UPDATE NOTES:
… Another short update today as far as notes go, partly because nothing terribly exciting is happening here today, partly because my stomach is about to throw a tantrum if I don’t feed it.
Have a good weekend, y’all!

Jayd’s incentive looks like fun. I always did want a pony! :3 |

UPDATE NOTES: Gonna make this short, because I'm hungry and I still have an hour commute ahead of me and ... this took longer than expected. :/ At least I've had old episodes of 24 to keep me company!

Jayd's incentive for today is something I always wanted to draw, but I'm glad I didn't, because it would have never been so darn cute. |

UPDATE NOTES: It's Monday and we're back on track with a timely update and a funny new incentive and my computer NOT freaking out. It feels nice. :D
Up until I drew this page, I really had no idea how I was going to approach Diva's costume. But I'm enjoying drawing it thus far! I didn't think it was possible to do something more girly than her normal outfit, but, well, there ya go.

Jayd has drawn Muffins for the incentive today, and ... hahahahaha. The look on his face. So spot on. |

UPDATE NOTES: This is the update that didn’t want to be.
First, I couldn’t figure out how to color this stupid page. Then, I had a gigantic brainfart and left my computer at work. That’s okay! I have my sister’s computer! Which used to be my computer! … But I left my tone swatches on my machine. But wait, that’s not it! This night of epic fail ended in me completely forgetting the login URL for evildivacomics.com.
So, I apologize if any of the colors are off or I forgot to flat a small area or WHATEVER. Hopefully I’ll have Shantotto (my Mac Mini) back home tomorrow, and I’ll be able to fix any problems.
As for the incentive, well, Jayd’s having her own problems — this time with transportation, so she wasn’t able to scan her sketch for tonight. I give up! We just can’t win tonight.
(I’ll try to remember to sketch something new tomorrow for the incentive. I feel bad updating without it!) |

UPDATE NOTES: Ruh roh! Things are getting interesting! Apologies if the perspective on the third panel looks a little funky; I just got all excited about finally getting to draw Dad looking all srs business after three issues. >:D
In other news: Eliza from The Xcentrikz was kind enough to offer to interview us, so if you're curious about Pete and I, the history of Evil Diva, or what our rambling predictions are for the future of comics, you can check it out here.

Jayd's incentive for today is ... /shakes Magic 8 Ball ... Michelle! Bonding with her PS3. Ah, a girl after my own heart. ♥ |

( EVIL DIVA : SUMMER BREAK SKETCH )
UPDATE NOTES: Oh man. A couple of people gave me really good suggestions for today's sketch, but I sat down to work on it and all I could think of was the beach and the smell of sunscreen and delicious ice cream. (Tangent: when I was about Diva's age, I liked to go to beach with my sister, and we often stopped at Subway to grab sandwiches to eat while we sunned. One day, I was hungry on the walk out to the sand, so I unwrapped my Italian sub ... and a seagull promptly swooped down, snatching all 6 inches of meat, cheese, and bread out of my hand. I think I made the biggest D: face ever.)
Anyway, I know I said this last week, but this time I mean it for real -- we should be back to our regular schedule on Wednesday. It's actually quite fortunate that I ended up taking today off, because I've been having computer problems all weekend and wouldn't have been able to color today's page anyway. (As it stands, this sketch baaarely made it up. I ended up using my sister's computer, and it took a good half-dozen attempts to make her scanner cooperate.)

Jayd's incentive is so lively and sporty that it tires me just looking at it. ;) |

UPDATE NOTES: Late update! Very very late!
Big fat apologies, y'all. I severely underestimated how long this would take me (so, so long on the flats), not to mention the fact that I'm hosting an impromptu taco party.
I believe I may be taking Monday off for the July fourth holiday, but I'd like to still post something, so -- which characters would y'all like to see sketches of? :D
OFF TO EAT MOAR TACOS.

Jayd's incentive for today features the blonde mystery man, which makes me a very happy girl indeed. |

( EVIL DIVA : SKETCH COMICS: POSTCARDS FROM HELL 1 )
UPDATE NOTES: I know, I know. It's the oldest joke in the book! BUT IT HAD TO BE DONE. (Diva probably knows all the words to the song, too. It's just how she rolls.)
In site news, we'll be back to our regular schedule on Friday with even more nods and winks to 'Uncle Walt'. (As Pete calls him. All of this mockery is done from a place of love: Pete is peerless in his devotion to Disney. Someday I will post a video of him singing Belle's song, and you will truly understand.) I've added a few new fanarts to the gallery since Monday, and at some point in the future I'll be posting a link to an interview. Hopefully it'll give y'all a better idea of who we are and what we do -- if you care about such things! XD

