Update

Thought you all would be interested to know that the neighbors' POS 1990 mocha Honda was recovered last night in a neighborhood close to the Coburg/Beltline interchange.

Though this destination isn't too terribly far away from the crime scene, about 20 miles had been put on the odometer. Hmmm, where *did* that little car take our nefarious thugs, I wonder?
There was no real damage, save for a completely spent battery.
Not only were the contents intact (except a broken stereo faceplate went missing), but the thieves were also generous enough to leave behind a speaker and their meth pipe!
I've been asked to include that the responding police unit was "nice."

Our victims have purchased a club-like device and are parking closer to their windows to avoid further theft.

Thanks for sharing your tales of woe and empathy, it made the experience somewhat less alienating. But wouldn't it be super if this stealin' wasn't such a popular past-time in our fair city to begin with?

Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale is Refreshed with Artistry

William Shakespeare's romantic drama The Winter's Tale will be presented on the Lane Community College main stage for two more weekends in October.

The Winter's Tale is an adult, romantic fairy tale, spiced with sexual jealousy, blind revenge, children missing or dead, mistaken identities, love, and a hungry bear. It takes place in two fantasy realms - an austere ,royal court of Sicilia; and a wild, pastoral land called Bohemia.

The story begins darkly, as King Leontes is overcome by jealousy, accusing his wife, Queen Hermione, of consorting with his best friend, King Polixenes. Despite the oracle proclaiming Hermione's innocence, Leontes pronounces a death sentence on Hermione, and banishes her newborn baby, to be exposed - left to the elements. Lord Antigonus is ordered to remove the infant, and he reluctantly abandons it in a storm. King Leontes repents his irrational cruelty, too late. The action jumps to an agrarian land, where the shepherds celebrate a summer sheep-shearing festival. In a story full of colorful characters, the two kingdoms eventually reconcile in a scene of magical wonderment.

Showtime for The Winter's Tale is 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturdays, October 10-18. For all Friday and Saturday shows and Sunday matinee (October 12, 2:00 p.m.), tickets are $12.50 general, $10 students, seniors and staff. For the Thursday shows (October 9 and 16), all tickets are $8.00.

In collaboration with Food for Lane County, a donation of four cans of food admits two-for-one at performances on October 10 -12.

Audience members must be over age 10.

Tickets are available at the door, cash or check accepted.

Reservations may be made by calling the Student Productions Office box office: 463-5761.

Sadaf Tea

I am searching for Sadaf Tea which is a common brand of tea in Iran, like Stash or Lipton. Are there any Middle Eastern or Mediterranean, markets in Eugene? I know that Pomegranates is closing or is already closed and I've checked Sunrise for it as well (you know, just in case). They also do not carry it at World Market.

Any ideas of where else I could look?

WTF Crime?

Our dear friends, recent transplants from Bloomington, have had their vehicle stolen out from under their sleeping noses (10/8 AM).
What nads these thieves have to jack a POS 1990 muffler-less mocha Honda from West Eugene (of all places...)
Be on the lookout for a bent up bumper with a Darwin fish, Pavement and Obama (!) stickers.
Not to mention- INDIANA license plates.
Thank you in advance for your civic helpfulness during their time of need.

And on a personal note- can I again just say, WTF? We had the window smashed in on our own vehicle last month and reusable grocery bags lifted (of all things...) After having lived in Seattle proper for the better part of 16 years with nary an incursion, I gotta say, this is some warped kind of 'Welcome Wagon', Eugene. Save your breath, we're not leaving.

"alternative" doctor?

So I just got health insurance (BlueCross/Regence Innova) after ten years of not having it, and I'd like to just go to a doctor, get a basic check-up, maybe get some bloodwork done to make sure everything's okay. I know I could pick a doctor out of the blue for something this simple, but I'd like to establish a relationship with someone good in case I need them in the future. My plan doesn't cover naturopaths, but I'm just hoping for someone who is accepting of "alternative" medicine, open to different approaches, etc. I suppose I prefer a female doctor, but most important is that they be open-minded, easy to talk to, etc. And within walk/bus of downtown, since I don't have a car. Any suggestions?

