info
  • Further Information (books/links)

I don't think I'll put these splits on the menu, though. Too many sub-categories gets distracting.

Any suggestions on organisation past this?  Rewording suggestions?  More subcategories for "Misc"?  More for "general"?  I was thinking of putting "Religious Mysticism" under "General" since it's so popular but can encompass a variety of religions.

Also, Jon is going to be in charge of a section on essay submissions; what we'll do is post a topic once every so often (the goal is one a month, but we'll probably do one every 4 or 6 months until we get more hits) and people from various religions can write in an send in a short essay on that topic.  We'll "publish" the best/more researched.  He'll be in charge of coordinating that, including arranging a review board to go over submissions.

If you haven't joined this community yet and want to participate, please do.

... and another thing... [29 Apr 2004|02:26pm]

ozzisme

Oh!

If any of you OWN any religion-related photos and would like to "donate" them to the site, it would be appreciated.  I have a limited supply of religion images from photos.com that I am legally allowed to use because I have a subscription to their website.  But the photos are very limited, especially if we're looking for specific things.

This means: only photos you have taken yourself (or own the rights to).  This is important; we can't just rip images off google or scan them out of books to use.

Working on Layout [29 Apr 2004|02:22pm]

ozzisme

Okay, we're not going to start writing for awhile... but for those of you lurking, we need to work on a way to order the site.  The page layout will be similar to how it is now (with some of the classifications split, like "Eastern Faiths"), but there will be more than just the FAQ and recommended reading... it will have multiple pages under each religion.  Working ideas subpages that I have now are:

  • Introduction
  • Beliefs Overview
  • Basic History
  • Statistics/Misc Info
  • FAQ (similar to what it is now)
  • Further Information (recommended books/links)

I was thinking that on the introduction page, which each menu will link to, it'll have (of course) very basic introduction to the religion, and then links to the above pages (or they can click through them in succession).  Something like this.  Any other ideas?  Comments?

I'm thinking maybe stats and the faq should be combined, but I don't know yet.  We'll see on the imput from everyone else.

Lastly: if you know anyone who might want to help on this project and is either good at research or knows a decent amount about the topic, please link them to the community info.  We have about seven volunteers right now but I'm pretty sure we can stir up more... at the very least for the comment/critiquing if they can't write copy.

The domain has been progated and the website is currently up (though it's the same thing found at the old URL right now).

More updates to come.

Also! [25 Apr 2004|07:39pm]

ozzisme

Please read the community info as well as the post below.  Also: new posters must be approved before posted access is granted.  This is to prevent spammers, which livejournal gets a lot of nowadays.

Some basic information about the site for those of you that don't really pay attention: The current FAQ page is found at http://www.homiegfunk.com/RF.  This is a subdirectory of my current homepage.  Not the page place for a serious website.  So, I purchased the domain name faithfaq.com, though I intend for us to elaborate it past a simple FAQ.  Right now the domain is propagating; I will move the current FAQ to that URL when it is ready.

We will begin working on copy text probably around June.  Until then, feel free to suggest websites/books/whatever (rules on doing so in the community info).

Hi Everyone! [25 Apr 2007|05:52pm]

ozzisme

Thank you for responding to my post.

I want things to be clear from the start, so this is an overview of my plans with how this will work.  Feel free to post comments.

What I'm aiming for shouldn't take mass amounts of time (as some of us are working and going to school this summer, too). Work should be pretty evenly split up, and it shouldn't require you to work any time other than when you feel like it (no chat rooms, no unreasonable deadlines, etc).  This is a volunteer effort, so it should be convenient.

What I think I'm going to do (and suggestions are welcome), is have individual people write smaller sections of copy, then we'll post it here and everyone can post commentary/critiques on each other.  I will be the ONLY editor so we don't have battles over that.  However, I'll go by majority vote on debated issues so my biases don't influence things.  We can use polls here to have such votes.  I'm really not sure it'll need much editing after all the critiques.   Just insertion in the layout and uploading, which I'll do since it's my FTP space.

I think that will effectively eliminate bias while still being the most efficient way possible to do so.

So basically if you decide to help, you can write copy in your free time (and it should be a pretty small section depending on how many people I get to help) and then randomly critique others' at your convenience.  I have yet to decide how the copy will be divided up but that will come as we get more and more volunteers.  Please bookmark this page and check back periodically.

THANK YOU!