Jayd has prepared an epic Canada Day incentive, an epilogue of sorts to this title block. Please, if you have a chance, vote today! We've slipped from the top ten with the new month rollover, but this incentive is well worth the extra clicks. \m/
Happy Canada Day, my homies to the north! |

UPDATE NOTES: "We must go through one door a week like that!" ;)
We had a great brainstorming session today at lunch -- I'm really excited for where Evil Diva is going. We should be wrapping up this issue in a month to a month and a half, and we're planning for issue four to continue this arc as well as explore some backstories. I'd definitely like to answer some questions about Angela and Gabriel.
As for the immediate future, well, Wednesday will be a sketch comic (or two!) because I'm currently exhausted beyond all reason and I need some time to recuperate. (I'm rather excited about the opportunity to draw more Hell, though, so it should be a fun one.) After that, it should be back to normal! And thanks to everyone for the great comments on the special image -- I'm just sad I couldn't reply to each and every person.

Jayd's incentive sketch for today continues her thematic exploration of the mahou-shoujo paradigm, synergizing the stylistic excesses of ... oh who am I kidding? I LOL'D. |

( EVIL DIVA : SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY IMAGE )
UPDATE NOTES:Oh man, I said this would be late, but I really wasn't counting on it going into sudden-death overtime, here. On the upside, I am now stuffed full of gelato and sushi and my closet boasts my very first pair of fancy shoes.
Anyway, the special picture was created in widescreen format, and this is one drawing I didn't want to lose all the details on: click here to see it in all its bandwidth-hogging glory. I'm not entirely happy with the composition -- Aki should have probably been seated further left, as there's a huge visual gap dead-center -- and I may go back and tinker with the coloring (the fun stuff I did with the toning in Painter didn't resize very well at all) but I'm just too tired at this point to do much good.
There's no new incentive today because I planned to do a really silly lolcat sketch of Muffins, but I really just ... ran out of time. I hope y'all can forgive me. Maybe I'll upload it later this weekend. :D |

UPDATE NOTES: Aaand here we have it!
Sorry about the lateness on this one! I was chugging along on schedule, then I went to lay out the dialogue ... and spent about an hour making the :F face while I pushed around bubbles. I'm still not completely happy with the composition, but I guess that's the object lesson of one hundred pages: I probably would have never gotten past page ten if I has insisted on being completely happy with my work.
In celebration of one hundred pages, Friday's post will not feature a regular page, but rather a special image. And it may be a little, ahem, specially late, because my mother is in town and we have to go do girl things.

Today's incentive from Jayd is another shoujo-ization, this time of Mr. Virgil. I must admit that this plants a seed -- I've always wanted to do (Sort of) Old Man Adventures just so I can draw a slightly less ancient Virgil. >.>b |

UPDATE NOTES: This is truly an epic week for Evil Diva.
As I was heading out the door this morning, I loaded our first issue on a whim -- I knew our anniversary was coming up, and I remembered I wanted to give Pete a heads-up. What I found gave me a little shock: today is the first anniversary for Evil Diva.
Today also marks the 99th page, assuming you don't count sketch comics. On one hand, I'm a bit crestfallen that our one hundredth page won't fall on a more exciting passage, but on the other -- it's okay. If we can make walking and talking interesting, then the explosions and ultra-violence should be a piece of cake. Really, I'm happy that I've hit the triple digits and I still feel challenged.
Thank you to everyone who has been with us from day one (or day 364; I'm not picky), to everyone who has ever left a comment or bookmarked this site. I know it sounds cliche, but we really couldn't have gotten this far without you. I'm drinking a toast to you tonight! (Okay, maybe not a toast to every last one of you. I love y'all, but I don't want to end up with alcohol poisoning.)

Jayd's incentive today features a shoujo-ized Dad. WAI WAI. ^.^ |

UPDATE NOTES: This was one of those pages I was so sure I hated, and somehow it all came together in the end. Isn't it always great when that happens?
There are actually a lot of references tucked into this page -- Tisi is two, actually. (Her name is one, while physically, she's based off a certain TV character. I'm curious if anyone guesses who!) The goal for this bit of Hell is to reference a 60s aesthetic, and the lobby design features a few borrowed elements, such as the ceiling, which is a nod to Wright's Johnson Wax Building. (Pete said he thinks that the founder portrait resembles a certain, ahem, former Disney CEO, which wasn't intentional but definitely works with the theme. >.>b)

Jayd's incentive for today makes me LOL like a great big dork. Methinks there needs to be a whole series of these interpretations! Biseinen Dad and Virgil? OH YEAH BABY. |

UPDATE NOTES: Ommmmgggg, my neck hurts SO BAD from coloring this page. The pain I endure for this comic! /shakes tiny fist
It occurred to me while coloring this today that I should probably should have been cackling at the opportunity to draw people in Hell -- after all, isn't that what Dante did? (Presumably. I mean, there are a lot of his enemies in the Inferno.) I just can't muster that much hate for anyone, even for this benign version of Hell. So instead, I amused myself by drawing types of people who annoy me: Orange County soccer moms, jerks on cellphones (you know that one guy is thinking 'why can't I get any reception?'), vain bodybuilders. Heh!
Sadly, this is the last look at the top half of Hell in this issue, though I definitely want to explore it more in sketch comics. One of the little details that didn't quite make it through the resizing is the wait sign next to the dude who is fretting with his tie. It says 'WAIT 6 HOURS'. Because that's the epitome of Hell to me: not just getting poked with a pitchfork and scorched by fire, but waiting in line to do so.

