I'm here at work today - racking up some OT during student check in. It's been fairly slow so far - but it'll probably pick up once kids actually start getting settled and try plugging in their computers. It's all good because it's as humid as hell outside but in the computer labs its nice a chill! Yay AC!! I'm glad I decided to get my laptop out of my office before I came over or I'd be twiddling my thumbs - though I guess I could have used one of the lab machines, but I like having my own.
Annnnd - I got nothin'

| What a co-inky-dink! |
[06 Sep 2008|01:05am] |
I've been hearing off and on about HBO's new vampire television series 'True Blood (I'm indifferent because I don't have HBO, but I intend on buying the first season on DVD whenever it comes out). An d so I was scanning an article in People magazine earlier today (well..Friday) when I can across the lead actors name..
Stephen Moyer...
*giggles* I'm sorry of laughing but is that not the closest thing to the name Stephenie Meyer? I can't help but giggle at the poor boys situation and having a name so very simalar to Her Royal Brattiness, Smeyer (not to be confused with the Brat Prince himself)

So, I've changed my layout. I found this picture on sxc and absolutely loved it--snagged it and went to town making a layout around it. :)
Thoughts? I haven't decided if I like this one completely yet. I might need to change the background color and put some sort of floral texture. I do love my backgrounds...
(Did I mention I make custom layouts? For a very small fee! scholarslayouts )

From my town's police logs as posted in the local weekly: "A Beth Avenue caller reported a dying skunk on a front lawn. A police officer reported the “skunk” was actually a McDonald’s wrapper."

Radical Face - Glory |
] |
And suddenly, we're a clan. And how we both came to the same conclusion, we may never know. Maybe there are more, maybe there are only two. We're groundflyers--we pilot the earth, we hover above the ground as the world turns beneath us and thus travel, 3D. No use for the world, when it was flat, folding maps. We are suspended above the sea, torn between flight and gravity.

Sorry. My dad emailed me this and I thought it was hilarious.
I was talking to a friend of mine's little girl the other day. I asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up and she replied, "I want to be President!" Both of her parents are liberal Democrats and were standing there. So then I asked her, "If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?" She replied, "I'd give houses to all the homeless people." "Wow - what a worthy goal." I told her, "You don't have to wait until you're President to do that. You can come over to my house and mow, pull weeds, and sweep my yard, and I'll pay you $50. Then I'll take you over to the grocery store where this homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward a new house." Since she is only 6, she thought that over for a few seconds. While her Mom glared at me, she looked me straight in the eye and asked, "Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?" And I said, "Welcome to the Republican Party." Her folks still aren't talking to me.

| Schindler's Tankstelle, 申德勒加油站, petrol stations and sheepish taxi drivers ... |

Today I had lunch with a recruiter. No, I am not intending to make a move, it's just that this year, the guy's company had done a really interesting survey about staff happiness, best and worst places to work in Beijing. The survey had prompted a lot of discussion at the office and I had called the guy to chat to him about it because it was so interesting.
Recently we made an appointment to meet up for lunch and he said we should meet at Schindler's Tankstelle, a German place that's near Ritan Park. Sure, said I and printed out the address in Chinese. Tankstelle means petrol station in German, or gas station if you're American. The Chinese translation of the restaurant's name into Chinese was 申德勒加油站 shēndélè jiā yóu zhàn. 申德勒 shēndélè is just a phonetic transliteration of 'Schindler'. 加油站 jiā yóu zhàn is a petrol station/gas station.

The cab driver looked at the address, nodded emphatically, said he knew where we were going. What was funny? ( Read more... )

We have National Day holidays in October. From memory, we get a week off... Ordinarily I'd rather kick myself in the head rather than go travelling in China during a Chinese public holiday, but my friend Alice mentioned 阆中 Lángzhōng to me when she was here and it caught my fancy and made me want to go travelling again.
It's in Sichuan Province. The Canadian and I have been there before. We went to Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province and we also went to Wolong to see the pandas. Sichuan really is a gorgeous and diverse sort of place that has all sorts of things to see. Anyway, 阆中 Lángzhōng is an ancient city first built during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907). They say that it is one of the four best-preserved ancient cities in China, renowned for its old streets, lanes and courtyards.

For each question, answer with a quote or lyric that goes along with your answer to that question. For example, if it asks for your favorite movie, answer with a quote from your favorite movie. Then, your Friend List can guess which song/movie/etc your quote or lyric is from!