Anyone know of any Samhain Celebrations in Eugene??? It's gonna be on a Friday night this year, which means it should be extra fun. I doubt I'll be making my usual pilgrimage to the Samhain celebration I usually frequent that's an hour away. Plus, I'd like to get to know some of my local freaks--hard to find in Eugene, I know ;-)

Suggestions???

x-posted

So there I was, at the Bijou, settling in to enjoy my organic popcorn and the premiere of Choke. My friends and I were chatting, both quietly and soberly, before the film started about how much we love Eugene (seriously), when the couple in front of us got up and walked out of the theater, pausing only to turn around and give us the finger from the doorway. They were apparently so put off that they opted out of seeing the movie, since they didn't come back.

 So...what's that all about?

(Movie was awesome, btw)

I'm looking for a general practice doctor - I would prefer a female but welcome all suggestions.

I have Regence BlueCross BlueShield as my insurance. They have a search option on their website, but I would like to have real people's input since I did not like the last doctor I went to!

Worth Pointing Out

Don’t judge downtown till you’ve seen it

By David Mandelblatt

Published: September 21, 2008

My wife and I live in downtown Eugene. We have lived in Eugene since 1969, and moved downtown in 2004. We miss our old neighborhoods, but don’t regret the move at all. I think my downtown is a great place to be. Last Tuesday, we took a walk to do errands and get exercise. These are things we saw between 2:30 p.m. and 4:15 p.m:

There were people in the coffee shop at the library. They read, worked on their computers, wrote, visited with each other.

Two people staffed a voter registration booth outside the library. (Thanks for doing that!)

A constant flow of visitors entered and exited the library, quietly.

Young people visited with each other outside the library. They were being kids, which seems reasonable, since they are kids!

Yes, they were noisy; some did look different that I did when I was a kid. So what? Kids need a place to be, and a library seems like a great place. They weren’t staying home and playing video games. I’m glad for that!

A similar but larger group of teens congregated at the bus station. Rowdy behavior? Not when you compare it to the behavior that you’ll see in Section 15 at Autzen Stadium during the Ducks’ next home game.

Isn’t it a good thing that people will use the bus? Shouldn’t we commend them for not adding to our traffic and associated problems? Seems like some critics are unclear on the concept here.

A young woman with flamboyant hair asked for 50 cents. I said no, but wished her good luck. She smiled and wished us a great day. I believe that she was being sincere.

A shop owner, in conversation in the doorway of her shop, smiled and said hello. We returned the greeting. (We appreciated that, Betty Snowden!)

We stopped in at the Salon de Refusés on the “notorious” West Broadway strip. The people inside included a couple with a person using a wheelchair. The chair did not seem to keep them from enjoying the exhibit.

When we got to the watchmaker, he was involved in a conversation with a railroad watch enthusiast. The watchmaker was absolutely polite toward the man, who was clearly not a customer. There’s a lot to be said for courtesy; when we returned later we were treated with the same courtesy. (We appreciated that, Anderson’s!)

We walked past Kesey plaza. A young man had emptied his backpack for the police. The police are downtown, on the job. This is as it should be. Although I have heard of a serious sanitation and litter problem at Kesey plaza, I saw no sign of it.

We stopped at The Broadway for a glass of wine. It was comfortable and friendly, as always. We visited with the owners, Ellen and Angus. As I paid the bill I had a brief, friendly conversation with another customer. It felt like the old neighborhood tavern.

At no time did we see any of the drug use, criminal activity, or threatening behavior that many writers to The Register-Guard seem to fear. There was no terrible sense of an “ilk” or an “element” downtown to try to make anyone’s life miserable.

(Could the City Council solve the problem by putting up an “Ilk Crossing” sign in front of the library? Just a thought.)

Yes, there are problems downtown. There are drugs; there are predators; there are people who need help of one kind or another and aren’t receiving it. Unlike the University of Oregon? Unlike the high schools and middle schools in our communities?

My downtown is a great place to be. People are friendly. I can do business, read a book, visit with friends, leave my car at home. I buy groceries, borrow materials from the library, enjoy a good meal or a glass of wine with my wife. Downtown is a great place to have a meeting, listen to music, even have a celebration!

I invite everyone to come down to my downtown for an hour or two. Take a walk around and watch the people here. Listen to their sounds. Enjoy their smiles.

Then you can pass judgment if you must.

David Mandelblatt is a retired teacher.
