P R E M I S E (OOC)

We don't let ooc affairs affect our RPing. We're skilled, mature, experienced players, and in the end, what matters to us is the good of the game, the good of our characters, and the harmony of all. We'll CR with whoever is IC for us to, we don't let bias of the player in question affect our opinion on their characters, we never ignore characters belonging to muns we don't like. While, of course, we love to play with our close friends, cliques are for high school, and we're always willing to let others into our CR circles. We don't like our friends' characters better than our acquaintances because they're our friends. They're just oftentimes better players, better character builders, and we like their way of doing things. We don't let ooc affairs affect our RPing.

... right?

This roleplay is an experiment. It isn't a contest. It isn't a measuring stick. It's a test for yourself, to see if this is actually true. And it's an excellent way to get unbiased feedback on your own RPing, sometimes which is pretty hard for any of us to get, sometimes.

Every player in this game will have only one character. This is a character they have built from scratch themselves. Over the course of a month, they will play this character in Everthorne Academy. They will do what we always do, build CRs, have romances, follow plotlines ... and they will also watch. They'll read everything, everyone's threads, and constantly be evaluating the skill of the other players, the solidness of the characters built, the openness with which they CR, their activity and commitment. And they won't tell a single soul which character is theirs.

At the end of the month, the term will end. Each player will submit a "report," giving honest, fair constructive criticism of each character. This isn't a bashing session, building the strengths of the character isn't just encouraged, it's neccessary. After every report has been submitted, everyone will reveal which character is theirs, and the reports will be posted.

Do you want to know how well you work with others? Do you want to know how seriously you really take ooc into ic? Do you want to get fair, honest concrit on your roleplay skills from people who know what they're talking about? And most importantly, are you willing to commit to a month at Everthorne almost as grueling for the players as it is for the students they play?

Then apply away. I'm thrilled to have you.

P R E M I S E (IC)

Welcome to Everthorne Academy.

It's a prestigious place, big, nice, with large hanging gardens and beautiful architecture. It posseses a sprawling library, fifty-nine classes, three faculty buildings, a splendid theatre, a ballroom fit for a king, well kept riding trails, three tennis courts, and two large dormitories, Aphra House, for the young ladies, and Corven House, for the young men. All the curtains are velvet, all the carpets are thick, all the books are original copies, all the professors are famous.

This is the training school for those born with the talent for magic. Capable of incredible feats, those who have this gift are revered and respected, the highest class of society in Fairn, in the service of it's royal family. They come here from all walks of life, after being tested at age nineteen, to learn to manage their skills and bind nature to their wills, and also to be clever, witty, classy, graceful, talented, impressive, well-read, charismatic, and beautiful.

For some, all of this comes easily as breathing. For some, every day is a struggle. Some will survive the grueling pace, and emerge as most exulted society has to offer. And some will fail, have all of their magics forcibly and painfully stripped from them, and be sent home.

The students have one month to turn themselves into the sort of mages who can pass the tests set before them and emerge victorious. The pace is gruelling and the stakes are high. At Everthorne, there are no make-ups, no summer schools, no grading curves, and no second chances.

W O R L D

Fairn is a standard fantasy kingdom with a tiny renaissance flair. Technology is nonexistant, as you would expect. No electricity, no running water, no magical alternatives for any of these things. Characters do speak in modern language, to just plain make things easier, although the upper classes would sound more formal and some obvious changes would exist (sayings that rely on modern inventions just don't work.) Travel is all done by horseback and carriages. Fairn has all four seasons, and is currently at the beginning of summer. There are several major cities, some smaller ones, little towns, tiny villages, large farms, and the lowest of the low, backwater farms who have little or nothing. There is no discriminating when it comes time for mage tests, the testors visit every person whose birth was registed in the capital of Reyse, where Everthorne is located, nineteen years before. If they pass, they're taken along to Everthorne. If they fail, they're left there. Testing it the biggest event in Fairn, the most important day of any one person's life.

Soceity in Fairn is run off a strict class system. The classes will be explained shortly, but it is crucial to remember that those in higher classes, as a societal norm, will look down at those in lower classes. Though all are supposed to be equal in Everthorne, it is rarely, if ever, the case.

Fairn's society is patriarchal, but women are not expected to be pretty decorations. They're merely expected to stay away from "men only" paths, such as knighthood, or serious tennis. There is no taboo against women speaking their minds openly. Male inheritance is strictly enforced; as such, women are expected to marry. Homosexuality is frowned on and conducted in secret. Incest is an abomination. While extramarital sex is forbidden, premartial is completely allowed in every class but the nobles, clergy and the royals. Fairn is ruled as an absolute monarchy, by a King.

The religion is a vague "God" who has many aspects of the Christian God, and a clergy that is comprised of priests and priestesses, who are chaste and separated from one another. There are many cathedrals, churchs, and chapels across Fairn.