AUGH WHY DOES JAYD DRAW ANGELA AND GABRIEL SO CUTE. WHY.
(As for the names on the last page -- wow, you guys really cracked me up. I think Biggs and Wedge is the winner, but I also had a big fat LOL over: Steve and Steve, Adam and Steve, Kar [Kharon] and Phil [Phlegyas], Bert and Ernie, and Blake [or Norville! Scooby Do FTW] and Fred. I'm shocked no one suggested Bill and Ted! ;) ) |

UPDATE NOTES: I'm back! I had a lovely restful weekend -- thank you to everyone who wished me well. The best part of coming back to work today? There was a shiny new Mac Mini where my old workstation had been. And it is beeeeautiful. I LOVE MY BOSSES.
As for the page today, it was a bit of a doozy to draw and color. (Actors always say walking and talking is deceptively hard, now I see it's the same in comics.) I know some people will ask, so here's some preemptive answers:
1) Diva switches Cerby to the other arm in the fourth panel. I managed to obscure most of the movement when I drew Dad. 2) I don't know how Michelle got to Hell! Maybe she took a bus. Or hid in the back of Diva's car, 24 style. It's not a huge plot point, so I didn't worry about it. It's up to your imagination. 3) The security measures are there to let the workers like Diva's dad in, and to keep the damned in. In case that wasn't clear! 4) I know that's guy's usage of "ironic" is ostensibly wrong, but I have this image of him watching it ironically, like wearing a trucker hat or belt buckle. This security guard is totally a hipster inside. 5) ... And ohhh booger I forgot to put names on the security dudes' nametags, quick, readers, tell me what their names should be. XD

Another costume design incentive by Jayd! Please keep those votes coming, we like feeling validated. ;) |

UPDATE NOTES: Yesterday was a little weird.
If I was famous, I'd (have my rep) say I came down with a touch of exhaustion. As it stands, I'm not famous, but I am at home for a long weekend; I just let myself get a little too stressed.
I'm sorry about the lack of new page today. I hope you guys can forgive me! I'm planning to be back Monday as good as new.

UPDATE NOTES: Thanks for the brilliant(/insightful/hilarious) comments on the last page, y'all. There's not nearly enough of the part of Hell in the script to explore all the great things you guys brought up (nor is there enough time to draw in all the little details I want, so pardon this page if Hell looks a little depopulated -- it's a Monday or something), but I guess that's what sketch comics are for. >:D

Jayd's incentive for the day features our very favorite grumpy Guidance Counselor. If there's one thing this issue is in sore need of, it's moooar Virgil. |

Oddly, as short (in terms of panels) as this page is, it's been one of the hardest thus far to get right. Speaking of getting things right -- thank you to all the people who mentioned she wasn't wearing her purse in the last page and thus saving me some major embarrassment down the line. I actually went in after Jayd's cleanup and added it! We'll just pretend she picked up on her way out the house, eh?

Cool new incentive today courtesy of Jayd, featuring the Lucy and company. Now I want to figure out a way to work them into this issue. >:D |

( EVIL DIVA : SKETCH COMIC 4 )
UPDATE NOTES: GAAH.
Lots of apologies today: first, of course, for being so late. (We didn’t get back from E3 until about 3, and I passed out until 4, then it took another hour and a half to get home.) Secondly, for the lack of incentive today; I grabbed some of Jayd’s sketches as I headed out the door for home, but I can’t get any scanner drivers to work on my new computer.
Thirdly, for the lack of color. Fourthly, for the lack of update to fanart and failure to respond to emails and comments. Fifthly — well, I’m sure I’m missing something. In case you can’t tell, I’m kind of frazzled!
I’m planning to at least rectify the incentive situation tomorrow when I get to work tomorrow. Thanks again for your patience, y’all, as well as the votes to get to five. I would celebrate tonight, but … I think I’d rather sleep. Man, I’m getting old.
(By the by, before y’all ask: yes, that’s an American Psycho reference; no, I don’t really think of this as canon, because, really? Virgil would never go to visit Diva of his own free will. >.>;) |
