Zen and the Art of Invention [Jul. 12th, 2009|11:10 am]

sphinxbait
Because I had a corp POS sitting in high-sec collecting dust, I decided to put our investment to good use... Since we're not really a production corp, I chose to dabble in invention.

Now, I've been reading guides all over and getting a feel for the mechanic. Currently I am doing ammo production (cruise missiles right this moment). The problem I am having is that the timeline is too long for my tastes. To get a missile bp from BPO to product is just about 2 weeks (12-13 days). This is alright, but I'd really like to be able to do production on the order of 7-10 days and then basically have a 3 day rotation that I can just have as a habit.

The other thing is I have no intention of 5-ing any of the research skills. This character is a jack-of-all-trades character and will remain that way. I am however developing an alt to do the more glorious inventing (ships and mods) who would have all those crazy 5's. In the short run I'd like to K.I.S.S. but would love to expand into full-fledged production.

So, here are the questions:
-Are there any be-all end-all guides/spreadsheets/tools for invention?
-Am I in the wrong market with t2 ammo? (Tried drones, not high enough return)
-Beyond R&D agents, should I be doing more to lower costs? (supply contracts, corp ops, etc)

Eve Bank Heist [Jul. 7th, 2009|09:01 am]

waya3k
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2009/07/virtual-theft-in-eve-online-creates-run-on-bank.ars

According to the BBC, it was revealed that a veteran player of EVE embezzled over 200 billion ISK from, Ebank, the bank he was the CEO of. The former CEO, known only as Ricdic, is actually a man in his 20s from Australia who works in the technology industry; it was revealed that he sold the ill-gotten in-game credits for roughly $5,000, which he used to put down a deposit on a house and pay some medical bills. When news of the theft got out in the EVE community, though, it caused players to make a run on the bank. Meanwhile, the New York Times is reporting that over 5 trillion ISK was withdrawn by account holders before the bank's board of directors shut down the institution to sort out the overall mess.

I don't play Eve any more but I still follow it from this community and also online gaming news in general. What's funny is that when I still played Eve I banked with Ebank and had 2 billion in ISK deposited with them. When I stopped playing I gave me ISK to a friend of mine and while I haven't talked to him about it, I am pretty sure he withdrew it all.

Chinese ratters? what Chinese ratters? [Jun. 30th, 2009|03:13 pm]

joe_richter
Most MMOs have gold farmers of one sort or another, people who find the most efficient way to make ingame currency and sell it for real life money, and a large portion of these are chinese workers. Eve more than most, with it's player run economy, is susceptible to this type of trading, so the following article is interesting, if only because you know the Chinese authorities will actually enforce this.

Wherever I end up in Eve, there's always Chinese ratters and miners, and they're always easy to spot. Much harder to pin down though :D Interesting times ahead.

Yeah, i know, griefing is the point of GS and an appeal to rationality is pretty pointless, but you really didn't have to spam our forums with porn.

Spying, recording TS, fine metagaming is part of eve and all, but you guys intentionally broke our alliance forums, posting over a thousand replies so far. Really? Is this what this is about?

There's a caod thread on it, I'm not going to bother to find and link it since I'm sure you have it on gf.com

Thunderdome - many goons enter, 1 goon leaves. [Jun. 21st, 2009|01:51 pm]

thaadd
We had a allies wide Frigate Thunderdome yesterday.

Comedy notes - after goons spend sometimes 100s of millions getting faction frigates fit, design carefully interlocking squads to spiderrep, and work together, fucker from PL (blue.... for now....) drives through the group with a smart bombing Apoc.

No one DD'd but that was a near thing.

Everyone was shunted to a side system via titan bridges as the idiots, excuse me, full directors who set this up failed to note they chose the undock of our logistics station to fight. Retards-in-space. We nearly lost a tower and hauler worth a billion but for a lone osprey repping him as he docked. Tower work NEVER STOPS.

In the side system, we were cynoed in by 2 titans - told not to move, to drop fleet when we got there, and oh, yah, if you leave the bubbles you warp in, HACs and carriers will kill you. also, if you kill the Fraps Shuttles, or the center carrior....

And then. All hell broke loose. To be honest I don't even know who won. I did last longer than I expected with an 'A' name. It's fun. we're going to try to organize a team thing, maybe 5-10 on 5-10.

At the risk of bringing CAOD here... [Jun. 12th, 2009|01:45 pm]

This is an AMAZING piece of work/propaganda/data work.

Vio, one of the Goon spymasters gave a 2 hour speech to Eve University this week, and one of the things he was talking about was a) the use of propaganda and b) how certain populations on Eve exist where they are not out of any 'esprit de corps' but a goal to be on the winning side.

Things start going south, they start hunting for other places to be. Mind you, for you empire people who may not be too familiar with this, losing your space in 0.0 can SUCK. In a conquorable station, every thing in your hanger - locked away when you lose the station, and you are not docked. If you're docked, you can 'fire sale' it or try to evac in a single trip, often thwarted by dudes chilling on the undock. Anything that can hold any mass of goods is going to be slow as shit. If you have remote sale ability, you can sit cloaked and try to slowly sell your shit, but it's still a pain to get there. So getting out while the getting's good is a plan.

I think I still have a few hundred million units of various rocks in Tenerifs (welp).