Fairn keeps our calander. This is to make things easier. 8)

It was a mild climate and environment, both following the likes of western Europe.

Fairn has professional sports. These come in the form of horseback riding and tennis. The horseback riding is jumping courses and racing. The tennis is rudmentary, but the rules follow current standard rules. Women are accepted as riders, but not as tennis players, though there have been cases of woman pretending to be men to win the people's support and thus maintain their position.

For the sake of convenience, basically any fantasy profession or element you can think of is most likely allowed in Fairn. The only true world specific info is the class system, the testing, the tennis and riding fixations, and Everthorne itself. World building is not strict by any means, since there just isn't enough time to build anything of the sort. Try to keep inside these guidelines, but bend them as much as you want.

C L A S S E S

Fairn's class system is very segregated and strict. As follows, in descending order.

Royalty ;; the immeadiate family of the King, and the King himself. They live in the Palace in Reyse. The current monarch is King Torith, and any of his family are completely open for application.

Mages ;; the graduates of Everthorne Academy. No matter what class they were in before, they're mages now. While there is some predjudice left within the class, to the outside, nothing looks even slightly amiss. They are in the service of the king, keeping his laws, giving him counsel, and are required to be in his army if they ever come to war, but Fairn has long been at peace, and their lives are mostly taken up with being respected, researching, parties, whatever they wish to do. Being born with the gift is the greatest thing that can possibly happen to a person.

Nobility ;; the highborn of Fairn's society. They live in great manses in the cities, spend their time at parties and galas. They serve very little actual purpose, aside from being rich, beautiful, and sociable. For those who have other amibitions, books, recreational riding, research, there is always money to pursue such things.

Merchants ;; the wealthy traders. They spend their time counting coins, keeping books, making money, spending money, and training their heirs to do the same. They're scattered throughout the cities.

Sportsmen ;; the well loved riders and tennis players. When they die, their families revert to whatever they were before, if they were lower on the ladder, but while the sportman is alive, he and his family enjoy prestige, wealth, and respect, as well as idolizing admirers.

Knights ;; those who have undertaken knightly vows, and have passed through all the tests and trials to emerge at the end with their spurs and their anointed knighthood. After they die, their families are given money and town land, and become townsfolk. Classes higher than knights don't become knights.

Clergy ;; those in the service of God. They enter the clergy before their tenth year, and are completely inducted into the faith by their fifteenth. They have a tiny amount of healing power, given to them when they're fully inducted. Some stay in their churches, some travel the land to heal the sick or hurt.

Tradesmen ;; blacksmithes, goldsmiths, locksmiths, the people in the cities and towns who do the things no one else can do, making them more valuable. They teach this trade to their children.

Townsfolk ;; the common people who reside in the cities and towns. They tend to have jobs not specialized, like the tradesmen, and are thus far less valuable overall.

Countryfolk ;; they who live in the forests, meadows, and mountains, the low ones, they have very little, the crown owns all their land, and they barely manage to scrape by.

No matter what class someone is, they must take their child to Reyse to be registered as soon as they are born. The registration day is when they're named, and their "naming day" is their birthday. The testors come to them, no matter where they are, nineteen years after that day.

The magic of Fairn consists of binding nature and the elements to one's will. Therefore, anything that can technically be considered a binding of wind, water, fire, or earth is possible. While near the beginning of training, the students can't do anything, but as time goes on, they'll progressively get better, depending on how well they take to their lessons. There are shields around the perimetre of Everthorne that don't allow any magic to leave, which are in turn bound to the students upon enrollment, so ambitious mages can't leave the school and destroy the world! After being inducted as mages, they are bound with a vow they're incapable of breaking to never hurt another human being with their magic for selfish gain.

Essentially, if it's elemental and plausible? Go nuts, they can do it. Mages have the power in Fairn.

And please note, the students would not know they have magic or be able to use their magic or anything before they've been testing. Magic requires training to be used.

Courses at Everthorne run the gamut from ballroom dancing, to horseback riding, to tennis, to dining, to poise, to conversation, to how to blow things up with your mind. Students take eight one hour classes, six days a week.

Students are given free roam of the grounds, but they must be in their dormatories by curfew (this world does have mechanical clocks, just not electric), or risk being expelled. They are not allowed out into the city without an escort and permission.

Roughly 15-20 students enroll in Everthorne each term. There are four terms a year.

While at Everthorne, students are assigned a horse, regardless of whether they own one of their own or not.

All students are given enchanted journals the moment they walk in the gate. This is to make plans, meet other students, etc, etc, etc. These journals are called "The Network." You can call them [info]everthorne.

Never reveal which character is yours. If you do this and I found out, your character gets expelled, the end. I'll make up a good IC reason. Unless it was an accident, everyone makes mistakes.

This isn't a detective game. It's better if you don't try to figure out who plays who. Of course, you'll speculate, but try not to try too hard. Not knowing is part of the fun, and what makes it easy to give crit regardless of who's your friend and who's not at the end.