Below is a list of colleges I'm looking at and the pro's and con's thereof. Why am I posting this? Firstly, because this is my blog so I am Queen. Secondly, because I have friends who are also looking for colleges and word-of-mouth is a great way to ease your college search. Lastly, because some people might like to have a look at the cool campuses and stuff.
I am ideally looking for a college within train/driving distance from D.C.. I have a lot of friends in D.C. that can adopt me for weekends and help me out, so it's a good homebase. Since my family is in the military, I shouldn't base my decisions on where they are located right now, since that could change in another year or so. Also, I like the north-east much better than the south-east because they actually have Fall and Winter.
The Top 3 (as of now): University of Mary Washington Berry College George Mason University
Virginia Colleges: University of Mary Washington Pros: Located right next to downtown Fredricksburg. About an hour outside of D.C. if driving. Right next to a train station. Small campus--everything is in walking distance. Pretty campus, with old Virginian style buildings. It has a good history department, and a lot of internship opportunities within D.C. Also offers Design Your Own Major, which could make it possible for me to major in Creative Writing with an emphasis on Historic Communications. Has cheap in-state tuition, and offers several scholarships. Has two female-only dorms. Offers a neat leadership program. Also, Thornton St. is right outside of the campus. (Only those who have read North and South will get that.) Cons: I'm not sure that all the dorms have air-conditioning, which I'll need for my hands. Some of the dorms are co-ed at random, so I could be rooming next to guys or across the hallway from them, which I am not entirely comfortable with. Also is a very competitive school, so might be hard to get into. Georgia Mason UniversityPros: Great school, with a lot of opportunities. Located a half hour from D.C. Has a really, really good arts department, so I can go watch a lot of plays, ballets and concerts. Offers a Study Abroad program for English majors that involves traveling with the Shakespeare Company in England for three weeks. Has the Smart System, where all notes and lectures go online. Also, the you can access the laundry room from your room to see if there's space for you to do your laundry, and it will email you when your laundry is done so you can pick it up. Cons: The dorms are co-ed on the same floor. Also, you can be roomed with three or even five to a room. Bathrooms are community, so you have to share with everyone. This is the major downside to me, and almost marks it off my list entirely. Georgia CollegesBerry CollegePros: Gorgeous campus. At the foot of the mountains, so you get the feel of seasons without leaving the south. Nice English department. The equestrian center allows you to take out horses even if you aren't taking horse classes. Has girl's-only dorms. Has on-campus apartments offered. Is completely WiFi. Is in a rural area but has a town nearby and a mall across the street. Is in a college community, with two other colleges nearby. I have a good church to go to already. Is within driving distance of a good airport. Is a Christian-based college, but not a "Christian" college. I can get an on-campus job as an English tutor. Cons: Isn't really close to anyone. The castle dorm has community bathrooms (I'm not sure about the other dorms). Pennsylvania Colleges
Wilkes UniversityPros: Really pretty living areas. (Heh. I'm waiting for my information package to get more information.) Very small college. Cons: Is four hours out of D.C. by drive. Don't know much beyond that. Elizabethtown College Pros: Looks like a cute town. Only two hours drive from D.C. Very small college. Cons: Don't know much about it at all. Am having trouble getting them to send me a packet. Drexel UniversityPros: They found me, so I guess they're interested in me? They have a cool logo. They're right next to Philadelphia. Offers a lot of scholarships. Cons: Not a pretty campus. Looks like it's right in the city. Not much known about it. (Waiting for information packet.) Grove City CollegePros: Looks like it's a good fit. And... yeah. I need to look at it more. Though it is a Christian college, it looks like it's a relatively normal one. I've heard good things about it. Cons: It's six hours from D.C. I'm not sure about train stations/air ports. If my parents were living in the north-east, this wouldn't be an issue. But six hours is a little too long for friends to be shipping me to and from college. But this college is a still a good back-up if other things fall through. I'd like to find more PA colleges. I've always loved PA, and it's a great location to be near D.C. and also near other cities of interest. I'd love to find a great college in PA to go to.
Other colleges:
Bryn Mwar CollegePros: Let me just say: The Campus From Heaven. It's all castle-ish and romantic and beautiful and... *drooooooooooooool* They have fireplaces in their dorm rooms. If you want to fantasize about your dream campus, watch their Rollercoaster Tour. It will probably make you cry. Cons: It's a girl's-only school, and appears to be rather feminist. *cries* Longwood CollegeI don't know much about this one. It's in VA. The site is very confusing. Park UniversityPros: Nice looking campus. Really good History and English department. Also allows for Make Your Own Major, and the history professor is in charge of the Make Your Own Major, so it would be easy to work with him on that. Also offers a full scholarship for anyone with a 28 ACT and 3.75 GPA. Cons: Erm, it's in the midwest. So it's not near anyone. Emerson CollegeReally I just like this college because they have excellent advertising. They sent me this brochure that was just awesome. I mean, most college things you get in the mail you're just like, "Eh...okay." But this one was really well put together and a pleasure to look through. However, it's in MA, and I have like 0 interest in going to school there. Oh well. Mississippi State University Pros: REALLY nice dorms. Very big, with individual air-conditioning and bathrooms. Also a great gym and lots of free classes offered. Also a good scholarship program. And a bulldog is the mascot. (Only those of you who read North and South will get that.) Cons: It's in Mississippi. The campus is really big, so it'd be hard to get around without a bike or car. More may be added to the list at another time.
