It looks as if I have another activity in which I am paired with a member of the faculty. No offense intended to Madam Ivy, of course, but it would be nice to have the opportunity to spend an evening with a classmate instead. I much preferred my pairing the first week, with Miss Magrain. I am, however, glad to see that Miss Ashford finally got her wish.

Practical magic is much more difficult than I was expecting. It was my hope that theory was only difficult because of lack of experience, but that has not been the case. At least my skills in Water magic are sufficient enough to prevent an accident with fire.

On that note, I do hope they do not charge us for damages to the room. There is a small burn mark left on my desk in my room that I am unable to thoroughly clean. I am most ashamed to admit it was my fault.

Practical magic is fascinating, isn't it?

I was most looking forward for the opportunity to spend an evening during our weekend activity with you, Miss Ashford, but it seems that luck was not on our side once again. Perhaps we will have the chance next week.

I have heard good things about the play we are to be seeing. I am most excited to be able to see it for myself.

God, I hate politics. I always thought they were ridiculous before and now that I've learned more about them, I realize I was completely right.

Mister Yoren doesn't help matters. I hate people like that.

Congratulations again to Toby and Eleanor on their scavenger hunt victory. I told you that our team's numbers may not be much of an advantage.

I rather expected these to be quiet with so few of us here, but it's still a bit of a shame.

How is everyone doing so far in courses? Even though it has only been a few days, it cannot hurt to ask.

It has been a wonderful day to begin our lessons. The weather is just delightful despite the cold and makes the scenery of the school grounds just that much more breathtaking. Meals were magnificent as well. I haven't eaten so well in ages.

I must admit, however, that our first day of classes were slightly dull. However, I am certain they will become more engrossing in the coming weeks.

I know this may sound silly to some, but there are three of us in the service of the church here, aren't there? I thought perhaps to propose prayer meetings every night, before curfew. If, of course, we have the time.

Oh, and introductions. Where are the things I have learned? William Arlotte, and it is a pleasure to meet you all. I look forward to getting to know each of you.

Greetings, students. Welcome to Everthorne Academy. I trust that by now you are situated in your rooms and have began to unpack. If not, please close this book, and wait until you are. That is your first priority. Then reopen it, because this is certainly your second.

You saw me earlier, when I gave you this journal, and directed the young ladies to Aphra House, and the young men to Corven House. I am Madam Ivy. You will address me as such. I am your headmistress, and you'll be listening to everything I say.

For some of you, the following month will be a cakewalk. Some of you are already profficient in over half of the skills taught here. But you'll pay attention and learn regardless. Consider it a review.

For some of you, the following month will be torture. Overcome it, or fail. The price of failure is high. I would advise making a point to overcome it, instead.

This is The Network. It's your best friend when you're here. You are required to monitor it closely, as it is the best way I have of communicating to all of you in the quickest period of time. Also, it's the best way to get to know one another, make plans, study, and collect your thoughts, all of which you'll need to do.

This is one of our smallest class sizes in memorable history, and I hope you all become very close as a result.

Classes begin tomorrow. You will find your schedules tucked into the back cover of this book; they're all identical, so don't bother comparing. You will also find instructions for how to lock your entries in this book, and a list of the rules for Everthorne, both worth reading, if you ask me. I would advise using today as a means to famiarlize yourself with campus, with the rules, and with your fellow students. Please don't hesitate to use the Network for this, it's why it was created.

Any questions? You may ask me at any time. My door is always open, but you'll probably find it easier on the legs to just ask here.

I hope you all succeed.

Congratulations to the graduates. There is no question that you have worked hard to achieve what many others have not. Well done. To those who did not graduate, my commiserations. I'm certain that you tried your very best. In all honesty, it will not be easy for some of you to endure this failure, but I believe that one is able to learn more from it than from their successes. Whether you have passed or not, I wish you the best for the future.

Please feel free to make one final statement here, before you hand back your journal as you leave.

It's hard to believe this term's already over. It seems like only yesterday we were just getting to know on another. I'm glad I had the chance to know everyone, barring a certain someone.