You MUST submit a report at the end. If you don't you're expelled from possible future terms. Harsh, yeah, but this is kind of the point of the game.

There is an ooc comm. It is here --> [info]everthorne_ooc. very pretty. join it! watch it. love it.

Everthorne has no logging. The reason should be fairly obvious :')

If you need to ask another mun something character specific, ask with your character journal, in your character voice, in ooc. Because duh. And the person being asked? You respond with your character journal, in your character voice. Good?

I'll also be playing a character. Two, in fact. The headmistress, [info]ivyclimbs, and my own sekrit character. Yeah, I know it kind of DEFEATS THE PURPOSE!!! that I can play, but just think of it as one more character for you to CR with and not an evil mod bending the rules :] Think POSITIVE!!

No, you're not allowed to make your own icons. Not only does that kind of defeat the purpose a bit, icon styles are very recognizable, I'm hoping to erase any icon bias, as well. I like to think I'm at least passable in skill, so don't cry too hard?

No smileys, *actions*, ooc notes in ic comments/posts or anything. These are written journals, this is a fantasy world, and ooc notes ruin the illusion. Not the mention, we don't know who you are!

All character information must be in the journal userinfo at all times. When it's not there, it makes understanding and playing to other people's characters much, much harder.

I can be reached at rosaaquafire[at]gmail.com if you have ANY questions. I'm one of those compulsive email checkers so yeah. I DO have some problems receiving at times, if you go a week without a reply, resend, sorry, this happens with every address I get so yeah. Oh, I'm [info]leah_lightwing, btw. You can call me Rosa or possibly the Ass of Power. Nice to meet you.

All the obvious stuff. Godmoding = no. Being a bitch = no. Disobeying rules = no. duh. :]

A P P L I C A T I O N S

Applications should be completely filled out and sent to rosaaquafire[at]gmail.com. All apps will be processed as soon as I can. This will be at least six days before the start time. I reserve the right to edit any wording in your application that I think sounds too recognizably "you." Sorry. :] One application per person. I will not reject apps, not unless we get over 40 participants, which is unlikely. The app is just to make sure you actually know what you're doing. Since the point is the evaluate your quality, if you suck, I'll still let you in. A lot of people will just tell you that you suck.

Please be sure to check ooc before apping, as some classes might get banned as too many from one class fill up or some such. Thank you!

YOU
Name what do we call you?
Age how old are you?
Player Journal your journal, not your character's?

YOUR CHARACTER
Name character name (given and surname)
Social Class blah blah blah

Birthday cause it's important! needs to be within five months previous to the start of the game, since otherwise they would not be in this term!
Preferred Element what you think their preferred magical element will be.
History tell me their story, from the moment they were born until the moment they walk through the gates of Everthorne and get the journal
Personality who are they, really? How do they act? What are their quirks? What kind of people do they like? Predjudices? Nervous habits? This stuff goes here.
Appearance Describe the character. Everthorne will use anime PBs. Please include the PB here, so I get can to work on icons!

F A Q

Q. Won't time zones make things obvious?

A. Yeah, they will. This is where the rule about not playing detective comes in. Just don't ask questions and do it. And hey, have fun. Ninja into other people's timezones! Frame other people by changing the times on your comm posts! Stop threading when they go offline, if it's convenient! Just run with this, and try not to play guess who everyone is and ruin the game.

Q. When is this starting? For a commitment like this, I kinda need to know.

A. Everthorne is actually no longer running. Sorry. It might get an encore eventually if enough interest is expressed.

Q. How many terms has Everthorne Academy been running? Has it been successful?

A. Everthorne started in August 2006, and it ran until it was officially closed in February 2008.

Q. Why did it close?

A. Interest faded and I didn't have the time to run it for the ... five people who stuck around. It ended dramafree and with a pat on the back, so there's nothing negative hanging around the edged.

Q. I hate you. Can I still play?

A. Yes 8) In fact, you're encouraged!

Q. I don't know/hate someone else/everyone else/everyone else hates me. Can I still play?

A. Seriously, it doesn't MATTER. You could never have LJ RPed before in your entire life, and you're encouraged to try this out. It's really rewarding, not to mention fun.

Q. Who are those people in the layout and userinfo graphics?

A. The woman in the userinfo is Fiona Ivennery, aka Madam Ivy, the headmistress. I play her (Meg also occassionally plays her.) She's there because she's the only consistant character from one term to the next, and I didn't want to remake ALL the graphics every term 8)

The characters represented in the layout are characters from the first term, voted by the players/audience as the most memorable and/or representative characters. The currently features characters are, listed from left to right Erika Wesson, Jet Orr, Asher Cormac, and Bryn.

Q. What is this I keep hearing about a linked RP?

A. [info]a_new_order. it's kinda dead.