But enough of that. A OEG (chill Russian Brosefs) chart graphing the membership of the opposite side of things, major battles, counts of various crazy-profit moons, and sov gains. It's a BIG image, don't try it on a shitty link.

Pretty pictures

RMT in MMORPGs [Jun. 9th, 2009|02:24 pm]

Time Can Be Money: A Case Study of Real Money Transactions in EVE Online

In summation, guy without good understanding of real world markets and real world trade systems tries to do an assessment of how Eve handles real money transactions without knowing how or why basic game play contexts work and exist, and having utterly failed makes some weird argument about how RMT standards and laws will stop child labor.

I think. He's not so good at this writing thing. But he's been slashdot'd (most Eve stories get to Slashdot) and it's going badly for him in the comments. Being a poor writer is one thing, but missing basic Eve elements is not so good. He's already started getting defensive too.

So pour on more gas. :)

Freaking carebears [Jun. 6th, 2009|08:36 pm]

zombiecook
My corp is mostly full of carebears. While I'm generally ok as I've lapsed into mostly carebearish ways (though I'm still constantly in low sec and 0.0 at least,) every now and then it gets to me. Corp policy is NBSI but as we don't have any real low sec or 0.0 holdings it's more of a policy to allow the freedom to engage targets when they present themselves rather than a rabid "kill any neut that enters our territory."

So after going back and forth with a few of our newer members I pulled this gem from corp mail, after venting to some of my old pirate buddys I just had to post it and share my pain.

"I am looking forward to our Roam on XXXXX and hope to be there and learn something. But will I be expected to engage random nuetrals with the rest of the fleet or can I conciously object?"

The answer they got back from me (moderately an officer of the corp): "If I'm the FC and I call primary on a neut and you don't fire you'll be the next primary."

I doubt they'll be happy but right now... I don't care.

And no Blip... not yet. Just venting some more.

Dear CCP... [Jun. 2nd, 2009|10:34 am]

This is why you have test environments.

Just a notion, ya know.

I was talking to a friend who plays World of Warcraft and one thing they almost NEVER have, is this sort of tech bullshit. There is a different way to develop, than constant hotfixes.

Sims 3 shows up today. I wonder how close to a spaceship I can design a house? If I make my directors and put them in a small house, will they end up in bed with eachother? Could I make 'alliance households'? Would -A- be able to hold space without a rich Sim sending them checks?

Quick question [May. 30th, 2009|12:12 am]

Has anyone ever seen a bloodraider or Sansha rat fire off a missle other than defender?

I'd like to expand my ninja 0.0 ratting to other factions than serpentis but missiles make my tactics less than ideal.

CSM results out... [May. 28th, 2009|04:33 pm]

http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&bid=664

Pretty pleased with the results. Two goons (including my immediate boss, Zastrow, and Avalloc a friend of mine) Mazz from Pandemic Legion, and some Morsis guy I don't know.

To say it is a fair representation of Eve, is perhaps not true, but more that the megacorps are pretty good at organizing ourselves with forums. We had primaries for our 2 candidates, which got pretty excited. The guy who makes our maps started tagging stuff in the maps, our wiki got 'edited' and there was a fair number of POS renamed 'Vote for Zastrow'.

I know they are sincerely interested in making the game better, whatever tinfoil theories about Goons may exist....

I feel bad for Omberzombie. Dude may have a LONG LONG flight ahead of him.

One of the biggest stoners in Goonfleet (and a very cool guy) just got a titan. This is the guy who used to camp L4x with his mothership and a loose group of goons on the weekends.

Expect fun times ahead.

The first thing he did was Doomsday our new CEO, and a director or two. Then he played baseball (it's a Lev) with my Rorq (2nd time this week. Turns out Levs giev bump better than Amarr titans) and threw me up against a pos from outside of shields. I used all my restraint and did not eject him from the POS. Smack talk in local pretending to be mad to confuse the allies.

(from a party a few months back, when he he still had a Wyvern) (yes, the camera woman was drunk, and it is wobble cam)

WE'RE SIMPLY DANCING TO THEIR TUNE [May. 19th, 2009|07:57 am]

sabator
Was in a RAZOR gang last night, we jump into a system to save a bunch of poses and we seem to have fucked ourselves over as we have 100 razor+goons, 200 bob+AAA jump in and lock down the entire system so we can't bring any reinforcements in (it's also cyno jammed). The FC makes no secret of the fact we're all about to die horribly and simply orders us to take as many of them with us as possible. The POS ticks down to exiting reinforced, the timer hits zero, and...bob jump out. Left system. Gone. Didn't do anything except shoot a small tower, what the christ? FC makes the dubious decision to actually FOLLOW them, we follow them all the way back to i1y but they've all docked up and even killboard.goonfleet.com/km/361162 doesn't tempt them to come out and play. I have no idea what's going on, did we get trolled?

Zhek is special. Short bus special? Maybe. But he's now up to Drakes. 12 Drakes. Pew - pew - pew - pew - pew - pew - pew - pew - pew - pew - pew - pew.
(boom)
Also seen him undock a fleet of Ospreys for repping. He's a one man goddamned local spike. Petitions don't work, because he's not botting - he just has assists to make mouse movements/keyboard entries identically. Turns out, CCP is ok with people having 12x accounts live.
