SalonCon Next Weekend [04 Sep 2008|07:01pm]

After much nagging from many of my beloved fans (you know who you are, ya lovable scamps), I made a last ditch effort to get my sorry ass into the vendor's room for next weekend's SalonCon... which panned out. Yes lords and ladies (or in my case hooligans and harlots) Grendel's Den Design Studio will be attending SalonCon [http://www.salonconvention.com/], spooking the joint up.

For those of you not in the know, SalonCon is a gathering of folks who do what we oldsters call 'Steampunk'. Lots of you young'ns like to call it 'Neo-Victorian' or yeah, Steampunk. Right. In any case it's a pretty swank affair at a pretty swank price (25 shells if you nab them online by tomorrow, 35 bucks at the door). Check out the website for the shindig's schedule, which include a performance from Abeny Park.

Our good friends at HBO sent us the following information about their upcoming vampire documentaries, one of which ("A New Type") features interviews and footage shot at Dracula's Ball earlier this year. Here's what they had to say:

"So, here is the final info on the shows. After months of shooting and interviewing, we have finally delivered the two documentary style shows about the History of Vampires in popular culture. The shows are divided in two parts, called:

TRUE BLOODLINES: VAMPIRE LEGENDS

And

TRUE BLOODLINES: A NEW TYPE

Both shows will premiere on HBO main channel on Saturday night, September 6th at 7pm and 7:30pm respectively.

Then again on Sunday the 7th, at 8pm and 8:30pm, which then leads up to the premiere of TRUE BLOOD at 9pm.

If you want to see it before then, both shows will begin on HBO ON DEMAND on September 1st and run through the end of the year."

So, be sure to check out "A New Type" to see if you're in it, and of course be sure to check out True Blood.

Spot on! I'm a Pagan and a Unitarian, and I do like Dead Can Dance (as well as Era, Enya, Enigma, Lesiem, Love Spirals Downwards, Loreena McKennitt etc), I used to be vegetarian (although am now an organic omnivore wherevere possible) and I do like hugs!

In the spirit of countering the bad energy going around right now, I have decided to do at least one kind thing for someone every week.

I invite all of you to do the same.

Take the time out at least once a week (if not more) to do one kind thing for someone you know or even a total stranger. You don't have to spend money, excessive time, or use your dwindling resources. You only need to put forth a bit of positive energy in hopes of creating a ripple that makes these dark days a little more tolerable.

A lot of people are hurting, drowning and lashing out. A little patience and thoughtfulness can transform entire days, weeks and lives in a matter of seconds.

      В последние годы Дениэл Менч увлекся экспериментами со звуком, добавляя в свое творчество новые инструменты и их возможности и активно исследуя ритм. Делает он это, как всегда, виртуозно, но мне все равно ближе его ранние работы – яростные, шумные, сырые, злые. Лейбл Soleilmoon на этом двухдисковом издании собрал композиции с различных сборников и виниловых изданий – все раннее и крайне интересное.
      На первом диске расположились вещи короткие и более агрессивные. Дыхание, сердцебиение, растертая соль, разрушенные предметы, шорохи, скрежеты  – все собрано в колючие комки резких звуков, создающих весьма нездоровую атмосферу. Представляется полутемная запертая комната, по стенам которой бегают полчища металлических пауков, нападающих на людей и выгрызающих спинной мозг. Второй диск приютил на себе более спокойные (условно, конечно) и длинные композиции, тоже достаточно безрадостные, но это безрадостность скорее от невосполнимой потери или просто осенняя тоска. Можно сравнить их с некоторыми работами Aube, разве только что у Менча звуков побольше и смешивает он их как-то по-своему, создавая в целом уникальный стиль. Лично я получил массу удовольствия, когда отключил все мысли и просто послушал одного из любимых музыкантов.

         Довольно «шумный» релиз от Drone records – начинаясь с абразивного высокочастотного шума в духе Merzbow, композиция «In» потом, конечно, перерастет в более спокойное течение, которое периодически будет нарушаться звуковыми перепадами, скачками и хрустами. Напряженный поток звуков много раз поменяет свое направление, становясь то агрессивным, то задумчивым, чтобы в конце перерасти в тихие «булькающие» звуки, расслабляющие после шумовой атаки. «Out» же служит примером неплохого noise ambient, с обилием разнообразных звуков и уклоном в авангард и элетроакустику – видно, что музыканты выжали максимум из своих компьютеров. У поклонников музыкальных экспериментов творение Noise Dreams Machina может вызвать интерес.

      2-x дисковая коллекция «редкостей и вкусностей» от популярного ныне французского проекта. Альбом включает в себя неизданные ранее вещи, треки с компиляций, виниловых синглов и прочий труднодоставаемый материал.
      Derniere Volonte давно и прочно обосновались в нише «милитари-поп», где слово «поп» обозначает не место, из которого подобная музыка обычно выходит, а некую доступную массам простоту, не лишенную яркости и  элегантности. Большинство композиций на «Commémoration» построены по принципы «два притопа, три прихлопа», что ни сколько не умаляет значения музыки, делая ее оригинальной и самодостаточной в этих, казалось бы, примитивных способах выражения. Большие любители побарабанить, подобно In the Nursery, Derniere Volonte строят свои композиции на ритмах военных маршей и народных гуляний, украшая их патетическими оркестровками, незамысловатыми, но яркими и запоминающимися мелодиями на «три аккорда». Навеянные темой войны, их песни содержат речёвки (Soldat), звуки сражений и крики воинов, патетику (Hymn) и походные мелодии легионеров (Cœur De Légionnaire). Иногда проскакивают dark ambient элементы (Ultime Soupir). Вокальные партии исполнены на французском, и, при весьма посредственном исполнении, содержат дикий заряд хитовости и «прилипчивости» к языку – иногда кажется, что стоит изменить немного аранжировку, и выйдет натуральный Depeche Mode. При всем этом в песнях красной чертой проходит трагизм простого война, мужчины, вынужденного убивать и рисковать своей жизнью, оторванного от любимых людей и от дома. Грустный, пафосный, искренний, запоминающийся – так можно назвать этот альбом. Наверное, для многих после первого прослушивания он станет еще и незаменимым в домашней коллекции.

         На пластинке от «Drone records» под номером 91 обосновался весьма известный шведский проект «Moljebka Pvlse», представив два трека темного и очень медленного, я бы даже сказал, густого,  drone ambient. В первой композиции музыкант оперирует с протяжными и ровными гулами, выстраивая их в бесконечные гипнотические  атмосферы. Было бы хорошо, если бы не слишком стандартный подход – чем-то подобным занимаются сотни музыкантов-новичков. Вторая композиция интереснее – продолжая тему первого трека, музыкант сплетает из звуков некое подобие мелодии, грустной, красивой и неуловимой. Вроде бы все просто, но эта гармоничная и грустная атмосфера затягивает. Все вместе слушается с интересом, который не может погасить некое следование «стандартам». Неплохая «семерка».

Yesterday was one of those days I've referred to as 'electric' in the past. It was a thrilling roller coaster ride from start to finish. Ghosts rose from the past. Many new connections were made. Creative pacts were signed. It was.... electric. I wish those days didn't come once every few months but I cherish them all the same.

A deep, ancient pain I've carried for years found some catharsis in the most unexpected of ways. I don't know that I'll ever be completely over it but I was able to finally acknowledge that it happened and there was nothing I could have done about it. Further, I wasn't alone. There were others living with the same dark shadow cast over them. Somehow, we managed to grow up and become beautiful flowers in the world's garden.
